  • “Ethical Dilemma: The Importance of Philosophical Analysis in Life and Death Decisions” 1) In this situation, I would have consulted with the hospital’s ethics committee to make a decision. The tattoo itself may not be a legally binding “Engaging in Thoughtful Discussion: Responding to Course Materials”

In 2017 a real life took place in Miami, Florida that made it clear that philosophical analysis can have life and death consequences. Doctors at a Miami hospital were faced with an ethical dilemma when a 70-year-old unconscious patient arrived in their emergency room with the words “Do Not Resuscitate” tattooed across his chest. The word “not” was underlined and the tattoo included a signature. The patient’s health was quickly declining and doctors needed to determine whether they were morally obligated to resuscitate the man or heed the apparent wishes expressed through his tattoo. Florida law requires printed do-not-resuscitate orders but doctors often consult with patients and patients’ family and friends to make end-of-life decisions such as these. In this case the unconscious man entered the hospital without the relevant paperwork and no family or friends to speak to. Thus doctors were faced with contemplating whether or not the tattoo was an accurate representation of the patient’s actual wishes.

The “nature-nurture” debate has existed for many years. Contemporary psychologists emphasize the ways in which “nature” and “nurture” are intertwined, with each making a contribution to who we are and what we do. Current research also focuses on how “nature” and “nurture” interact, such that our genes, our experiences, and/or environments can influence each other. Consider one of your own abilities or traits (e.g., a personality trait, a physical characteristic, or a talent). What roles have “nature” and “nurture” played in producing your trait or ability? In what ways is your trait or ability the product of an interaction between “nature” and “nurture”?
In a multi-paragraph essay, describe your chosen ability or trait and discuss how “nature” and “nurture” might interact to produce this characteristic.
Include details from class materials, readings, and research to support your discussion.
