RESEARCH PROJECT: PAPER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
This assignment is the culmination of the research, planning, and pre-writing you have compelted thus far in the course. The end product of this paper is a final draft of your paper for review by your instructor. Ultimately, this paper will answer the research question you identified in the first module by presenting you conclusions in the form of an organized argument that is supported by scholarly research. The instructions below explain precisely what is expected of the paper.
INSTRUCTIONS
The following are the basic guidelines for the paper:
• The research paper should be between 2,000–2,500 words.
o This minimum and maximum are the range for the paper. You have flexibility within that range, but you must be within it.
o This range does not include the Title Page, Bibliography, or Footnotes. Any words accumulated for those Turabian elements are additional to the minimum/maximum word count.
• The paper should include these basic elements of a paper:
o An Introduction paragraph that introduces the problem within the scholarly context and offers the thesis as the last sentence of the first paragraph. This pargraph should be about 10% of the length of the paepr.
o The Body of the paper should be the supporting paragraphs represented by the outline the student submitted.
 Each paragraph of the Body should include a topic sentence, research to support the claim, and a statement that explains how the research relates back to the thesis.
 Every paragraph in the body should present research and should cite the research with footnotes.
o The Conclusion of the paper should summarize the main points of the argument without introducing and new information. This paragraph should be about 5-10% of the length of the paper.
• The paper must include at least 8 scholarly references in addition to the Bible.
o These sources should reflect the previous submissions you have used in this course with any recommended changes.
o Sources are introduced with signal tags in the body of the paper.
o Sources should be used in a variety of ways including quotes, summaries, and paraphrases.
o Sources that are not scholarly or are tertiary will not count toward the minimum scholarly research requirement.
o The Bible, while certainly an important source, is not scholarly and should not be included on the Bibliography.
• The paper must be formatted in correct Turabian style using the Notes-Bibliography style. Please see the sample, guide, and template provided through School of Divinity Writing Guide to ensure you format the elements of the paper correctly.
• The paper should not use headings and subheadings as these are typically reserved for longer papers (20+ pages required, or 10+ pages recommended). Since we are less than those guidelines for this course, we will not use them.

This assignment is designed to replicate a comprehensive final exam, of sorts, focusing on our modules’ presentations. These are the embedded PowerPoint presentations with accompanying oral lectures. Allow 1 page per Module. Students may write more than 1 page per module.
Instructions
List the title of each presentation, then present a short reflection on that presentation. Here are the presentation titles, which coincide with module titles. These will serve as the subtitles in your essay.

(2) a discussion of guidelines to practice interfaith/interreligious dialogue in which you compare and contrast at least two sets of guidelines (at least 500 words)

(3) a personal reflection about your own practice of dialogue with someone from a different religion (the more different the better; describe your thoughts and emotions before, during, and after the dialogue) (at least 1000 words)
Section (3) Meeting with someone in person to engage in dialogue is preferred. If this is not possible due to current health considerations, virtual or phone meetings may be substituted. The full point requirements for this section in the rubric include meeting at least two times.(see: attached rubric)
(4) a conclusion in which you explain what you have learned about yourself and the religion you engaged in dialogue (at least 500 words)

In this assignment, students will create 2 presentations in annotated outline form. Each might be 1-2 pages in length.
The purpose of this assignment if for students to demonstrate sensitivity and attention to two different audiences, one secular and the other faith-based.
Instructions
Students are to imagine conducting a 1-hour presentation on “sexual identity” to these groups:
1. Public high school teachers who are dealing with an increasingly divergent population of students.
2. A convocation of ministers in your church’s denomination who are dealing with an increasingly divergent population of parishioners.

Each student will be required to read Augustine’s Confessions and Fredrich Nietzsche’s The
Anti-Christ. The student will provide a four page summary of one of the books and a two page

After reading the
book of Esther and the corresponding textbook materials, review the
conversation between Esther and Mordecai in Esther 4:1-17. In 4:14, Mordecai
replied to Esther, “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for
such a time as this?” Develop your reflective essay by responding to the
following two questions: 1) As related to Esther and God’s redemptive mission,
what is the significance of timing, the place, and the choice to be made by

Instructions
Based on the Lesson Two materials, consider the following scenario and do the exercise in a Word format document for submission.

The scenario:
Pastor Payton faces a dilemma: duty and results seem to clash. The church he leads is in a poor community. The president of a social agency, a church member, asks to use the church building for distributing sterile needles to drug addicts. Good results justify the practice: Statistics show that fewer drug addicts transmit infectious diseases like AIDS when they use sterile needles. The deacons, however, think the church must take a stand: Illegal drugs are absolutely wrong. The church has a duty to preach against sin, but handing out needles condones sin. In fact, the deacons argue, preaching against sin will bring less drug use and thus less disease. Payton wants to preach the gospel faithfully, but he also wants the church to be active in the community. If it sees the church as being condemning and accusatory, the neighborhood will boycott the church. Payton fears losing his credibility with various groups; he realizes this could hamper his ministry.
Pretend you are Pastor Payton and work through this ethical problem using each of the teleological approaches we have discussed (ethical egoism, act utilitarianism, rule utilitarianism, and situationism). That is, first pretend you are Pastor Payton and you subscribe to ethical egoism. How would you work through this ethical problem? What is your rationale? What is your decision?
Repeat this process with each of the other teleological approaches, answering the same questions listed above.
