Discussion: Research in Psychology
Analyzing Research
Step 1: Visit the Public Library of Science (PLOS One) website: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/browse/psychology (a peer-reviewed journal that freely publishes research articles with open licenses). Do a search for an article that interests you, then answer the following:
What is the hyperlink to the study you chose?
What is the title of the study, and who conducted the research?
Describe the study in a few sentences in your own words.
Identify and describe either the basic assumption of the researchers, or if it was an experiment, the hypothesis. Why were they conducting this research?
How was the study performed? What methods were used?
What were the results and conclusions of this study?
What questions do you still have after reading about this study? For example, if you were to conduct another study based off of this study, what questions would you ask and what would you still want to find out?

“Ethical Dilemmas for Clinical and Counseling Psychologists in the Digital Age: Analysis and Recommendations for Dr. Arnold and Dr. Washington”
For this discussion, you will examine ethical issues encountered by clinical and counseling psychologists in the digital age. Begin by reviewing the cases of Dr. Arnold and Dr. Washington listed below and selecting one of these ethical dilemmas for analysis.
Case 1
Dr. Arnold is a clinical psychologist who specializes in child and adolescent issues. From time to time, she provides consultation on high lethality cases within the juvenile court system. Recently, she was referred a case involving a 15-year-old male who has a history of aggression, angry outburst, destructive behavior, and cyberstalking. Concerned for her safety and well-being, Dr. Arnold input the client’s name into a search engine, which yielded the client’s social network page. Dr. Arnold is uncertain whether or not to look at the client’s social network page.
Case 2
Dr. Washington is a counseling psychologist who specializes in trauma and self-harming behavior. Recently, he received a “friend request” from a former client who he provided individual therapy to six months ago. Dr. Washington opted not to accept the “friend request,” but considered sending a private message to the client with the social networking policy from his informed consent. Dr. Washington is uncertain whether or not to send the private message to the client.
In your initial post, assume the role of a colleague to the doctor named and analyze the ethical issues encountered in your chosen case. Given the situation described in the case study, recommend how your colleague should proceed. Provide support for your response by citing the required articles for this discussion. Consider the current and potential actions of your colleague and explain whether or not he or she is currently, or potentially will be, in violation of the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. Provide support for your explanation by citing Standard 3: Human Relations https://www.apa.org/ethics/code/index?item=6 in the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. Explain how your colleague might avoid this type of ethical dilemma in the future. Describe what policy or policies you might put in place if you were your colleague. -

The grades.jasp file is a sample data set. The data represent a teacher’s recording of student demographics and performance on quizzes and a final exam across three sections of the course. This data file is used in all four papers (Week 2, Week 4, Week 6, and Week 8).
This week’s assignment is on correlations. You will analyze the following variables in the grades.jasp data set:
Variable Definition
Quiz1 Quiz 1: number of correct answers
GPA Previous grade point average
Total Total number of points earned in class
Final Final exam: number of correct answers
Step 1: Write Section 1 of the DAA: The Data Analysis Plan
Name the four variables used in this analysis and whether they are categorical or continuous.
State a research question, null hypothesis, and alternate hypothesis for total and final.
State a research question, null hypothesis, and alternate hypothesis for gpa and quiz1.
Step 2: Write Section 2 of the DAA: Testing Assumptions
Test for one of the assumptions of correlation – normality.
Create a descriptive statistics table in statistical software to assess normality. This table should include the four variables named above, including skew and kurtosis for each variable.
Paste the table in the DAA Template.
Interpret the skewness and kurtosis values and determine whether the assumption of normality was violated or not violated.
Step 3: Write Section 3 of the DAA: Results and Interpretation
Using the statistical software, paste the intercorrelation matrix for the four variables into the document.
Below the output, first report the total-final correlation including degrees of freedom, correlation coefficient, and p value. Specify whether or not to reject the null hypothesis for this correlation.
Second, report the gpa-quiz1 correlation including degrees of freedom, correlation coefficient, and p value. Specify whether or not to reject the null hypothesis for this correlation.
Step 4: Write Section 4 of the DAA: Statistical Conclusions
Provide a brief summary of your analysis and the conclusions drawn about correlations.
Analyze the limitations of the statistical test and/or possible alternative explanations for your results.
Step 5: Write Section 5 of the DAA: Application
Analyze how you might use correlations in your field of study.
Name two variables that would work for such an analysis and why studying the relationship may be important to the field or practice.
Submit your DAA template as an attached Word document in the assignment area.

Navigating Multiple Role Relationship Conflicts in Research on Astrology Beliefs and Personality Traits: Strategies for Ethical Conduct
In the realm of psychology research focusing on astrology beliefs and personality traits, a multi-faceted relationship conflict may emerge when the researcher occupies the dual roles of a researcher and a practitioner of astrology. This intricate conflict can present ethical challenges and biases that have the potential to compromise the validity and reliability of the research findings. To effectively navigate this conflict in advance, it is imperative for researchers to proactively establish firm boundaries between their roles, ensuring clarity and transparency in their communication with all stakeholders involved. By openly disclosing their involvement in both research and astrological practices, researchers can foster trust and maintain the integrity of the study. Furthermore, a crucial strategy involves maintaining a strict separation between their roles as a researcher and an astrologer, refraining from intertwining their personal astrological services with the research process to prevent any undue influence on participants or outcomes. In cases where the researcher’s astrological expertise is integral to the study, engaging an independent third-party for verification can serve as a safeguard against bias and bolster the scientific rigor of the research. Seeking ethical review and oversight from institutional bodies can provide invaluable guidance on navigating complex ethical dilemmas and safeguarding the rights and well-being of research participants. Continuous self-reflection on personal motives, biases, and actions, coupled with ongoing professional development in research ethics and conflict resolution, can equip researchers with the necessary tools to uphold ethical standards and ensure the credibility of their work in exploring the intersection of astrology beliefs and personality traits. By conscientiously implementing these comprehensive strategies, researchers can effectively address and mitigate the challenges posed by multiple role relationship conflicts in their research endeavors.

