“The Need for Change: An Argument for Policy Reform” Title: The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health: A Critical Analysis
Assignment Prompt
For this assignment, you will be writing an argumentative essay–a piece of writing that requires you to take a position, what rhetoricians call a claim, on a debatable topic (that is, a topic with more than one side). Specifically, you will present a policy claim where you argue for or against a change of some kind. This claim should be supported by reliable, credible evidence (i.e. scholarly sources) backed by research. In addition to presenting your claim, you will also need to acknowledge the other side, which is called the counterargument. For this assignment, you may choose your own topic. Hint: browse topics that interest you in “Opposing Viewpoints” our article database accessed through the banner.
Assignment-Specific Requirements:
Length: This assignment should be at least 750 words.
Thesis: Underline your thesis statement or the main claim of your letter.
Supporting Points: Plan to develop at least three strong supporting points to accompany your thesis and at least one counter. Each supporting point should equate to at least one body paragraph.
Sources Needed: The essay should integrate at least 4 reliable and credible sources, to help prove the argument for or against a policy change. Be sure to use MLA guidelines for all in-text and Works Cited citations.
While we encourage you to acquire sources from Gale’s Opposing Viewpoints, you may access credible, scholarly sources from other resources. Tertiary sources, such as online encyclopedias, dictionaries and Wikipedia, are not scholarly sources, and should not be cited within your work; however, they may offer helpful foundational information as you develop your understanding of an issue. (For more information, please review Berkley University’s resource on scholarly and popular sources: “Evaluating Resources.”)
Page Formatting: See Appendix C – Formatting and Submitting Your Work. Please underline your thesis statement.
MLA Requirements: See Formatting your Essay: MLA 8th Edition
Rhetorical Mode
When we talk about argument writing, we are not talking about an emotional and heated argument, but one that is neutral in tone and uses evidence/facts to convince your readers of a claim. Your argument is your claim, or the point that you want to convince readers of–in this instance, you will be making a claim for or against a policy change. Because everything depends on the strength of this claim (and the supporting points that you use to scaffold it), the organizational structure of an argumentative essay is incredibly important to its success. Every idea, topic sentence, paragraph, and page should always align with your argumentative claim. Be sure that you use scholarly evidence purposefully to support the claim you are making and do not veer too much into exploratory or informative writing, which is trickier than it sounds. You’ll also need to think carefully about how to integrate researched evidence with your own ideas, to build a fully developed and supported stance throughout. Finally, you will want to acknowledge the counterargument in the body paragraphs, even if you cannot refute it entirely.
Rhetorical Considerations
Purpose:
Remember that this is an argumentative essay: that means your goal is to prove your claim for or against a policy change to readers. This piece of writing should be aimed at convincing readers through the inclusion of a strong argumentative thesis, specific supporting points, acknowledgement of the counter, and carefully chosen scholarly evidence.
Audience:
The argumentative essay is written for someone else–a community of readers that is most impacted by the policy you are proposing to change (or keep the same). In this instance, you are writing to argue for or against a change (and thus convince readers that a change should or should not occur). Keep this audience in mind by angling everything in your essay towards a strong argument that can appeal to a more general population.
Form:
This is a formal writing project, written in third-person, relying on strong organizational strategies, integrating researched evidence (the academic sources you choose), and following MLA formatting guidelines.
Topics to avoid, as they are either too complex to argue in a single essay, or not considered appropriate for an academic or scholarly essay, are as follows:
The death penalty
Euthanasia or self-assisted death
Abortion
The (il)legalization of drugs (e.g. marijuana)
Religion or religious readings (e.g. existence of a higher order/being, or life after death)
Gun rights/rules
Global warming -

Can be any topic from the ones below or similar.
International consequences on the Gaza crisis
The Arctic Ocean as a new conflict scenario
Responsibility to Protect and the crisis of Sudan
Non-Western critiques on Humanitarian Intervention
The limits of liberal peace and peacebuilding
The existence of world values beyond Western order and interests

First, students will have to find a topic of their research interest, related to the readings proposed in this unit. Once you have selected the topic, you will have to define a research question to guide your research and help you construct an argument. Second, students will have to identify some working hypotheses. Hypotheses can be formulated based on preliminary research. The evidence presented in the working paper will lead to validating or discarding the hypotheses formulated initially.
