Our final discussion focuses on how we can be change agents toward causes we feel tied to. It is common for sociology students to feel deflated and overwhelmed at the end of a course because of the sheer number of issues we’ve tackled together. You may have been frustrated throughout the term because your perception of right or wrong challenged you. This is all okay-we come from different cultures and communities, and this is what makes us unique, and what forms society.
We will focus now on ethnocentrism’s role in many areas of our lives, specifically in the workplace. Ethnocentrism can be damaging at an organization’s core, especially toward those who face mistreatment or feel unwelcome based solely on their constructed identities. People who exhibit ethnocentrism in the workplace are not only putting their careers at risk but missing opportunities to flourish and advance with colleagues and customers of different backgrounds.
So, curbing ethnocentrism is an important personal and societal goal, and it’s essential for careers:

Title: Exploring Social Stratification: Systems and Marx’s Perspective
Instructions
Social stratification is the structured inequality between different groups of people. Karl Marx provided one of the earliest explanations of the conditions of social stratification within societies. His explanations focused on an economic analysis of capitalism as a primary reason for social stratification. Marx identified the conflict between social classes as one of the major reasons for social stratification.
The class system is one of the four systems of stratification that have existed in societies around the world. Think about the other systems of stratification that sociologists have identified.
Write an essay in which you identify and define the remaining systems of stratification. Next, discuss the major components of Karl Marx’s view of social stratification. -
Title: Examining Color-Blindness and Racism: Myths and Realities
Learning objective:
LO 9.1 Contrast the myth and reality of race, race and ethnicity, and minority and dominant groups; discuss ethnic work. (p. 260) LO 9.2 Contrast prejudice and discrimination and individual and institutional discrimination; discuss learning prejudice, internalizing dominant norms, and institutional discrimination. (p. 265)
Description:
After watching the video, answer the following questions. Each question (number) should be answered in 75-150 words. Be sure to cite information/data/arguments taken from external sources.
1. What does it mean to be racially color blind? What are the assumptions of color-blindness? Evaluate the validity of these assumptions.
2. We observe differences from a young age and create categories. Society is structured around many of these categories. What happens if we try to suppress certain categories? Think about your own racial/ethnic identity—or any part of your identity—what if you were told it didn’t matter? How would it impact you?
3. Color-blindness is offered as a solution to racism. Can color-blindness solve racism? Why or why not? What other reasons did the video pose as reasons people promote color-blindness? Discuss the validity.
4. If being color-blind is not the solution to racism, then what is? How can we see color and not ignore our own or others’ identity without racism and discrimination?

“Evaluating Questions and Demonstrating Knowledge”
Please read the material and answer questions. There are three questions in total.
There are generally three types of questions you will encounter, and each will be evaluated in different ways (we included sample questions below):
Content-based: these are the most straightforward as they focus on specific content and your understanding of that content. You are evaluated on your knowledge and understanding.
Application: these ask you to apply knowledge to an issue or problem associated with the asset content. You are evaluated on your knowledge, creativity, and ability to apply concepts and ideas.
Opinion: these ask for your personal thoughts on a topic or issue. While they seem like the easiest questions, they can be the most difficult to answer well. You are evaluated on your ability to articulate an informed opinion – your personal thoughts backed up by course material. It requires knowledge, creativity, and application. -

“The Power of Self-Expression and Breaking Free from Social Constructs”
Choose one of the prompts below and respond to it in a double-spaced 4-5-page essay.
Prompt 1:
Why do you think some people are quick to judge other’s ways of expressing themselves (e.g. how they carry themselves and speak) and their tastes in music, films, tv shows, literature, food, clothes, style, etc.? Do judgements say more about the person who’s judging, or the person/people being judged?
Prompt 2:
Without any socially constructed identity to pin on yourself, who are YOU? (Tip: Keep the identities that bring you joy and discard all others. And remember that you are entirely capable of creating your own self and, therefore, your own story. 😃)
Prompt 3:
If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you pursue?
(Hint 1: You can’t fail because failure is a social construct created by people who feel like failures. But their feelings have nothing to do with you. 😌 … So do what you love because you literally can’t fail!!!!! 😀 #joyisyourguide)
(Hint 2: You can’t fail. I promise. Because they’re your passions. So do it!!!!! 🤩)
Prompt 4:
How PERFECT are YOU in this PERFECT moment? 🫶
Prompt 5:
Who is the highest (ONLY) authority in ***YOU-R *** life? 😃
Prompt 6:
Free will is a word, you are the meaning. Perfect sees perfect. Tell me something.
Prompt 7:
How is acknowledging that things are social constructs (that is, created/invented) both liberating and awe-inspiring? Refer to our social constructs cheat sheet and to our “rules” for sociology and life… if you’d like. 😎
Prompt 8:
Your life is your home. You wouldn’t just invite anyone in. 🏡 What’s the most important thing you screen others for when considering granting them access to you? 🔑
Prompt 9:
How free are you?
Ruminate on the word free and think about what that means. Wouldn’t you equate it with being happy? … And if that’s not true for you (in other words if you don’t feel free/happy) at this moment (it’s always this moment 😉), what changes do YOU need to make to MAKE it true? 😃 Who’s holding YOUr happiness captive? Is it really somebody else? Or are you just afraid of what others might think if you did what actually makes YOU happy? -
Title: Deviance and Social Control in The Phone Call
For this Application Assignment, please view the film, The Phone Call, available through Laurel Ridge and Kanopy. Please note, this film deals with the serious topic of death by suicide.
Even though the film focuses on empathy, sociologists might explore theories of deviance and social control evidenced in the interactions across the characters and portrayals in the film. For your application assignment, answer the following questions:
Describe an instance, or example, of the way Labeling Theory might contribute to deviant behavior for either Heather or Stanley.
How might Heather and Stanley’s social networks and interactions contribute to their engagement in (or not) deviant actions.
Consider Strain Theory, and identify specific cultural ideals/goals that might influence Heather or Stanley’s behaviors to accept (conformity/ritualism) or reject (innovation/retreatism) the institutional means.
Identify examples in the film where Heather or Stanley’s connections to society act as controls on their behavior, or where the absence of control leads to deviance.
In your opinion, does society consider a person with thoughts of suicide as deviant, a violation of norms? Does this impact the ways we talk about suicide? Explain -

2. Based on your own observations and class materials, what factors increase the likelihood that an individual will conform to group pressure?
3. Mention and describe two notable examples (from history, current events, case studies, etc.) in which group pressure was a key element in an individual’s decision-making process?
4. Compare and contrast the Milgram and Asch experiment. What kind of insights do these experiments reveal about the role of group and social conformity in contemporary social life?
