The poet, T.S. Eliot.
This essay assignment, you will write an analysis essay comparing T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” (Literature 607-611) to two of the following poems under the theme of love.
William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 18” (Literature 837)
Williams Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 130” (Literature 838-839) Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s “Be Near Me” (Literature 868)
You are only allowed to use the poems mentioned in the prompt. Use only two poems as support.
Your introduction must include a one-sentence summary of each poem you are using; each summary must include the full title of the poem and the full name of the author and must focus on each poem’s key points. The introduction must end with your thesis, comparing the complexity of love as depicted in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” to two of the poems mentioned above.
Body paragraphs: The first body paragraph must focus on “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, the second body paragraph must focus on one of the poems above, and the third body paragraph must focus on another poem from above. For support, ask yourself: How does the persona of each poem view love? How do the lovers treat each other in these poems? Do not just answer the questions in the prompt but use the questions as a guide for your argument.
Use only the poems as support in your body paragraphs. Do not do any other source or any research for this assignment. You must also explain the relationship between the support and your body paragraphs’ topic sentences. Also, do not summarize the whole poems again in the body paragraphs. What I am looking for is your close reading on particular lines or sections of the poems to prove your argument. Also, only use direct quotations from the poems as support.
For support from a poem, use a forward slash “/” after each line and use the correct in-text citation. Example: Shakespeare states, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?/Thou art more lovely and more temperate” (Shakespeare 837).

Exploring Mesoamerican Artifacts at the Natural History Museum of NYC: A Study of Obsidian Tools and Clay Figurines
using the natural history museum of nyc fill out these questions.
I. Obsidian (volcanic glass) was the most important material for utilitarian tools in Mesoamerica. It was chipped into spear points, knives, scrapers, and blades. Sometimes it was also used for polished ornaments such as ear spools, lip plugs, and beads. It is easier to work than jade (because it is much softer), but also very fragile. Most obsidian is gray or black, and can be found at sources throughout Mesoamerica. But there is one important variety of translucent obsidian that looks black from a distance, but if you look through a thin edge, it is actually a greenish color (looks like beer-bottle glass) This is found at only one source, located in Central Mexico (50 km north of Mexico City) Another very rare variety (opaque red) also comes from the Mexico City area. (You will be shown samples of these in class.)
Obsidian tools and ornaments are on display in three cases (marked on the map):
i) Preclassic specimens from Mexico City, (ii) Postclassic (Aztec) specimens from Central Mexico (mostly near Mexico City), and (iti) Postclassic (Mixtec) specimens from Oaxaca (about 400 km south of Mexico City). Please examine these specimens — focus on the obsidian; ignore the jade, pottery, and metal artifacts that are in the same cases. Then answer the following questions:
Even though the lighting is bad, try to distinguish the colors of all of the obsidian artifacts (You will need to bring a small flashlight!) Describe the form and color (gray, green, or red) of each of the obsidian artifacts (Hint: there is only one red obsidian artifact on exhibit). Are the same forms and types of objects found in each time period and in each region, or do they vary? Which regions had specimens made from green obsidian, or red obsidian? What does this tell you about trade?
Were the obsidian ear spools and other obsidian ornaments worn only by elites (high-status persons), or could anyone wear them? On what do you base your opinion? (Hint: consider the relative cost of the raw materials and the amount of labor involved in producing them.)
II. Small clay figurines are common in archaeological sites throughout Mesoamerica, from the early Preclassic period up until the Spanish conquest. They are believed to have been used in household rituals. Many of the ones on exhibit here are broken — the detached heads originally would have had bodies, before they broke off. Examples from Central Mexico are displayed in four cases (marked on the map): i) early, middle, and late Preclassic; ii) Classic (Teotihuacan); (iii) early Postclassic (Toltec); and (iv) late Postclassic (Aztec). Please examine these — focus on the clay figurines; ignore the pots, stone statues, and other objects in the same cases. Then answer the following questions:
How does the technique of manufacturing the figurines change over time? Does this change suggest anything about the degree of specialization and the organization of production?
How does the style and symbolism of the figurines change over time? Describe the figurines from each time period.