Third, students will proceed with writing the working paper following this basic structure:
Introduction
Development
Conclusions
List of references
A working paper always must include the following information:
Presentation of the topic (object of analysis) and the research question (problem you want to solve or answer)
Importance of the question (justification of research)
Hypotheses
Brief review of existing literature (explanations that existing literature gives to the proposed topic and which debates exist about this question).
Definition of the key concepts and theories used in the research.
Attention:
Do not forget to provide correct citations for all sources of information used for the elaboration of your exercise. As you know, in compliance with international standards of academic ethics, we must provide a citation every time we borrow an idea or some information from another author or source. Failing to do so is considered plagiarism!
It is very important to respect the given word limits. Please adjust your work to the indicated extension!
This CAT must be submitted through the electronic submission and registration system accessible through the virtual classroom. Please submit your exercise with a maximum extension of 3000 words, in Word, Open Office but not in PDF format.
Important Disclaimer
There are two types of citations that you must necessarily include in your Activity: in-text citations and the final bibliography.
A. In-text citations.
These are the citations you include in the body of your text, indicating only the author’s last name, the year of publication, and, if necessary, the page numbers where you found the information. You should write the complete citation of the work in point 2, the ‘Final List.’
(Information about in-text citations)Links to an external site.
There are three types of citations:
Direct quotations: A direct quotation is necessary when using the exact text of an author in your activity, indicated by the use of quotation marks (” “). Direct quotations are important because they lend credibility and support the claims of a work, allowing the reader to verify the information in the original sources.
Example: As Pont (2020, p. 29) states, “A ‘trade’ war that also affects the global economy and the political relations between countries worldwide.”
Indirect citations or paraphrases: Indirect citations, also known as paraphrases, are a technique used in academic work to incorporate information from other sources indirectly, using our own words to explain the original content. In a paraphrase, the original idea of the author is reexpressed to fit our academic work, without using the author’s exact words.
Similar to direct quotations, it is important to include the reference in the text to indicate the source of the information.
Example: As analyzed by Soler (2021, p. 3), the rivalry between the United States and China has become a structural characteristic of the emerging international system.
Citations about general information from a work or summaries of works: In this case, no specific text is being directly quoted, and no information from specific pages is being paraphrased. Instead, a general idea obtained from a reading or work is being indicated. Unlike the previous types, pages are not specified because the aim is to highlight a general idea or summary.
Example: As Mearsheimer’s work (2001) demonstrates, the balance of power between status quo powers and rising powers is the main source of instability in the international system.
B. Reference List
A final list with all complete citations.
In this course, it is necessary for the work to include a final list of all sources used, whether cited directly or indirectly, or consulted during the research process. This list, also known as a bibliography, in this course, must follow the APA citation style, ensuring coherence and accuracy in presenting information.
In general, works are presented in alphabetical order by the author’s last name or by the title of the work, and details such as the author’s name, the title of the work, the publication date, and the name of the publisher, among other details, are included. -

“Uncovering the Truth Behind Alternative Archaeology: An Exploration of Pseudoarchaeology and Its Popularity in the Public Eye”
Assignment
Anthropology in the Public Eye
Topic: Alternative Archaeology
Instructions: You are required to write a paper (@6 pages, double spaced, 12-font) on alternative archaeology (also called pseudoarchaeology, ‘fringe’ archaeology, ‘bullshit’ archaeology). The paper must be in proper essay format and all source material must be referenced (in-text citations as well as a references cited page). We will be using the SAA Style Guide (information posted on D2L). Sub-headings are encouraged. Note: the title page and the references cited page do not count towards overall paper length for this assignment.
