Instructions:
For your research proposal select one Independent
Variable from the column labeled independent variables (Blue in color) and 2 Dependent Variables from the column
labeled dependent variable (black in color) to use in your research proposal.
You will then need to develop 3 hypotheses (the null hypotheses are not a
hypothesis for this purpose). At least one hypothesis needs to be experimental
(includes an independent variable) and one needs to be correlational (2
dependent variables) the third hypothesis can be either type.
You will be required to write a research proposal (literature
review, methodology, and anticipated results, and reference section) using the
variables you selected for this project in this class. Your introduction will
start with your research question (why you are interested in this research) and
then citing the results of past research leading your reader to your three
hypotheses (a logical progression from the past research to your hypotheses). You
will also need to include definitions of your variables.
You will be responsible for searching the literature
data bases for past research that addresses the variables (hypotheses) you
select and their relationship to the other variables you selected (for example:
age differences in self-esteem [experimental] or the relationship between
procrastination and self-efficacy [correlational]). Later in the semester you
will be required to take a battery of questionnaire (in a single survey) to
provide data for the complete APA Paper required in the PSYC 4017. In the PSYC
4017 class you will be given data based on the variables you selected to
compute results so you can add a complete results and discussion to your final
paper and presentation in that class.
The citations for the actual surveys you selected for
your hypotheses will be provided to you for inclusion in your Method Section
and Final Proposal.

Lesson 1 Assignment #1: Review of Developmental Research
Part of conducting developmental research is reviewing and understanding published research studies. In this research project, you will choose one of the topics that will be covered in this course and find a research article in a journal on the chosen topic. Browse your text for ideas but any topic related to children or adolescents will work. Read the article and write a report about the article. Be sure to include a citation for your article (authors, title, journal, volume, pages and year). I prefer APA format but if you are familiar with a different format that will be ok too. In addition to including the main points of the study, give your personal reactions to the research findings. Again, you will need an actual research article describing a study not a review article. Most research articles are organized in the following sections: introduction, methods, results, discussion. Please complete this assignment with complete sentences in paragraph form. You may provide a brief overview of the article and then address the questions OR you may provide your overview within your answers to the questions below. Be specific in your responses.

Lesson 1 Assignment #3:Art, Development and Developmental Theories
In this assignment you are to select a painting/illustration that shows a child and/or children. Based on your selected artwork, identify and describe the three developmental processes and provide an example of each with reference to the painting. Identify and describe the period of development the individual appears to be in. Next,address the three main developmental issues (discussed in text) with reference to the individual/s in your painting. Use examples where appropriate. Lastly, how could your painting represent two of the developmental theories. That is, how could the representation be viewed from two of the developmental theories outlined in chapter 1(you can select any two)? Self-injury, such as cutting, used to be seen rarely, and only among girls (and a few boys) who had been sexually abused. Now, however, girls will cut for some of the same reasons that others engage in eating disorders. Many say that the physical pain helps them suppress emotional pain. Imagine this: one day your daughter comes home from school and tells you about a girl who was cutting in the bathroom. What do you tell her? What else do you do?

disorder relates to reward processing in the brain. Although you are expected to answer the questions

Part 3 (2 points): How could an understanding of the brain systems for reward and motivated behavior
help in the development of new treatments for the disorder? For this section, I would like you to think
about the question and come up with some thoughts on your own, rather than relying just on existing
sources of information.
