  • Title: The Ongoing Struggle for Social Justice: A Look at the Exclusion of Mujeres in the Chicano Movement and the Impact of the School to Prison Pipeline on Latinxs.

    1. Mujeres have been excluded from the Chicano movement since the early days, why is that? What is Chicana Critical Rhetoric and Chicana Feminism. Explain the history of Chicana Feminism. What are some contemporary social justice issues impacting Chicanas (think of workforce, education, immigration, policing)?
    2. Under education and over criminalization: Explain the School to Prison Pipeline, and how it has impacted Latinxs. What are some of the historical conflicts between the police and the Latino immigrant community? Explain some of the challenges of Federal and State legislation aimed to improve education, and aimed to criminalize immigrants (Think prop187, DREAM Act, three strikes law, etc).

  • Title: “The Voting Rights Act of 1965: Protecting Our Right to Vote”

    Students will work on their project for the quarter on the Voting Rights Act of 1965. They will compose either a 35-slide power point presentation or a Trifold Self Standing Project Display Board on the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This assignment will be due on Friday by the end of the school day. They will need to address each of the following questions within their presentations:
    What is the Voting Rights Act of 1965?
    How did it happen?
    What were some of the major concerns and how were they addressed?
    Name some of the leaders and those individuals against the act.
    What federal law protects me from discrimination in voting?
    Where did the Voting Rights Act come from?
    What does the Voting Rights Act do?
    What does the Justice Department do to enforce the Voting Rights Act?
    Will the Voting Rights Act expire?
    What was a major impact of the Voting Rights Act of 1965?
