    ESSAY PREPARATION
    An application of Erikson’s
    psychosocial theory of development.
    Essay description:
Erik Erikson proposed a theory of
psychosocial development which describes the progression of the individual
through eight life stages, each of which
presents the individual with a particular psychosocial
    dilemma or crisis.
    Essay tasks:
    •
In this assignment you will be asked to introduce Erikson’s theory, to define the core concepts (lifespan, epigenetic,
psychosocial crisis, virtue) which inform it, and to
    identify the various stages.
    •
You will be asked to apply
Erikson’s theory by choosing ONE stage,
defining it in depth, and applying it to a personal example from your life.
    •
You will be asked to offer a critique of the theory, and to consider relevant
factors within the South African context.
    ESSAY PREPARATION
    The assignment needs to be
no more than 1000 – 1500 words in length (excluding
references), with 1.5 line spacing, and 12pt Times New Roman font.
    Draw on readings
from your textbook as well as the additional readings which have
been posted on Ulwazi to plan and write your assignment. You will be expected
to use at least two references in addition
    to the textbook.
    Please make
use of the outline in your course handout to help you to structure your
    assignment.
    Remember
that assignments need to be written in paragraph style, with full sentences, no
    bullet points, numbers, or lists.
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE: INTRODUCTION
    INTRODUCTION
    – no more than 100 words
    1. Write a paragraph to introduce the
topic and provide an overview of the structure of your discussion to follow.
Your introduction should begin with the overarching aim for your paper. Your
introduction should not be longer than 100 words (5%)
    •
Briefly introduce the topic and the specific
    structure of the essay.
    •
Describe the aim of the essay
    •
Describe how the essay is organised based on the
core argument (how you are achieving the aim) and outline the main themes
    covered in the essay
    •
    Be engaging and clear
    Potential issues:
    •
    Your introduction is not
    sufficiently clear
    •
    You have EITHER the aim
OR the outline of the essay or you didn’t write an introductory paragraph.
    •
    Definitions, references
or quotes must NOT be included in the introduction at all.
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE:
    BODY OF THE ESSAY
    2. In no more than 300 – 400 words,
briefly describe Erikson’s theoretical approach to human development. Include a
definition of the core concepts which underlie the theory. Identify the eight
stages and their relevant psychosocial crisis (15%).
    •
Introduce Erikson’s theory: in this section you
introduce the reader to the core concepts and stages of the theory.
    •
This part of the essay must provide an overview
of the theoretical concepts related to your discussion (viz. lifespan theory,
the epigenetic principle, psychosocial crisis, virtue)
    •
This part of the essay must include a brief
definition and description of each key term as it relates to the topic of
discussion as presented in the body of the essay to follow.
    •
This must be based on an academic reading and on
the use of correct terminology, definitions or explanation of key terms.
    •
NOTE: No direct quotes. Make sure that in this
section you give paraphrased definitions of key concepts, as well as
illustrating an understanding of this through a brief statement of how each
    factor influences behaviour.
    Potential
    problems:
    •
    Giving definitions
or information that are almost (or totally) identical to the source. (this is
    plagiarism)
    •
    Definitions are too
short and they are not coherently and cohesively connected.
    •
    Failed to identify
    all relevant concepts as instructed.
    •
    Failed to identify
all stages and their psychosocial crisis
    •
    This section is not
clearly explained, not referenced, not well paraphrased, incomplete, or
    irrelevant.
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE:
    BODY OF THE ESSAY
    3. In no more than 400-500 words,
select ONE of the stages which you can apply to someone you personally know (it
could be yourself). Outline this stage in detail, apply this stage to your
personal example, and identify the contextual factors in South Africa which may
impact the resolution or irresolution of this stage (45%).
    •
Describe ONE of Erikson’s stages which you can
apply to a personal example. Outline the characteristics of the stage,
including the psychosocial crisis and virtue.
    •
Identify someone you know (it could be
yourself), who is currently in this stage of development. Describe how they are
negotiating this stage, and whether they are managing or not managing the
    psychosocial crisis.
    •
For example, if you are describing a 9-yr old,
they will be in the stage of Industry vs Inferiority. Give some information
about them which supports whether they have achieved the virtue of competence,
or whether they are struggling with inferiority.
    •
Consider your example within the South African
context, and describe which contextual factors may impact on whether or not
    they successfully resolve that stage.
    Potential
    issues:
    •
    The chosen stage is
    not comprehensively introduced
    •
    The chosen personal
example does not fit with the stage which has been described
    •
    Insufficient detail
is given about the personal example
    •
    Too much information
is given about the personal example, and this section becomes anecdotal
    •
    There is
insufficient exploration of the contextual factors which may impact the
    resolution of the stage
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE:
    BODY OF THE ESSAY
    4. In no more than100-200 words, critique the
theory, identifying its strengths and weaknesses (20%)
    •
In this section you are required to give a critical
analysis of Erikson’s theory, consider its strengths and its weaknesses
    •
Consider these within a contemporary South
    African context
    •
    Remember: Critical evaluation entails
recognition of both strengths and weaknesses in a theory
    Potential
    issues:
    •
    You have not
provided any evaluation or did not attempt to reflect on the contributions or
limitations of Erikson’s understanding of psychosocial development.
    •
