  • The Power of One: How Political Socialization Shapes Our Ability to Change the World

In this, your final paper, I want you to use both the material from BOTH chapters and your own experiences to tell me why you do now know, that one person, YOU, can indeed change the world and what it is you intend to do? Make SURE you cover POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION from both the reading AND the video!
In order to adequately complete the read & respond assignments, you need to read the entire content assigned.
    READING RESPONSES
Your task is to select any theme from this weeks chapter(s) or readings and then braid them together with your own narrative voice as the third section (examples have been emailed to you.)
Responses should be no less than 3 nor more than 4 pages in bookman old style or any old timey type writer font, double spaced and submitted via blackboard on the dates due,  APA formatting required.
    EXPLAIN & DISCUSS
By explain, I mean: After completing the reading, take a moment to reflect. Then imagine how you might explain to a friend the key concepts, ideas and information from this reading that you think is most important to understand and remember. Ideas should be clearly stated and fully explained.
By discuss, I mean: Express your own thoughts in response to the key concepts, ideas, and information from this reading. In what ways does it make sense to you? In what ways does it seem significant to broader societal issues? In what ways does it shift the perspective of the ways in which many people think? Etc. In what ways can you put these readings “in dialogue” with other things you’ve learned, in other courses, through your own experiences, with what you’ve learned from social media, popular culture, and news media, etc?
    USING QUOTES
Each of your response should utilize at least THREE quotes from the text that you engage, consider the following when using quotes.
Quotes should be 1-2 sentences in length; 1 sentence works best.Integrate the quote into your paragraph; don’t just plot it down.
Include the author’s last name and page number of the quote at the end of the sentence in which the quote appears.

  • Sociological Concepts: Understanding Today’s Social World Introduction Sociology is the study of human behavior and social interactions within society. Throughout this semester, we have learned about various sociological concepts that help us better understand the complexities of the

Please identify and apply eight sociological concepts we’ve learned about this semester that you find especially helpful to understanding today’s social world. For each concept, first provide a thorough definition and explanation that cites the readings from class, including a page number indicating where the concept can be found in the textbook. Next, discuss how the concept is useful for interpreting and understanding your own personal life, popular culture, the larger social structure, and/or a hypothetical research project. Here are three options for integrating and applying the concepts into an overarching theme:
Option One: Discuss how eight sociological concepts apply to your own background, upbringing, and social life. Select the concepts that you found most helpful in understanding your own social location (such as socialization, social class, gender, race/ethnicity, education, religion, family roles, group membership, deviance, etc.).
Option Two: Discuss how eight sociological concepts apply to an example of popular culture such as movies, shows, music, books, sports, or festivals/celebrations. Contemporary social and political issues can be explored here too. Pick something you’re interested in or would like to learn more about.
Option Three: Develop a hypothetical proposal for a sociological research project that applies concepts from the semester. The proposal should address the following elements: Key question(s), hypothesis, or broad topic for investigation; an outline of the aims of the research; overview of important literature (what is already known on the topic); description of the topic and explanation of why further research in the area is important (what we need to know); details of how the research would be carried out; discussion of the limitations of the study. Feel free to get creative!
The Term Paper should be about 8 pages long, double-spaced, and must integrate reading materials from the course textbook. Please make sure the concepts are in bold when they’re introduced and include specific page numbers where the concept can be found in the textbook. The paper should be structured with an introduction, body and conclusion and saved in rich text format or Word Document to avoid problems related to uploading. If using sources from outside of class, be sure to include a properly formatted woks cited/references page at the end of your paper (any citation style is acceptable, as long as it’s consistent). If only using class readings, no works cited page is needed, but the textbook and page numbers should be cited within the body of the paper.
The assignment is worth 80 points and is due on Blackboard by the end of Week Seven at midnight.
    Overview of Topics
As a reminder, here are the broad topics we’ve addressed this semester, but feel free to select more specific concepts from within the chapters:

  • “Gentrification in South Florida: A Case Study of Little Haiti” Introduction: This memo will analyze the case of gentrification in Little Haiti, a neighborhood in Miami, Florida. The thesis of this memo is that gentrification in Little The Impact of Gentrification on Local Culture, Businesses, and Social Relations in South Florida

