Hello everyone,
Maintaining a work-life balance is essential for a company’s
success. Employees who feel valued and well-rested tend to work harder
and produce better output. However, there is still a debate on what
work-life balance means. Should it only include paid labor or factor in
family, community, and friendships? This question has been a research
topic for years, and many companies still struggle to find a good
balance, affecting employees’ overall well-being.
Heterosexual women are the most vulnerable group when it comes
to work-life balance. They often have to juggle work responsibilities,
caring for their children, and other household chores. Companies must
broaden their HR policies to address this issue and promote fairness and
diversity. For instance, companies should allow employees to take time
off for personal reasons, even if they don’t have paid time off (PTO) or
are not going on maternity leave. Although some may abuse this policy,
it will improve most employees’ mental health and performance.
Other countries, such as Australia, have implemented laws and
acts to improve work-life balance. For example, they allow part-time
work, time off for family and children, and the ability to negotiate
deadlines without consequences. The United States should also consider
implementing similar policies to make employees happier, healthier, and
more satisfied.
Electronics, such as smartphones and laptops, can also hinder
work-life balance. Employees often feel pressured to check their emails
and websites outside of work hours, affecting their mental well-being.
To address this issue, HR and management should enforce the rule that
work should only be done during work hours and that employees should
only be expected to answer the company’s needs and demands during work
hours.
To improve work-life balance, I recommend educating HR and
management on its importance and enforcing policies that promote it. I
would conduct research and present it to the team with a PowerPoint
presentation. On-going monitoring should include surveys,
questionnaires, and quarterly performance check-ins.

Both books for this assignment, Mendez v. Westminster: School Desegregation and Mexican-American Rights and The Sleepy Lagoon Murder Case: Race Discrimination and Mexican-American Rights, deal with the place of Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans in American society, particularly in Southern California, in the 1940s. While much of Anglo society racialized those of Mexican descent, in the eyes of the law Mexicans and Mexican-Americans were classified as “white.”
This assignment asks you to reflect on the ways that those of Mexican descent were affected by this racialization and the ways in which they and their allies fought to attain equal status in society and particularly in the law, within the context of Southern California.
1) What marked Mexicans and Mexican-Americans as a separately defined group in the eyes of Anglos? In what ways did Mexicans/Mexican-Americans resist this separate definition? Did Mexicans/Mexican-Americans themselves seek to be seen as a separately defined group, and if so how, why, and to what ends?