Interplay of Social and Psychological Factors in a Post-Explosion Disaster and the Role of Recovery Teams
Respond to a peer’s post. Here is the orginal topic: For this assignment, consider that a large explosion has occurred in an urban area encompassing commercial and residential buildings and a transit hub. Casualties are light given the densely populated area, but after 24 hours the authorities have still not concluded the cause of the explosion. Failure of infrastructure and a terrorist attack are significant possibilities, but uncertainty is high and rumors persist. In your post describe how social and psychological factors interrelate with this disaster and its victims and how recovery teams might help the population cope.

Title: Understanding Trauma and Attachment in Rabbit Hole: A Reaction Paper
The purpose of the reaction papers (indeed, all your written assignments) is for you to demonstrate that you understand and can apply the concepts we are learning about in this class. I am looking for you to find specific examples of topics covered in the book/film and how and why they illustrate a particular concept. I am NOT looking for a detailed retelling of the story; rather pick and choose scenes and characters’ behaviors that are relevant to the topics covered in the syllabus. For example, given that we’ve covered the role of disorganized attachment as a type of trauma and understand it as a precursor to pathological dissociation, you might illustrate this process at work in a character. Or you might talk about a particular character’s resilience to trauma and explain the underlying psychological processes. You could talk about different types of trauma and why they impact a character in the way that they do. Another option might be to discuss the difference between the DSM’s view of PTSD and Van der Kolk’s idea of “developmental trauma”. There are numerous other concepts that you might discuss and you might choose to address biological and social issues as they impact a character as well.
These are just a few examples. Two or three of these concepts, as well as an awareness of the bio/psycho/social model underlying this course, will put you in the ballpark of an A.
I am also, however, looking for clear writing with correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. If you have trouble with this, you can go to The Writing Center for help. Proofread your work.
Finally, there is room for your original creative response and emotional reactions to the film/book and students often relate a film or book to their own experience or help me see something familiar in a novel way. But this should be in addition to, not instead of, your ability to demonstrate that you are keeping up with the reading and grasping major concepts and theories. Since we don’t have any exams in this class, your written work is an important way for me to evaluate your progress.
Papers should be about three pages, double spaced, 12 point font, with APA style citations in the body of the paper and an APA style reference page at the end. APA style beyond this is not required for the reaction paper, but full APA style is required for your final research papers.
You always have the option of re-doing an assignment for a higher grade or picking an additional book or film for extra credit.
If you are still unclear as to how to proceed, please get in touch with me and we can speak individually.
You’re using the exact same sources you used for the paper on Precious . Would have been better use something else. Also – why are you’re references for Hagman in caps? And again, the you cite an author you have to put the year of the publication in parentheses after their name and the complete reference In your reference section.
I would have liked to see a more in depth understanding of how attachment theory relates to the characters in Rabbit Hole, as well as bringing in others we have studied, like Judith Herman Trauma and dissociation or Van der Kolk. -

Title: Understanding Crisis Counseling and the Role of the Crisis Counselor: Exploring Essential Values in Responding to Mental Health Crises
Introduction to Discussion:
This module acts as an introduction to crisis theory, types of crises, and to explore ten essential values in responding to mental health crisis. It important to understand that one theory on it’s own may not be sufficient in addressing crisis. There is a general consensus within the literature that there are several beneficial theories that can be of utility when considering crisis intervention, assessment, and treatment. Please read the assigned readings for this week before completing this week’s discussion assignment.
Instructions:
Please read the following quotes and respond to the question prompt.
Question prompts:
1.) “In general counseling, no theory explains all counseling problems and required approaches. The same is true for crisis counseling: no one theory explains the phenomenon of crisis adequately. Therefore, the counselor needs to be flexible in drawing upon and applying crisis theory in the same way a counselor would need to be when practicing counseling in general.” (Miller, 2011, p. 15).
How do does this quote influence your perception of crisis counseling and the role of the crisis counselor?
2.) We can see the counselor as someone who may “help the client see through the fears of the crisis and feel safe enough in counseling to make the best life-enhancing decisions possible”. (Miller, 2011, p. 2). In this way, “the counselor is metaphorically acting as a lighthouse for the client…” (Miller, 2011, p. 2).
How might you apply the Practice Guidelines: Core Elements in Responding to a Mental Health Crises Download Practice Guidelines: Core Elements in Responding to a Mental Health Crisesspecifically the Ten Essential Values (pages 5-12) to assist you, as the crisis counselor, in metaphorically acting as a lighthouse for the client? -