In Module 6, you learned about gentrification as a particular kind of neighborhood change associated with changing class composition, spatial transformation, and displacement of poor and working class residents. This urban phenomenon has been observed in U.S. and European cities since the 1960s. In this memo assignment, we are going to focus our attention locally and examine how gentrification has impacted different neighborhoods in the South Florida urban region.
Your task in this memo is to learn and write about a recent case of gentrification in South Florida. In doing so, you will apply ideas from the course to provide an original analysis of what you see as the main causes and social consequences of neighborhood change in the case you have chosen.
The case of gentrification that you analyze in this memo is up to you. Below I have provided a list of links to news articles, videos, and other resources about a few local cases to get you started. You can choose one of these cases, or study any other case that you can find enough information about to complete the assignment. Even if you choose one of the cases I’ve provided resources for, I encourage you to research and read beyond these resources. They are merely intended to serve as a starting point. The more you know about the case, the richer your description and analysis will be.
The process and requirements for the memo are outlined in the steps below.
    Steps in the Memo-writing Process:
Step 1: Choose a case study of gentrification that you would like to analyze. Read news articles, watch videos, and find other resources until you have clear sense of a) What the neighborhood was like prior to gentrification; b) When it started to be gentrified; c) How the neighborhood has changed (or is changing) as a result of gentrification; and d) the major driving factors that caused this process to unfold. Make sure to take careful notes as you go, so you can organize the information effectively and provide citations for any specific information you cite in the memo. [Note: You should read all of the assignment requirements at this stage, to make sure you find enough information to complete the memo].
Step 2: Your memo must introduce, explain, and apply at least one idea, concept, or theory of urban change from the readings or lectures in Modules 5 or 6. So, once you have gathered all of the material that you need about the case, review the core concepts and theories that we covered in the last two modules.  Think about how these ideas might be relevant to the case you have read about.
Step 3: Draft your memo, which should have the following components:
    a) an original title that hints at what you will present in the memo;
    b) One introductory paragraph that states the case you have chosen to analyze, and establishes a thesis statement (i.e. your overall argument about the main causes and consequences of gentrification in this case);
    c) One background paragraph that provides more information about the case you have chosen. Make sure to explain to the reader how the neighborhood was before gentrification, when it became gentrified, and how it has been changed spatially and/or socially since gentrification began.
[Note: The concept, idea, or theory that you use from the readings or lectures should be introduced and applied in either section d or section e of the memo]
    d) One to two paragraphs in which you explain why gentrification occurred in this case. Was it driven by changing consumer preferences? The arrival of a new social groups? The work of local real estate developers? City government agencies? Other factors? You must provide and cite specific evidence from the sources you used to learn about this case.
    e) One to two paragraphs in which you analyze the social consequences of gentrification. How did it affect the original inhabitants? Who has benefited and who has lost from the changes that the neighborhood experienced? Did gentrification give rise to local conflicts? What other ways did neighborhood change affect local culture, businesses, or social relations? In this section, you should also provide (and cite) specific evidence from the sources you used to learn about the case.
    f) A brief concluding paragraph that tells the reader what the main takeaway of your analysis is. What have we learned from your paper about the causes and consequences of gentrification in South Florida?
    g) A Reference page that includes full citations for any article(s), lecture(s), or video(s) that you used in your memo. Make sure to use Chicago Style Links to an external site.for both internal citations and final references (Note: the reference page does not count toward the overall word limit).
Step 4: Proofread carefully before submission! You should check for three things: a) typos, incorrect punctuation, missing words, spelling and grammatical errors; b) correct reference format; and c) overall coherence of the memo – Do I have a clear argument? Does my writing make sense?  Does the body of the memo match what I said I would show in the introduction?
Formatting Requirements (Follow carefully to avoid losing points):
    1) Upload your final memo as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF file ONLY.
    2) Include a header
    3) Word count: 1,000-1,300. This does not include header, title, or references.
    4) Double-spaced
    5) Times New Roman, Size 12 Font

  • “From Morocco to Luxembourg to the USA: A Personal Perspective on the Challenges and Opportunities of Immigration and Racism”

I chose to explore the subject of
immigration as someone who has personally experienced it multiple times: moving
from Morocco to Luxembourg and then from Luxembourg to the USA. These
experiences have given me a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities
that come with being an immigrant. As a mother who lived in Luxembourg and then
moved with my husband to the USA, I’ve observed stark differences in how racism
manifests in Europe compared to the US. In the US, a woman can wear a hijab and
pursue any profession she desires, such as being a nurse, doctor, teacher, or
even a police officer. Additionally, women can wear a burkini and swim at the
beach without issue. In contrast, in France, wearing a hijab to school is
prohibited, among other restrictions. While racism exists in the US, the
government actively works to combat it, which is why I find this subject
    important to discuss.

  • The Shift from Progressive to Regressive: Exploring the American Tax System Over the Past Four Decades The Impact of Social Media on Business: A Critical Analysis of “Social Media and Its Impact on Business and Management” by Gohar et al. (2016) In their article “Social Media and Its Impact on Business and Management,” G

    Writing Prompt
Explain how the American tax system has gone from “progressive” to “regressive” over the past 4 decades. As you explain the “regressive” system, please outline what Heiner means by the “effective tax rate” and how this leads to tax regression. Please provide at least 2 specific corporate examples of this process from Heiner’s chapter (e.g., General Electric, Walgreens, Apple). What is “investment income” and how does this help explain the regressive nature of the current tax system? Finally, please explain how the current tax system increases inequality and weakens macroeconomic growth (i.e. GDP) potential for the overall society. In doing so, focus on the issue of “consumption” (as specifically outlined in the chapter section titled “Inequality: Bad for Business”).

  • Title: The Impact of Humanities on Personal and Professional Growth

Draft the slides and speaker notes for your presentation. The purpose of the speaker notes is to fill in the details you believe are necessary to include in the presentation in order to address the critical elements below, but will not necessarily be included on the presentation’s slides. Your speaker notes can either be bulleted points for each step of your presentation or more developed paragraphs to help you deliver the presentation. This part is up to you; either way, these notes should contain substantial details to address each of the required parts of your presentation.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
Provide a brief overview of your artifacts, theme, and thesis statement. How are they situated within the domain of the humanities?
Explain how the theme, as it is expressed in the cultural artifacts, and thesis statement impact the audience. In other words, how is the theme relevant to members of the audience? Why should the audience care about your thesis statement? Support your response with specific examples from your exploration document.
Describe the evidence from subjective and objective cultural analyses that you have to support your conclusions about the impact of the theme and cultural artifacts on you personally and on your audience. Support your response with specific examples from your exploration document.
Explain why the theme and cultural artifacts are important to you personally. In other words, why did you select these artifacts to study? Why did you select your theme, especially if there are other themes that could apply?
Explain how studying the humanities can give you both a personal and professional advantage. In other words, what is the benefit of studying the humanities?
Explain why the humanities are important to society. In other words, what do the humanities tell us about our own culture and experiences? How do the humanities impact us? Support your response with specific examples from your exploration document and your own personal and professional experiences.
Communicate your message in a way that is tailored to your specific audience. For instance, you could consider your vocabulary, your audience’s potential current humanities knowledge or lack thereof, and what is specifically important to the audience.