    Theoretical
evaluation is based on your own opinion without empirical support or a
reference to an appropriate academic source.
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE: CONCLUSION
    5. In no more than 100 words, conclude your
essay by highlighting important points that you have presented (5%)
    •
At the end of the essay it is necessary to
provide a concluding statement of how the discussion addressed the topic and
related theoretical reflection presented. The conclusion should briefly
highlight important aspects of this theory of psychosocial development in
relation to your discussion, critical evaluation, and argument presented in the
    body of the essay.
    •
    No
quotations, references, definitions, opinion, or anecdotal evidence to be
    included in the conclusion
    Ideal:
    You
have written a conclusion paragraph that briefly explains how the essay has
achieved its aims. It should be coherent and close the argument and focus on
the essay topic and preceding discussion.
    Potential
    problems:
    •
    There is a last
paragraph but it doesn’t conclude the discussion(e.g. you explained what you
have done but not what the main take-home idea is).
    •
    You are too vague or
there is no concluding paragraph at all. You have given a formulaic closure to
your essay or just your own opinion.
    •
    Final paragraph is
unrelated to topic or is still part of the essay
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE:
    REFERENCES
    6. Attach a separate page listing the
references you have used to comple your assignment.  All references must be in APA 7th format and
the title of the page must be “References”, NOT Bibliography (in-text
    referencing, 5%; reference list 5%)
    •
Do not number references or create a bulleted
list of references. Use the same order of authors as presented in the source.
Ensure that authors’ names and surnames are correctly spelled! Ensure that you
provide the date of a reference every time you use it in the body of the essay.
    Ideal:
    •
    You have followed
    APA guidelines to the letter.
    •
    You show that you
understand the importance of appropriate in-text referencing and appropriate
    referencing list.
    •
    You understand the
type of sources you are using and you are able to show that by means of good
    APA formatting.
    •
    You have not
    plagiarised or used AI.
    •
    You have minor or no
    typing errors.
    •
    Authors’ names are
    correct.
    •
    Your writing style
    is coherent and organised.
    •
    You have used and
referenced at least five sources, including the textbook.
    Potential problems:
    •
    You struggled following
the APA guideline and did not give sufficient time to ensuring that your
    referencing is correct
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE:
    ESSAY FORMAT
    Length: 1500 words (excluding references)
Line spacing: 1.5, Font: 12pt Times New
    Roman
    •
NO QUOTATIONS: Only paraphrasing may be used; no
direct quotations(i.e. use your own words).
    •
Write in full sentenced, paragraph style. Do not
use any bullets, lists, personalised abbreviations or personalised acronyms nor
    numbers (4 instead of “four”).
    •
    All definitions, theoretical claims, factual
statements and theoretical evaluations must be very clearly referenced at the
same place it is used in the essay, not only at the end of a paragraph.
    •
    No Secondary Referencing/Citing: Only reference
to the actual source you are reading, do not reference to another author/source
in that same article if you have not read it and have therefore not used it for
your essay. DO NOT reference lectures or lecture notes
    •
Do not include any additional information (such
as other theories of development) which is not asked, as this will cause you to
exceed the word limit and digress from the topic and essay tasks, causing you
    to lose marks.
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE:
    ESSAY FORMAT
    •
Do not reference any anecdotal sources (hearsay
or personal observation or personal experience)or personal opinion.
    •
Avoid the use of the first person in this
    assignment,  EXCEPT when referring to
your personal example. Ensure that all statements and claims are supported by
empirical evidence in reference to an academic source.
    •
Never reference to the course slides or lecture
content, or other non-academic sources (dictionaries, encyclopaedias,
    magazines…).
    •
Read the textbook and course readings for
    referencing of concepts & claims.
    •
Use only formal language and appropriate
academic terminology. Avoid the use of colloquial terms or conversational
language e.g. “Adolescent” as opposed to “teenager” or “’tween”, “Neonate” vs.
“baby”, “Children” vs. kids, “early childhood” vs. toddler, “middle childhood”
    vs. younger children …
    •
PLEASE NOTE: Additional diagrams, media or
images are to be attached AFTER the reference list and may only be used for
illustrative purposes as this will NOT form part of the marking scope for the
    written assignment.
    •
Write in full-sentenced, normal paragraph format
throughout the essay. Do not use bullets, numbers, lists, or tables in the body
    of your essay.
    ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE:
    PREPARING TO WRITE
    Essay reading
    •
In order to answer the essay question, read the
available articles, textbook chapter/section related to the topic and tasks of
    this assignment
    •
Selected articles have been provided along with
the course outline which you should use to initiate, present and consolidate
your argument. You do not need to use more than these but may if you wish.
    •
A minimum of FIVE academic sources are to be
consulted for this essay (This includes your textbook which may be ONE of these
    four sources).
    •
You may use more than five sources ONLY if it is
well-integrated = evidence of reading and understanding it, not just one
citation to increase references (inflated referencing)
    •
You may include other journal articles. This
must be drawn from published peer-reviewed journals available through the
university library portal or online academic sources such as Google Scholar, African
Journals Online (AJOL), HSRC (www.hsrc.ac.za), MRC (www.mrc.ac.za), NRF
(www.nrf.ac.za), Child Guage, or other such recognised academic and
research-based publications in the relevant area of Psychology (E.G. Science

