Climate Change: Droughts in Africa
I. Introduction
A. Background on droughts in Africa
Droughts have been occurring in Africa within the last few years and have been persisting more heavily in the last year or so. These droughts have heavily impacted the people, animals, and environment of Africa. These droughts have caused food scarcity, livestock losses, famine, lack of clean water, and much more. Droughts are not a new phenomenon in Africa however the recent droughts have intensified and it is all due to climate change. Climate change has made the droughts in Africa much stronger and more likely to occur.
B. Overview of climate change and its impact on weather patterns
Climate change, alternatively referred to as global warming, results from the convergence of numerous factors contributing to the observable shifts in recent years. Even though the terms global warming and climate change are used synonymously, they do not mean the same thing. “Climate change describes long-term shifts in the Earth’s weather patterns, which affect such factors as temperature, humidity, wind, cloud cover, and precipitation levels” (Gale, 2021). On the other hand, “global warming specifically refers to an increase in the Earth’s average surface temperatures caused by human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels” (Gale, 2021). Climate change occurs naturally due to Earth’s transformations, whilst global warming is attributed to human activities. The distinction between these two terms is important because one is natural while the other is causational. The actions of humans have accelerated climate change effects significantly. We are not only seeing this around the world but also in Africa with the droughts. Specifically, Gale declares, “in 2021 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) revealing how human activity has induced rapid climate change” (Gale, 2021). The report utilizes decades of research to substantiate that human-related activities, particularly the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, are driving and exacerbating global warming and climate change. The report also notes that there has been an increase in weather-related disasters much like the droughts that are occurring in Africa. Earth’s atmosphere requires greenhouse gases to regulate the Earth’s temperature, but the magnitude of greenhouse gases that have been released has caused significant changes in temperature and weather patterns across the globe. According to Gale, “the 20 percent increase in the average global concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that occurred between 1980 and 2020 accounted for over half of the total increase since the Industrial Revolution began around 1750” (Gale, 2021). This increase is a major factor in temperature changes and weather-related disasters. With that being said,
C. Thesis statement: Climate change has exacerbated drought conditions in Africa, leading to severe socio-economic and environmental consequences.
II. Understanding Droughts
A. Definition and types of droughts – Droughts are prolonged periods of dryness caused by the weather cycle. They have considerable impacts on the affected areas’ environment, agriculture, health, and economy. There are four different types of droughts. They are meteorological, hydrological, agricultural, and socioeconomic. Africa experiences all four even at the same time. The natural occurrence of droughts in Africa is due to weather patterns such as La Nina and El Nino or regular climate variability. The human-induced factor is due to greenhouse gas emissions increasing the global temperature, altering precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events. With the combination of natural weather patterns and increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, these droughts have become much more severe and common.
B. Causes of droughts in Africa (natural and human-induced factors) –
C. Historical perspective on drought occurrences in Africa
III. Climate Change and its Impact on African Droughts

Exploring Relationships in the Nutrition Study Data
1) Download the Nutrition study data and read it into R-Studio. We will work with the entire data set for this assignment. Use the IFELSE( ) function to create 2 new categorical variables. The variables are:
Alcohol_Use: 1 (yes) if Alcohol > 0
0 (no) if Alcohol=0
Age_retired: 1 if Age >= 65
0 if Age < 65 If you have trouble using the IFELSE( ) function in R, you could create these new categorical variables in EXCEL, and then just read them into R with the dataset. It works either way. Report the counts for each value of these 2 new categorical variables. 2) For this problem, we are going to see of smoking (SMOKE) is related to body mass (QUETELET). Here, Quetelet is the continuous dependent response variable (Y) and Smoke (X) is the categorical explanatory variable. Please complete the following: a) Obtain descriptive statistics on Y for each group. In a table report each group's sample size, mean, standard deviation, and variance. b) Clearly state the null and alternative hypotheses in words and symbols. c) Use R to obtain the test statistic and p-value for the classic pooled variance two sample T-test. Report the test statistic and p-value, and then state the decision to be made. d) Report the formula for the test statistic in part c) and verify the computer's computations using the descriptive statistics from part a). e) Calculate and report confidence intervals for both groups. Discuss the interpretation of the result based on confidence intervals. Is it consistent with the hypothesis test result? If they are different, which should you believe? 