Begin with a definition and discussion of alternative archaeology (and its many names). You are required to make reference to at least 2 of the assigned readings/articles from the course in this section (Week 2 Documents on D2L). Next, profile/discuss 2 examples of alternative archaeologies using additional outside sources (here’s where you get to have fun with your research). You are not required to disprove claims made by these alternative archaeologies, but you are certainly welcome to comment on the facts presented by archaeology that contradict such claims. A minimum of 2 additionalsources is required for this section (for a minimum total of 4 sources for the final paper). Given the nature of the topic, you may find that your source material for your examples is not from the regular expected academic/scholarly sources required for an archaeology paper (that’s ok for this section). Lastly, discuss your thoughts on why alternative archaeologies are so popular with the public (the first person is acceptable for this section and you do not need to back up your reflection with sources unless you use additional research to help inform your discussion).
Note: your examples must be related to pseudoarchaeology, not pseudoscience in general, so avoid cryptozoology [Bigfoot, Loch Ness monster], UFO sightings, and Ghostbusters (sorry). You will still find plenty of aliens building pyramids and what not, along with lost continents, lost races, and crystal skulls; relevant hoaxes and curses are acceptable as well.
Archaeology is the search for fact. Not truth. If it’s truth you’re interested in, Doctor Tyree’s Philosophy class is right down the hall. So forget any ideas you’ve got about lost cities, exotic travel, and digging up the world. We do not follow maps to buried treasure, and “X” never, ever marks the spot. Seventy percent of all archaeology is done in the library. Research. Reading.

“Exploring Perceptions and Behaviors in Remote Work: A Qualitative Research Study” “Exploring Perspectives: Conducting Research Interviews and Surveys to Investigate Ordinary People’s Experiences, Beliefs, and Attitudes”
**THIS ISN’T YOUR TYPICAL ASSIGNMENT**
**I KNOW I’VE CHOSEN A WRITING SERVICE. HOWEVER, THERE MIGHT JUST NEED TO BE REVISIONS AND EDITS. UNLESS YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN RE-WRITE TO ACHIEVE A HIGHER GRADE. EITHER WAY, I WILL PAY THE SAME AMOUNT. JUST GET ME AN A!**
I’ve attached my current draft of the paper along with the assignment instructions, rubric, and templates. After reviewing my work, I’m concerned that it might not align perfectly with the given instructions. If necessary, I’m open to you completely rewriting it!
The assignment requires incorporating 8-10 interview protocols or questions, or 12-15 questions/prompts for a survey.
Please guide me in tuning up the paper to precisely match the instructions. Since this is my final exam, achieving a high grade, preferably an A, is crucial.
Thank you.
—————-Notes-on-my-paper-comparing-with-instructions——————
The paper largely complies with the instructions for your qualitative research project, but there are a few points to consider to ensure full compliance:
Research Requirement: The instructions specify conducting at least 3 interviews or collecting responses from at least 15 survey participants. The paper mentions conducting interviews with 15-20 participants and also using surveys. This exceeds the minimum requirements and is well-aligned with the instructions.
Structure (IMRaD): The paper is structured with clear sections that align with the IMRaD format, including:
Introduction: Explains the phenomenon of remote work, its significance, and the research question.
Methods: Describes participant recruitment, data collection methods, and ethical considerations.
Results: Presents findings on productivity, work-life balance, and job satisfaction.
Discussion: Discusses the implications of findings, compares them with existing literature, and acknowledges limitations.
Future Work: Suggests future research directions.
Appendices: The paper includes all required appendices (recruitment script, consent form, survey instrument, interview transcripts, and codebook for data analysis), which is a critical part of the instructions.
APA Style and Ethical Considerations: The paper adheres to APA style for citations and maintains high ethical standards with informed consent and confidentiality, as required.
Audience Consideration: The paper targets an academic audience, specifically English instructors and the professor, which aligns well with the instructions.
_________________________INSTRUCTIONS____________________________
Throughout this course you’ve been gaining experience joining conversations–first in the secondary source unit and conversations that take place via published scholarship, and then in the archival unit and conversations that are grounded in the past–and in this unit, you’ll enter yet another conversation. This time, you’ll enter a conversation that is based on people’s perceptions/individual behavior. As you did with the first two papers, you will begin with a research question. From there, you will then conduct interviews OR surveys to gather data and formulate an answer to your research question.