In each period, are they mostly male or female (or genderless);
human, animal, or imaginary beings? What sort of regalia and costumes (if any) do they have? Do you think they represent humans or supernatural beings? Do you think that religious beliefs changed over time?
( this is the assignment attached below i also have pictures of the artifacts if needed) -

“Deconstructing Representations of Gender and Culture in Media: A Critical Analysis and Media Remix” Title: “Exploring the Purpose and Impact of Media: A Critical Analysis”
Description: Now that you’ve learned about different ways gender and cultural ideals are often represented in media, we’re going to put all of these representations together to analyze one final piece of media. For your final, please write a 750 word (roughly 3 pages, double-spaced) analysis on a piece of media of your choosing (video game, tv show, movie, book, album, music video, etc.)
Pick a piece of media, one that you either are familiar with now or loved as a child, and follow the prompt below:
Similar to our media analyses, you will answer at least 3 of the 5W questions(questions below) to analyze your chosen media (1 page or more). For this analysis, please list the specific questions you are answering.
Write a personal reflection discussing your relationship with your chosen media. Please answer how it has influenced your relationship with gender and/or the way you view the world. Was it positive or negative for you? (Half a page or more)
Utilizing what we’ve learned about how gender, other social identities, and cultural ideas are represented, interpreted, and integrated into our society, identify at least two different aspects of your chosen media that misrepresent, under-represent, or stereotype marginalized identities or topics (consider: gender, race, ability, mental health, physical health, sexuality, politically charged topics, “taboo” topics, etc.) and explain why these depictions could be harmful/ not accurate. (Half a page or more)
Consider:
Are any characters one-dimensional? Any characters “tokenized”?
Are certain groups of people missing that could be beneficial to the story?
Are there any stereotypes or biases present in the original media and how do these stereotypes or biases impact the portrayal of marginalized groups?
Are certain topics or scenarios inadequately discussed, fueled by stereotypes, or include misinformation? You will then conduct a “media remix”. You will propose how these representations/commentary/dialogue (or lack thereof) could be changed or “remixed” into more holistic or nuanced form representation/commentary/dialogue. Explain why these changes are beneficial. (1 page or more)
Consider:
What changes can be made to the storyline, characters, or setting?
How can the language or imagery be altered?
How can topics and scenarios depicted/discussed be “handled” better? Other requirements: Must include a cover page, page numbers, in-text citations, and a bibliography.
Must be double-spaced, 750 words minimum.
Must include three references to course materials. Materials must aid in building your analysis and be relevant to your argument/topic. Must use consistent APA format. Your analysis is worth 20 points and is due May 1st at 11:59pm. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Only one submission will be accepted. If you submit your analysis before the due date has passed, you are consenting to having the analysis (possibly) graded before the assignment has closed. If you have concerns about APA, here are some videos you may find helpful: 5W and 1H Questions:
Who
Who is this media representing? Who is this media critiquing? Who is the media giving voice to or speaking for (if anyone)? Who made the media, and who are they? Who was the media made for?
What
What is the media portraying (either on the surface or as a deeper meaning; are these the same)? What is the media trying to say (about society, individuals, etc.)? What symbols are used in the media and what do they mean? What devices (music, images, etc.) are used to convey meaning in the media, and why?
Where
Where does this media take place? Is where the media takes place important? What location imagery does the media portray, and does this contribute to the message of the media? Where else have you seen images from this media in other media (memes or street art for example)? When
When was this media made, and is that important? How does do the events occurring in the “real world” affect the messages in the media? When is this media relevant? Only when it was made, or still today?
Why
Why was this media made? Why might this media be important? Why does the media critique what it does?
How
How has this media influenced other media or art? How does this media reflect or represent society? How has this media created new meaning or media? How does this film media make you or others feel or think, and why? Was it intentional or unintentional? -

Title: Assurance and Security: A Comparison of Luther’s Theology and Locke’s Political Philosophy on Human Freedom
In a 4- to 5-page paper that is unified, coherent, and well-developed, please do the following:
With a focus on their respective understandings of human freedom, compare and contrast the
role played by assurance (and related notions) in Luther’s theology with the role played by
security (and related notions) in John Locke’s political philosophy.