3) Moving into a more data analytic framework, then next question would be are there any 2 group categorical variables that exhibit differences relative to the Quetelet variable? Reframing this as more of a direction for an assignment - Using the variable Quetelet as the dependent response variable (Y), conduct hypothesis tests and obtain confidence intervals (for each group) to determine if there are group mean differences relative to the categorical variables: Gender (male vs female) Age_retired Alcohol_use You will need to clearly set up the null and alternative hypotheses, conduct the test with appropriate statistics, and interpret the individual group confidence intervals. Please use tables to summarize your findings. What decisions do you make from these results? How would you summarize the "story" that emerges from these analyses on the Body Mass Quetelet variable? 4) Using the CHOLESTEROL variable as the dependent response variable (Y), conduct hypothesis tests and obtain confidence intervals (for each group) to determine if there are group mean differences relative to: Gender (male vs female) Smoke Age_retired Alcohol_use You will need to clearly set up the null and alternative hypotheses, conduct the test with appropriate statistics, and interpret the individual group confidence intervals. How would you summarize the "story" that emerges from these analyses on the CHOLESTEROL variable? 5) Typically, in an open ended data analytic project, the analyst would look to see whether any of the potential response variables are related to the explanatory categorical variables of interest. To limit the amount of analytical work, for the FAT, FIBER, ALCOHOL variables, use a 95% confidence interval approach to compare groups, on average, for Gender (male vs female) Smoke Age_retired Alcohol_use Do NOT conduct or report on formal Hypothesis tests! How would you summarize the "story" that emerges from these analyses? 6) Given what you've found so far comparing groups, what is surprising to you? What turned up that you did not expect, if anything? What is it that would explain these results? What do you think should be the next steps to any analysis on this Nutrition data? Your write-up should address each task -

Part A
2 DuPont analyses
A. Retrieve the annual income statement and balance sheet for Eli Lilly and Co (LLY:NYQ) and Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX:NSQ) for the past five years, ending in the year 2023, from FT.com. Present this raw data in four tables as an appendix at the end of your report. (2 marks)
B. Conduct a five-component DuPont analysis on the companies’ profitability and present the results in a table with clear row and column headings in the main text of your answer. (4 marks)
C. Analyze the results of the DuPont analyses to identify the key drivers and trends of profitability (ROE) for each company (maximum 240 words). (6 marks)
D. Calculate the sustainable growth rate of these two companies using the median statistics from the last five years (e.g., using the median of ROE, not the ROE for each year). Only one sustainable growth rate for each company is calculated. Go to the Profile tab on FT.com, and under the Peer Analysis section, select Growth Rates from the drop-down on the right.
a. Compare the sustainable growth rate you calculated with the focal company’s (i.e.,
the same company’s) revenue, net income, capital expenditure, and dividend’s 5-year growth rates. Discuss the potential causes and implications of any differences (maximum 240 words). (6 marks)
b. Compare and discuss these two companies’ growth rates with their peers. Highlight
any potential strengths and weaknesses (maximum 240 words). (6 marks)
E. Based on your analysis, critically evaluate the relative strength of the financial statements of these two companies. Determine which company has a superior financial performance track record that is likely to be sustained in the future. Reference to external sources of information is encouraged, but only if they are relevant to understanding the ratio analysis (maximum 240 words). (6 marks)
3 Multistage growth model
A. Calculate the cost of equity of the two companies, using the following information:
a. Estimate the beta by downloading One-year daily close-price data in the year 2023
for the companies and the corresponding market index: S&P 500 INDEX(NX:IOM )
from FT.com. Report the estimation results (please include at least the estimated
coefficients and their standard error; no need to include this raw data in your answer or appendix). Please note that the downloaded data from FT.com is in descending order. Make sure the order by date is in ascending order before calculating returns for your regression. (2 marks) -

“Exploring Critical Reading Strategies: A Literary Analysis of [Novel Title]” “Exploring the Multifaceted Nature of Reader-Response Criticism: A Comprehensive Analysis of Literary Theories”
For this essay, your goal is to apply critical reading strategies to your reading and interpretation of your chosen novel. We have been using primarily one type of strategy, formalism, so far this semester to analyze the elements of literary form and how they create thematic meaning for readers. You may continue doing that same type of analysis for this essay, but you should do so with the understanding that a variety of other techniques exist in addition to formalism. You have done some reading on these theories in your textbook, and there are pages in Canvas focused on eight categories (Formalist, Biographical, Psychological, Historical, Gender, Mythological/Archetypal, Reader-Response, Deconstructionist), but other categories exist.