  • The Complexities and Contexts of Stalking: A Critical Evaluation of Mullen et al’s Taxonomy and the Associated Risks and Impact

Critically evaluate and answer the question. APA referencing should be used.
Stalking behaviour is a complex course of conduct, the risks associated with it are best understood by examining the different contexts in which it might occur. Discuss with reference to Mullen et al’s taxonomy.
    Instructions:
    • Definition of stalking, and the criminal offence
    • Describe risks and impact
    • Introduce the Mullen’s 5 stalking types and prevalence
    • Discuss varied risk types and levels associated with each
    • Be critical in your treatment, Mullen’s is not the only typology, this paper has a good overview of other approaches, and you will find references to primary sources that will be helpful

  • Title: “Understanding Dyslexia: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers” “Supporting the Information in a Pamphlet on Specific Learning Disabilities: A Research-Based Approach”

    Your task is to
prepare the wording for a pamphlet that summarises the key points of ONE
Specific Learning Difference (SLD). Choose one of the Specific
Learning Differences (SLDs) that we have covered in class (e.g. Autism,
ADHD or Dyslexia). You will also be required to create a support document
that explains the academic research that evidences and supports the information
that you have included in your pamphlet.
    Word
count – 2000 words in total
Guide – 300-500 words for the pamphlet
and 1500-1700 words for the Support Document
    You will be
required to develop the wording for a pamphlet/online factsheet. A pamphlet is
similar to a leaflet – a short booklet of information. You DO NOT need to
prepare the graphics or layout, just the wording.
    You must decide
on who your target audience is. Your target audience can be either
    ·
    Parents/carers of children
    with a diagnosed SLD
    ·
    Teachers – who have
children with diagnosed SLDs in their classes or
    ·
    Volunteers/Employees/Professionals – who work
with children e.g. counsellor, holiday activity leader, lifeguard,
youth-worker, religious leader, retail assistant in children’s clothing/toys
    etc.
    Make it clear
in your pamphlet title and your support document who the target audience is. In
the support document, briefly explain how the communication may need to
be adapted to that particular audience. For example, for a lifeguard, you may
want to focus on the differences they might encounter in their role e.g. motor
skills, processing verbal instructions. You are also welcome to target a
particular area/population/culture who might benefit from a particular approach
in communications – again, be clear about your choice and briefly state the
reasons for your choice in the support document.
    Guidelines
    for developing your Pamphlet (300-500
    words)
    Your aim here
is to communicate clearly with your target audience. Your audience is unlikely
to understand the academic language used in academic textbooks and in the
research. Your job is to communicate the important points in a clear and easy
way, that the layperson can understand. Readers with a relatively low
educational achievement and no knowledge of psychological terms should be able
to understand your pamphlet easily. This is an important skill that graduate
    employers are particularly interested in.
    Some points to
    consider
    Ø
Who is the target population – age,
culture, ethnicity, religion etc? And how is this relevant e.g. if you have
chosen a particular culture as your target audience, are there cultural
differences in how they understand and respond to learning differences in
children? (This information may change the tone and words that you include and
which aspects of the SLD you emphasise in the pamphlet.).
    o
    Do they need this information?
    o
    Why is it important?
    o
BEWARE! Do not focus on explaining the
features of your chosen audience (max 150 words). Your focus should always be
    on explaining the SLD
    Ø
    What subsections/subheadings
will you use in your pamphlet?
o   What is the key information that your target
    population needs to know?
    o
    Can you
categorise these into subheadings e.g. ‘What caused my child’s autism?’
(genetic v environmental causes) or ‘how can I best help my child?’
    (interventions)
    o
    For example, a
teacher may need information specifically around how to support a child with
this SLD to engage in academic learning e.g. learning to read. Whereas a parent/carer
might need more information about behavioural interventions that can support
    their child at home.
    Ø
What is the rationale for what you
have included? What research supports the choices you have made?
    Ø
How can I make the information easy to
    read?
    Ø
Keep the information up to date – e.g.
    use recent research/data.
    Ø
Present the facts based on the most
    current research
    o
    Avoid scare-mongering
    o
Avoid preaching – target your message
    to your audience
    o
Avoid giving false hope or misleading
    information
    Ø
The pamphlet does not need to include citations
    – unless you are addressing an audience that you think would be particularly
concerned that the pamphlet was research-based. Citations should be included in
the support document with a full reference section on a separate page at the
end of the document, entitled References.
Guidelines for writing-up your Support Document (1500 words)
This document should provide the academic
support for the information that you have included in your pamphlet. In
contrast to the pamphlet, this document should be written in an academic style
and should be written in the third person. It should explain why you have
included the information that you have selected to include, and it should explain
and cite the theory and research that supports your selection. It is also
appropriate to explain why some research/theories have been omitted, for
example if they are unhelpful in this context, or they have been refuted by
more current research.  This provides you
with an opportunity to critically evaluate the research – and you are
encouraged to do so to earn the highest marks.
Structure your support document using the
same sections/subheadings as your pamphlet, and in the same order, so it is
clear how each section of your pamphlet is evidenced and supported by research
and theory. For example, if the first section/subheading in your pamphlet is
“What is Autism?”, start your support document with the same subheading and
explain what autism is in more detail, citing the sources for your explanation.
    Overall, you may wish to
    consider the following structure
    Introduction: SLD and target audience
    (300 words approx.)
    a.    Define and describe the SLD, citing your sources (e.g. DSM, ICD)
    b.    Explain who the target audience is
    i.      Briefly explain why your target audience needs information on the SLD and
if they need this information presented in a particular way or with particular
attention to certain aspects of the SLD
ii.    Explain the key information your target audience needs and briefly
    explain why
Use the same subheadings in your support
document as the subheadings/subsections that you have used in your
pamphlet (1000 words). Cite and explain the research that evidences the
information that you have included in each subheading.
    Conclusion (150 words approx.)
    a.    Key points of your write-up
    b.    Why your pamphlet will work to address your target audience
    4.    References (APA) – the support document MUST include citations (to avoid
plagiarism) and must be accompanied by a full reference section on a separate
page at the end of the document, entitled ‘References’. In-text citations and
the accompanying full references at the end, should be in the most current APA
    format.

