  • Title: Enhancing Critical Thinking through Discussion: Principles and Techniques

    Instructions
First, read the Svinicki & McKeachie chapter 5 thoroughly and search for underlying principles for teaching thought using discussion.
Make a list of critical thinking components that can be utilized in a good discussion. For instance, you could say:
Discussion can explore concepts that don’t have obvious answers
Discussion can focus on relationships—between ideas, cause/effect, etc.
Discussion can focus on “best” vs. “better”—“what is the best solution?”—note that this is an example of evaluation from Bloom’s taxonomy
    Discussion can examine underlying beliefs
Add 4-5 general concepts to this list that you have drawn from the Svinicki & McKeachie chapter. Explain each of these concepts and the depth of thought possible given these underlying principles. Make sure to expressly indicate what from chapter five led to the underlying principle you proposed in your list and cite correctly per APA.
Review the techniques of discussion reviewed in Svinicki & McKeachie (starting with a controversy, starting with questions, examining cases, etc.) and explain how several of these techniques can drive thought deeper.
Project to your own teaching demonstration that you will present in week 7. For your particular topic, how do you think a well-developed discussion can implement HOTS related to your topic? Draw from Svinicki & McKeachie and cite appropriately.

    Discussion Assignment: Spider and Egg
You will notice the photograph of a spider and egg sac. Imagine that you are a psychotherapist working from a Freudian approach (psychodynamic). Your patient says to you, “I had a dream last night where I was in the store, and I saw this decoration. I felt anxious and ran out of the store. Then I work up.” The client draws a picture that looks just like the image. How would you explore the significance of the dream image? Allowing for some stereotyping of the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic approach, what is the meaning of this image?
Please write a 4 to 5-sentence response due May 31st.

  • Title: The Importance and Complexity of Reasoning as a Higher-Order Cognitive Function

Metacognition is loosely defined as “thinking about thinking.” Cognition as a whole is also a very complex process. Cognition is somewhat of an umbrella term that includes all mental functions performed with our mind. It is what makes us different than other species. Certainly, other species have senses. They perceive things in the environment, and they have memory that enables them to survive. Some species even demonstrate some limited complex higher-order functions such as reasoning and problem-solving.
However, humans are unique in that they can use each lower-order cognitive function by itself to sense something, to perceive something, or to remember something. No other species can use and manipulate the basic cognitive functions performed everyday and combine them to think. When humans think, they combine and use a number of lower-order functions in order to successfully employ higher-order functions that allow them to survive, adapt, and even outthink other species and change our environment.
For this discussion, look at the topics we covered throughout the term, select one higher-order function (reasoning, problem-solving, decision-making, etc.), and think about that higher-order function. Then, submit a discussion post that includes the following:
The name of your selection (higher-order cognitive function: reasoning, problem-solving, etc.)
Why you believe it is most important compared to the rest of the higher-order functions we have discussed
An explanation/description of what occurs when the selected higher-order function is performed
An example of someone performing the function (solving a problem, reasoning, etc.) (It can be aviation-related but does not need to be.)
A discussion about the complexity of this selected function.
Please respond to this discussion with your initial post by the fourth day of the module week so that your fellow students have the opportunity to read and respond to your post as needed. Provide at least 2 (two) reputable scholarly sources to support your position.
