  • “Systems Thinking and the Social Determinants of Health: Addressing Health Inequities through Micro and Macro Interventions”

Systems Thinking & The Social Determinants of Health
    Start Assignment
    Due May 1 by 11:59pm
    Points 25
    Submitting a file upload
For this assignment, students will apply Systems Based thinking to a public health problem by first identifying and describing a specific health inequity that disproportionately affects a marginalized group. Using frameworks provided in class, students will then research the determinants of their chosen health problem; namely the specific structural and systemic factors that contributed to the health problem. Students will then propose an intervention to address their selected health problem and promote health equity in the chosen community. Clearly articulate SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) objectives for your micro and macro level interventions.
This assignment will include an optional outline due April 17th. Outlines will be reviewed in class via peer review sessions.  This outline may be a detailed layout of your planned paper or can simply be notes/rough ideas to go over with a peer. Additional instructions to be provided in class.
Maximum 10 page (5 points each)
Part 1 Identify and describe a specific public health problem that disproportionately affects a particular marginalized group.
Part 2 Discuss the relevant social and systemic determinants that engender the public health problem.
Part 3 Micro-intervention: Formulate a plan to engage with a client (real or imagined) facing this particular problem (use a pseudonym to preserve client confidentiality). Advise them on the specific resources, supports, and social programs available to them in their specific community using real world examples.
Part 4 Macro-intervention: Design a community level advocacy, strategy, policy or intervention that specifically addresses the determinants that you described in Step 2
Part 5 Evaluation: Create a plan for evaluating the efficacy of your proposed interventions. How might you measure or obtain feedback on your interventions? (ex. development of a survey, focus groups, individual interviews, use of an evidence-based tool to measure outcomes, etc.)

  • “Exploring the Dynamics of Power: The Impact on Knowledge, Privilege, and Race Relations in the US Marijuana Industry”

    Use this phrase
“…examine the dynamics of power and how it shapes such issues as knowledge, privilege, gender, economies, religion, environment and/or race relations.”
You could examine the power of the tobacco or alcohol industries. Or power drug cartels have lost because they are no longer the main source of marijuana in the US since most marijuana found in the US is grown in the US and does not need to be produced by cartels.

  • “Research Evaluation Proposal: Data Collection, Analysis, and Ethical Considerations”

This is a continuation of a previously written research evaluation proposal paper that is attached. The instructions are :
    3. Data collection methods and measures (1 page)
This section should provide a detailed description of your data collection methods and the measures that you plan to use in your evaluation. The data collection methods should include how often you will be collecting data and how long your data collection should take each time, as well as the total length of the study. If you intend to use pre-existing measures (such as an existing depression measure), indicate why you chose the measure and provide a citation (or multiple citations) for the measure and its validation. Whether you are using a pre-existing measure or one that you are creating, include the measure in an appendix to the evaluation project.
This section will be graded on the degree of fit of the methods and the measures to the research question and type (purpose) of research that you have proposed.
    4. Data analysis plan (1 page)
This section should provide details on how you plan to analyze your data. A quantitative study design needs to include what software you would use to analyze the data, which statistical tests you would use with which key variables and why, and what the steps of analysis will be (if applicable). A qualitative study design needs to include what theoretical approach you are using to analyze the data, how this influences the data analysis and what the steps of analysis will be. You want to be sure to explain how your data analysis choices connect with determining the answer to your research question.
This section will be graded on the accuracy and appropriateness of fit of the data analysis plan to the (1) research question, and (2) levels and types of data collected.
    5. Ethical considerations (1 page maximum)
This section of the project should show thoughtful consideration of potential ethical issues pertaining to the evaluation and/or the implications of its outcomes. As a reminder, ethical issues in social work research are discussed in Rubin & Babbie at the end of Chapter 4 and throughout Chapter 5 (ATTACHED). Institutional Review Boards (IRB) in organizations such as universities and hospitals use ethical principles such as those in The Belmont Report: respect for persons, beneficence and justice. Ethical considerations primarily concern potential harm to individual research participants. The NASW Code of Ethics includes material on Evaluation and Research. Examples of ethical considerations include autonomy to choose participation, risks of participation, and equal opportunity to participate in the research. In thinking about your research topic, design and methods, what are some of the ethical considerations you would need to keep in mind as a researcher, and/or how have you designed the research to address ethical issues (be specific)?
    6. Justice implications (1 page maximum)
This section of the project should show thoughtful consideration of potential justice issues of the evaluation topic, conduct of the evaluation and/or the implications of its outcome. Many of the research questions in social work are grounded in the profession’s orientation to advance social justice, equity and inclusion. If your question reflects this orientation, how does it connect to advancing social justice? In the conduct of research, there are justice issues related to who we include in the research and how accessible we make research participation across social groups; you will want to consider how your research handles such accessibility. Finally, research results can be used for many purposes, including advocacy. How might the results from your study be relevant or applicable for advocacy, and in what way? Justice issues concern potential benefits to larger groups, either disadvantaged or marginalized groups, including clients of a particular agency/program, or the society as a whole.

  • The Intersection of Macro Policy-Making and Micro-Social Work: Understanding the Importance and Relevance As a social work student, I have always been drawn to the micro level of practice, where I can directly work with individuals and families to address

For this assignment, write a three-page narrative (does not require a title page or references) exploring your thoughts on the following:
Describe, in your own words, the importance of understanding macro policy-making with micro-social work. In what ways do you see that the content of this course has value and will be relevant in the work that you will do in your future social work career? Give two specific examples. What subject matter or topic was the most meaningful to you personally, and why?
What policy issue do you wish we had learned more about (or spent more time on), and why?
Overall, how much do you think you learned about social welfare policy during this semester that you did not already know before taking this class?