* You will need to create your own research question*
Qualitative research methods are most often used in the social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, and anthropology), education, and writing studies, but experience conducting qualitative research is valuable in a wide variety of disciplines and career fields.
You are welcome to develop a topic that you chose for either your secondary or archival project, or you can opt for a new topic, as long as it’s within the larger umbrella of the course.
One tip: Generally, you’ll want to choose a population that you’re already connected to in some way –– e.g. a community you belong to, such as an intramural sports league or D&D group, or a group of people that you know in real life (friends / family / etc). As you think about your topic, think about who you know or could speak to for the project.
Research Interviews
The research you conduct for this project will be different than your other projects thus far. Rather than reading sources or searching through archives, you will conduct at least 3 interviews with “ordinary people… whose experiences, beliefs, and attitudes pertain to the research question you’re asking” (Rhetoric of Inquiry, p. 233). These interviews should be approximately 15 minutes long (30 minutes max!), and you’ll then transcribe and analyze your interviews to extrapolate the results for your study.
Research Surveys
If you opt for surveys, you’ll need responses from at least 15 people. These surveys should be between 15-20 minutes to take. Again, after you have the responses, you’ll analyze your surveys to shape your results.
Audience
Your audience for your qualitative research paper is me and other English instructors like me who participate in academic conversations that take place through published scholarship and are interested in your topic but who may not be overly familiar with the particular groups or issues you are investigating.
Requirements
Research: As stated above, you must conduct at least 3 interviews or 15 surveys for this project.
Structure: IMRaD Template.docxDownload IMRaD Template.docx
Length: Your final paper should be 1700-2000 words total (not including the Abstract, References, or Appendices). You can use this breakdown as a general guideline for each section, but feel free to adjust to suit your specific needs.
Introduction 300-500 words
Methods 200-400 words
Results 500-700 words
Discussion 400-600 words
Future Work 100-200 words
Appendices: At the end of your paper, you will attach the materials you created to conduct your study.
Appendix A: The recruitment script used to invite people to participate in your study.
Appendix B: A blank copy of the informed consent form you gave to your participants.
Appendix C: The interview protocol you developed to conduct your interviews/Survey Instrument.
Appendix D: Your interview transcripts/Survey results.
Appendix E: The codebook you developed as you analyzed your interview transcripts/survey responses.
Use proper APA documentation for your citations and References page.
See chapter 15 of your Writer’s Harbrace Handbook for help with APA documentation.

“The Ethics of Physician-Assisted Suicide: Examining the Moral Implications and Kant’s Perspective”
Some people promote the idea that humans should have the right to die with dignity (see https://www.deathwithdignity.org/ ). Several states have legalized physician-assisted suicide (PAS). However, others may argue that a doctor prescribing a deadly prescriiption violates that doctor’s Hippocratic Oath or claim that suicide by any means is immoral. Doing research and taking into consideration the actual laws concerning when and how a confirmed terminal patient would be able to request PAS, make an argument that it is or is not a moral action. Also see if you can find Kant’s famous argument on the immorality of suicide. Does he have a point or are there just some times when the morally right thing to do is to allow a person to end his or her suffering?

Title: Understanding the Risks and Challenges of Offshore Outsourcing in Software Development Projects
Review the article “A Risk Profile of Offshore-Outsourced Development Projects,” by Charalabos L. Iacovou and Robbie Nakasu. The subtitle of this article states “Even the best project management skills will not guarantee success in the complex world of offshore outsourcing.” In a 3 page paper, discuss this statement and respond to the following questions. Do you think that Delphi surveys used by the author were effective? Why or why not? What are the risks associated with offshoring jobs to other countries? What are some of the challenges of working with global virtual teams? How would you mitigate these challenges if you were going to manage similar projects? Identify the risks that offshore software developers faced as they were unable to interface with the end users to understand their true requirements of the application software. How would you correct these issues? What technical risks are eminent examples of offshoring from the UK, Germany, and USA to a less developed country? Why are reduced labor costs of production or development of IT oriented projects sometimes the most important factors used in offshoring, rather than the project success? Were change controls and project requirements effectively communicated? Why or why not?