Your paper should advance a clear, concise thesis; it should develop a well-structured argument
in support of that thesis; and it should ground that development in textual quotation and
analysis focused solely on Luther’s “Preface to the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans” and John
Locke’s Second Treatise of Government. -

Please paraphrase the paper in the attached doc, and make it to a full 3 page paper. The instruction for this paper is:
write a 3 pages paper for the play you watched at school, called “Little Shop of Horror”
Specific steps for writing a performance review:
1. Summarize the play (briefly) and your initial response to it. What is its context, starting point, and aims?
2. Find two specific elements that struck you and analyze how those two elements were represented. How did the message come across: specific lines, actions, technical means (lighting, sound effects, music, props, etc.? Were there any significant actions or gestures that contributed to the play’s meaning?
3. Utilize the concepts and terminologies that we learned throughout this semester. You can also make a comparison in terms of plot, characters, language, genres, and styles between the performance and any plays) that we have read for class.
4. Describe audience composition in terms of race, gender, ethnicity, age, full house or not. What was the audience’s response to the performance? Did you sense approval, disapproval, or some other response?
On what basis and at what specific points) in the performance did you sense this?
5. Conclude with a reflection on if and how this performance changed the way you view theater. -

“Exploring the Depth of a Text: A Research Paper on a Specific Aspect of an Assigned Text”
One Research Paper will be required, again on some aspect of one of the assigned texts. This paper should be six to eight or more pages in length. The paper should not be construed as a report paper. Rather, your starting point should be the same as for your critical paper. You should start with an initial, tentative thesis regarding some specific aspect of the assigned text. You should check your thesis against the details of the text, just as in a critical paper, but you then check your impressions as well against secondary sources, articles and essays concerning the text you are studying. Based on your primary and secondary investigations, come to your final, considered thesis. Support and develop that thesis making use of the evidence you have compiled. Don’t force secondary material into your paper; use primary and secondary material to make your thesis claim better understood and more convincing. As a guideline, you should probably end up with three to five good secondary sources.

“The Impact of Systemic Racism on the Criminal Justice System and Its Disproportionate Effects on Latinx Communities” Introduction: The criminal justice system in the United States has long been criticized for its disproportionate impact on communities of color, particularly the Title: Race and Representation in the Media: A Critical Analysis Introduction: – Briefly introduce the topic of race and representation in the media – Provide a thesis statement outlining the main argument of the paper Body: – Identify and explain at
This paper will illustrate what you have learned in this course. I expect you to use the course readings to make your arguments, but I encourage you to use external sources other than those provided in the course material. You are required to use a minimum of FOUR academic sources for this paper. Up to two of these four sources may be from our class readings and the remaining must be pulled from the list below of appropriate sources. If you are unclear if a source constitutes an academic one please email me the title and author (also if there is a link or website through with I can access it that would be helpful to include as well) and I will let you know. I have provided a list of sources that will count for your paper.
Appropriate sources:
Academic Journal Articles (access through our library)
Academic Press Books (access through our library)
Government Databases and Publications (publicly available)
Inappropriate Sources:
News articles (all of them)
Websites
Think Tanks
Non-academic data collection websites (Gallup, PEW etc…)
Blogs
Wikipedia
Anything not listed above under appropriate sources
How to write/organize your paper
You must provide a thesis statement. It is best if this occurs in the first paragraph of the paper. This will be your guide for the remainder of the paper, and it will orient me to the goal(s) of your paper. The thesis statement illustrates a relationship between different factors. This means you should clearly state that X, Y, and Z are related to A, B, and C. For example: Because of Structural/Systemic racism in our judicial system, Latinos are disproportionately imprisoned and have higher recidivism rates when compared to Whites of equal class status. In the remaining portion of this paragraph you should lay a ground work for how you plan to illustrate this relationship.