You will also integrate research into this essay. That research should include some scholarly criticism that has been done on your novel (if it’s available) as well as criticism of other works that you could apply to your interpretation of the text. Our school library and our Canvas course shell contain useful resources, and if you find good sources to share, I will add those to Canvas as well. Much of what is there has come from previous students engaged in this project. For additional resources, try searching the Sierra library databases with the phrase “literature AND criticism AND ____________.” In the blank space, add in whatever term, concept, or text feature you’re looking for. Play with different search phrases until you find something useful.
This exercise will expand your critical thinking skills in ways you may not immediately recognize, even if you never plan on taking another English class. The strategies for reading come from our desire to organize and systematize ways of gaining meaning from literature and to some degree for understanding our experiences as human beings. But they are also helpful in understanding how each reader applies his or her own sets of values to any text, from multiple perspectives. Almost every discipline has a system for organizing its particular knowledge, so it might be helpful to think of your own major and how it organizes its principles, ideas, theories, and so forth. I find it helpful to understand this myself since I feel that I suffer from information overload most of the time, so if I can compartmentalize all that information, I can deal with it.
The formal stuff:
Your research essay must be at least 3000 words (not counting works cited) and include a minimum of 5 pieces of research (This can include the text itself, and must make use of at least 2 in-depth critical analysis or reviews, such as articles from academic journals). Before turning to other sources about your novel, try to get a solid sense of your own concerns about the book and write from your experience with the primary text. Explore interpretive questions related to the critical reading strategy you’re most interested in. Then consult sources for backup and to explore your own ideas in more depth.
Your essay must have a Works Cited page (or Works Consulted page) and follow MLA 9 format. A Works Consulted page indicates what you’ve cited as well as readings you’ve done for the assignment but did not include in your essay (such effort scores Karma points, at the very least, and indicates a serious commitment to the project). This assignment is not as difficult as it may sound, since most of you have written essays already over 1100 words on shorter works in this class, and have already applied various critical reading strategies including formalist, cultural, historical, feminist, and so forth to your analyses.
Important Note:
Even though this handout talks about your responses to the novel, which are individually yours, you will not use first person (no “I”) at all in this essay. Many of the brainstorming questions you will find ask what you think, and you will write about that to be sure, but you will do so without saying “I think” or “When I read . . .” statements. Even reader-response criticism, which in its simplest form seems to rely on the individual reader’s reactions, is actually meant to account for more than one reader’s response. If you need help with turning first-person responses into third-person argument claims, ask me or use any of our tutoring services for help on that.

Title: “The Exclusion of Native Americans from Liberty and Rights in Early America: Resistance and Legacy”
United States History to 1877
Voices of Freedom
Give Me Liberty
1600 words
Pick an era in US History (Beginnings to 1877) and address this Big Picture Question: Who was
granted the liberty and rights, and who was excluded? Your paper will want to analyze the
following questions and prompts based on your selected Voices of Freedom document(s):
What specific rights and liberties are you going to address?
Who did not have access to these freedoms and why were they excluded? In other words,
what was the justification for their exclusion? [Note: I highly suggest focusing on one
group/demographic, rather than trying to address several groups.]
How did those that were excluded respond? Go beyond the exploitation, marginalization,
and oppression. Instead display their agency, detailing how they were active agents of
change.
Address their legacy: What accomplishments did they make (think short- and/or long-
term)? As Margaret Mead stated, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed
citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
It is important to understand that successful writing requires students to write a coherent essay, create an effective introduction, organize a “storyline,” and come to a conclusion. In addition, all assertions must be justified with evidence. Remember, everyone has a right to their own opinion, but must backup it up with real evidence, and real evidence requires citations.
Essays are to be 1,500-2,000 words and double-spaced. All papers must have a title, integrate specific cited evidence from your Voices of Freedom and Give Me Liberty books. You are not required to cite other sources. Students may use additional sources but must submit them with the Phase I deadline. Keep in mind, they must be credible and academic sources (that means no Wikipedia!). Do not be shy and seek the help of our wonderful research librarians. Finally, use the same citation format/standards as you did for Discussion Boards and Short Essays and include a works cited page at the end.
If you are having difficulty choosing a topic, ask yourself the following questions:
What era interests me? What era do I want to learn more about?
What topics interest me? What do I want to learn more about?
Politics and government? Women’s Rights? Civil Rights? Foreign Policy? Culture and
Society? War? Racial and ethnic minorities? Economics? -