  • Hypothesis Testing for Research Project Variables

In Week 3, we used crosstabs to determine if a potential relationship between two variables is worth examining further. During Week 4, we studied tests of significance. In this week’s discussion, students will apply these tests of significance to their project variables. As we discussed previously, the level of measurement of our variables determine which test of significance works for the research project.
    Complete the following steps:
Post a brief explanation of your topic. Include your research question. Next, begin your 5 steps of hypothesis testing by stating your research and null hypotheses. State your alpha level is .05.
Run a test of significance on your variables (based on the level of measurement). Copy and paste the appropriate table into the window.
Identify the two-tailed p value and explain your findings. Is p

  • “Multicultural Competence in Psychology: Analyzing a Simulated Case Study of a Cultural Conflict” Multicultural Competency in Psychology: A Case Study Analysis

Create a PowerPoint presentation (minimum 6 slides) that analyzes a simulated case study of a multicultural conflict that could potentially occur within your psychology specialization. After analyzing one’s multifaceted cultural identity and biases, the next step toward multicultural competency is to plan how you can use best practices to minimize the negative impact of these factors on professional relationships.
Multicultural competence is essential to be an equitable and effective psychologist; therefore, both working practitioners and learners require professional development in this area. The case study, which is an in-depth report and analysis of events, activities, or processes involving one or more individuals or a situation, is an important tool for training as it allows us to analyze real-life professional concerns without doing harm to the people who service our services.
Working psychologists continue to consult with colleagues on case studies to improve their professional competencies. While actual case studies are based on factual reports, simulated (or fictional) case studies, or vignettes, are often used to illustrate situations that could occur in practice and evaluate potential courses of action. A PowerPoint presentation can be an effective means of sharing case study details and lessons learned in a professional context.
To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community.
What are some common cultural conflicts that occur in the workplace?
How might cultural differences contribute to conflicts?
How might a person’s biases impact cultural conflict and potential solutions?
What are some productive ways that cultural conflicts can be resolved?
    Preparation
Note: The assessments in this course build upon each other, so you are strongly encouraged to complete them in sequence.