The paragraphs that follow should illustrate this groundwork. In each, you should explain readings and key themes illustrated by these authors. I recommend a discussion containing at least 1-2 citations per page. Also, you should organize your entire paper into several sub-sections (3-5 depending on your topic, argument, and citations) that all aim to underscore your main thesis statement. Each section should contain a sentence, preferably at the beginning, that makes this clear. These sections and paragraphs will be the meat of your paper and will be where the majority of your grade is determined.
End your paper with a concluding paragraph. This paragraph should summarize your paper, illustrate some of its weaknesses, and suggest ways in which these weaknesses can be improved. You may also suggest how your project can be broadened to address other questions related to your topic.
You will provide a reference page with complete references for each citation you use. You must use a citation style that is consistent with your major. As I stated on the syllabus, if you are unsure, always provide a citation otherwise it is plagiarism. Paraphrasing; borrowing ideas, words, and phrases; using maps, charts or pictures; copying and pasting from a website, blog, or other internet space all must be cited. Failing to do so is a serious matter and constitutes academic dishonesty. I will check every paper for plagiarized material.
Your paper will be a minimum of four full pages in length but may spill onto a fifth page as needed. You must adhere to the paper guidelines and for the formatting of this final paper you must adhere to the style of your discipline. I encourage you to start writing this paper as soon as possible. I also encourage you to come and talk with me about your paper before it is due (preferably more than a day or two before you need to turn it in).
Paper Topics
Topically, you may choose almost anything as long as it relates to Afrx-Latinx experiences. You’re welcome to select from some of the topics discussed in the class or you can investigate a topic you may have encountered in your everyday life. I recommend that you try to choose a topic that you can easily relate to a few of our readings; this will make getting started much easier and immediately provide you with a few articles to meet your goal of four. If you are having trouble deciding what topics to choose here is a list of possible topics to get you started (You do not have to choose from this list, its only suggestions to help):
Movies – You can choose any movie and/or genre, but I expect you to think critically about this/these film(s). If you choose this topic email me the film you want to analyze before you write your proposal.
Television – Just like movies, you can choose any show(s), but remember that you must think critically. Link the statements made in the readings directly to the shows. If you choose this topic email me the show you want to analyze before you write your proposal.
Sports – Race/Ethnicity in sports, college sports, professional sports, news coverage of sports, history of sports.
Criminal Justice System – Disproportionate representation of People of color in prison, People of Color and involved in white-collar crime v. People of Color involved in poor or working class crime, policing in White neighborhoods vs. neighborhoods of color, stop and frisk policies.
Biology & other sciences – Biological interpretations of race, class, sexuality, and/or gender; disproportionate representation of whites in the sciences.
News media – News coverage of People of color or whites, recent presence of People of color in politics, coverage of immigration before and after 9/11/01. (If you want to focus on a specific news show or network, please email me the specifics before you write your proposal.) News coverage of the relationship between immigration and gender, news coverage of Latinx gay marriage issues v. hate crimes committed against the LGBTQQI community.
Education – College admissions, high school history textbooks, quality of schools, race and class segregation in universities, racism/sexism/homophobia on campuses.
Housing – Segregation based on class and race in cities or disproportionate representations of people of color in economically depressed neighborhoods.
Healthcare – Health disparity between Whites vs. People of Color, access to healthcare (reproductive, cancer based healthcare, diabetes, heart disease).
Internet – Differences in access to Internet among different races, presence of hate group blogs, chatrooms & other spaces where comments are available, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.)
What you should cover in your paper
I expect you to cover at least one major academic argument on the topic you have chosen. To accomplish this you should use books or articles found in the TAMUSA library or JSTOR search engine available through our library system. If you are not able to find these databases, please email me or contact someone at the library directly. Our course reading may cover these arguments, in which case I recommend trying to supplement this argument with articles available in these databases.
Providing the contours of this argument will constitute the majority of your paper. This means that you will use each subsection of your paper to illustrate a new theme or contour of this particular topic. I recommend trying to find other resources to supplement this portion of your paper.
In approaching this paper you should critically engage common sense understandings of the topic. You are required to do analysis supported by the sociological knowledge you gain from this course. In this analysis you will synthesize ideas, concepts, theories, and examples given in class and in your readings to address your topic.
