  • Title: Understanding Motivation Orientation: Conceptual Foundations and Practical Applications in Leadership

    Overview
As you are learning, the motivations that underlie our behavior are unique to us. For example, we may engage in behavior as a result of social expectations and obligations. Yet, when we are driven to engage in behavior that is not self-directed, the extrinsic pressure to adhere to rules and norms could cause intrapersonal conflict. By contrast, we may engage in behavior as a result of our curiosities, interests, or values. When we are driven to engage in behavior that is self-directed, we feel an intrinsic drive to complete tasks and pursue goals based on our own volition and free will. For these reasons, it is important to answer the question: Why does intrinsic motivation matter?
For this milestone, you will reflect on the conceptual foundations and practical applications of motivation orientation. Specifically, you will analyze the impacts of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards and how being aware of a person’s motivation orientation can promote effective leadership.
    Prompt

Describe the strengths and limitations of an autonomously motivated mindset as it applies to emotional intelligence.

Describe how you could support others in their own motivation.

    Case Five
Kelly is a 22-year-old woman from a strong Irish-Catholic background. She comes into therapy upon the ultimatum of her new husband because of her impulsivity, spending money and obsession with the home shopping channel, which she watches all night.  Kelly says, “since we got married he is such a pinch penny. He used to be my ‘partner in crime’. Life was exciting and spontaneous. Now he wants to settle down and have a family. How boring is that! I’m a free spirit and love living on the edge. Who has time to sleep! I love to party, I love to run on a whim and I love to shop!  Oh, and let me tell you about the awesome deal I just got. I have this special ability to be in the right place at the right time.  Did you know that tomorrow there are half-off sales at the mall and by the way, I just love the thrill of being the first one at the door when the store opens.” During the interview, Kelly appears relaxed but keeps shifting her position in her chair. When you ask her if she has ever been depressed, she tells you, “sometimes the world seems dark and heavy and did you know that your picture frames are crooked?”  She denies suicidal ideation, but admits to not wanting to get out of bed some mornings, until an idea strikes her and she’s “off and running again”.
Using the text information from Chapters 12 through 16:
In consideration of the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar and related disorders, how might you assess Kelly?
What would you target in treatment?
What form(s) from the text might you utilize in your work with Kelly as a therapeutic intervention?
How might her responses be used to initiate change?
    Case Six
Lorena is a 35-year-old woman who self-identifies as lesbian. Lorena comes for treatment to, “fix my relationship”.  She tells you that her partner has threatened to leave her if, “I don’t grow up and get a job”.  She says that she doesn’t feel that she should have to work, that, “If she truly loved me, she’d let me hang out all day while I figure out what I want to do.  People should like what they do and not just work to collect a paycheck. As a kid, I watched my mom break her back while my dad sat home and drank all day. Mom would come home after working 12 hours and he’d push her around because dinner wasn’t on the table. I swore I’d never be like my mother!”  Although Lorena denies suicidal ideation, you notice some superficial scarring on her wrist, which she insists was an “adolescent thing that helped me cope with life back then.”  You also notice bruises on her upper arms. “Oh, that is from my partner. She got me so ticked off I swung at her and she had the nerve to grab me and toss me against the wall.”  Lorena insists that it is never her fault when they fight and that her partner always starts it. She claims to love her partner no matter what she says or does and that she herself can’t stand the thought of being alone.
Using the text information from Chapters 12 through 16:
In consideration of the diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders, how might you assess Lorena?
What would you target in treatment?
What form(s) from the text might you utilize in your work with Lorena as a therapeutic intervention?
How might her responses be used to initiate change?
    Activity Outcomes
Consider factors relevant to culture and human diversity.
Discuss legal/ethical issues and contraindications of theory and technique.

In this module, you will begin to explore the psychological study of personality. As you begin this course, you likely have a lot of thoughts and reflections about your own personality and the personality of others. Before we dig into the work of prominent theorists, let’s begin by creating a theory of personality.
For your initial post, create your own theory of personality. By theory, we mean a set of interrelated principles based on your observations and experiences. The questions provided below will help you shape your answer. Your theory should be about 6 to 12 sentences and include examples or observations about yourself or others to back up your assertions. Address the following questions in your theory:
    How can you observe personality?
Does nature or nurture play a larger role in personality development? Justify your response.
What is the value of studying personality in yourself and others?
Is personality changeable? Does it shift over time? Does it depend on the situation?
Next, describe how studying personality connects to one of the following programmatic themes:
    Self-care
    Social justice
    Emotional intelligence
    Career connections
    Ethics

  • “Exploring Identity and the Social Ecosystem: How Relationships and Groups Shape Who We Are”

In this module, you are exploring the concept of identity, self, and groups. Through this exploration, you learn that we are all a part of a social ecosystem that represents our relationships and the groups we belong to. In fact, the thoughts, feelings, and choices that result from your relationships with different people and groups help to define your identity.
First, title your post “Identity and Self.”
For your initial post, review the videos Role Strain Versus Role Conflict and Deviance: Crash Course Sociology #18. Then respond to the following:
What are the various levels of your social ecosystem? In what ways have they changed in the past 5 or 10 years?
If something has changed within your social ecosystem, was it intentional? Or did your social ecosystem change you?
How have your relationships with specific aspects of your social ecosystem helped to shape your identity?
Do you think people act more based on who they are or based on their group’s behavior? Please provide a specific example to support your position.
How does the concept of identity and the group apply to any of the following programmatic course themes:
    Self-care
    Social justice
    Emotional intelligence
    Career connections
    Ethics

  • The Power of Forgiveness: Understanding and Utilizing the FREE Model The FREE model, also known as the Four-Phase Forgiveness Model, is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals forgive those who have wronged them. It was developed by psychologists

In Chapter 21 of the Ripley & Worthington textbook, the FREE model is discussed. Briefly explain the FREE model in your thread and describe at least 1 aspect of the model that you appreciate and why. You may or may not decide to use outside sources to support your argument.
In your reply, select 1 of the 7 FREE interventions (21-1 thru 21-7, pp 288–306) that you feel is powerful. Explain why you feel this particular intervention is important and why. It would be wise to support this section with research. If you are wondering what might be good resources for this portion of the forum, look at the works of Robert Enright, Fred DiBlasio, or Fred Luskin, which all deal with forgiveness. Another potential resource is John Gottman’s work in After a Fight (5 step process in reconciliation) focusing on marriage issues.
