In October 2021, Natalie Simmons was fatally stabbed by Quincey Rawlings at an assisted living facility in Richmond, Tiffanie’s Manor, where both were residents with mental health conditions. According to Virginia Health Information (n.d.), Tiffanie’s Manor is a residential/assisted living facility working with mentally challenged, schizophrenia, bipolar and several other mental disorders. (Virginia Health Information, n.d). Rawlings, found unable to stand trial due to his mental illness, had his charges dropped in March 2024. Although legally justified, this decision left Simmons’s family feeling a lack of justice and emphasized the complexities and limitations of handling such cases within the legal system (CBS 6, 2024).
Socio-economic status significantly influenced this case, as both the victim and the perpetrator resided in a facility that caters to individuals with limited resources and mental health issues. This setting emphasizes the intersection of socio-economic factors and mental health, showing how these aspects can affect access to justice and appropriate care. Additionally, mental illness itself is an essential aspect of diversity that complicates legal proceedings and societal perceptions of justice (CBS 6, 2024).
As forensic psychology professionals, we will play an essential role in promoting diversity and reducing bias. We will be called upon to educate legal professionals about mental health conditions to reduce stigmas and ensure informed legal decisions are made. Conducting thorough competency evaluations can help ensure that defendants’ mental health conditions are accurately assessed, influencing appropriate legal outcomes (American Psychological Association, 2020).
I can promote positive social change by advocating for policy reforms that address the needs of mentally ill defendants and by developing support systems for victims’ families. This could help navigate the emotional and legal complexities of such cases, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and equitable legal system (American Psychological Association, 2020). Working in a psychiatric hospital, I have both witnessed and been a victim of various assaults. Even in the cases when charges are pressed against a patient, their mental health history is looked at, and, ultimately, it becomes a “choose your battle” situation. We have to find a more supportive way to intervene with those working in the field and those affected by such crimes as the Simmons family had to endure.

If Tony came seeking professional mental healthcare services, the two assessments I would use are similar to Dr. Melfi’s approach. I would use the BDI-II tool to examine the severity of depression symptoms. The BDI-II is a (Krzikalla et al., 2023). Also, I would use the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) scale to examine the severity of his anxiety. Casares et al. (2024) claim that GAD-7 is a brief, reliable, and easy-to-use tool for assessing the severity of self-reported anxiety symptoms. The purpose of using the GAD-7 and BDI-II is to examine the severity of anxiety and depression, respectively. This would aid in screening, diagnosing, and examining the severity of the anxiety and depression disorders for effective intervention. This would enable me to give him a better diagnosis of mental healthcare disorders. Monterrosa-Velescu et al. (2024) argue that GAD-7 uses a 7-item scale to assess psychometric properties and generalized anxiety disorder. I would eventually put Tony under Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and recommend coping strategies such as meditation and physical activities like bicycle racing.

The focus of this paper is psychological disorders. Your paper must include the following: 
Character: Pick a character from a movie or book that you believe or could argue has a psychological disorder (or close to) and diagnose him/her. Provide a detailed description of the character and their cognitive, personality, emotional and/or behavioral patterns that form the basis from which your diagnosis is made. (While you can address the issue of comorbidity, you do not have to.)
You must research the DSM-V Diagnostic Criteria for the disorder you are dealing with and while I do not expect y’all to follow the diagnostic criteria perfectly, you are required to consider how a diagnosis is professionally made for the disorder and therefore make mention of how your character does or does not qualify for the diagnosis according to the standards set forth by the DSM. Include strong reasoning as to how your diagnosis is valid/warranted.
Patterns of behaviors, thoughts, and emotions are deemed abnormal or pathological based on four reasons: deviance, dysfunction, distress, and danger.  Make reference to the role of at least two of these in your diagnosis, your claim of abnormality/pathology. If you choose deviance, consider the importance of context (cultural, social, developmental, etc.) in making a diagnosis. In other words, speak to this idea that “something is only abnormal in light of what is normal.”
While this is supposed to be a fun assignment, please keep in mind the power of a diagnosis/label and the care and responsibility that must always be taken when diagnosing. Things to consider in regard to this are issues such as the potential stigmatizing effects of a label and self- fulfilling prophecies.
Consider treatment. What is considered to be the most effective treatment for the disorder? If you were the psychologist, what treatment plan would you propose?
Tie in at least one other area of psychology we studied this semester (ex. Stress and Health Psychology, Biopsychology, The Brain, Behaviorism, Psychoanalysis, Social Psychology, etc).

Make sure you are pulling knowledge and learning from reputable sources (.edu and .gov are considered to be more reputable websites). You can research what public opinion/knowledge is and mention that, but this does not fulfill a source requirement. Your paper needs to be scholastically sound—your points need to make sense and be backed by research/evidence and reputable psychological knowledge/theory. Yes, you can include/pull from personal experience when writing this paper. However, personal experience cannot be your only source.
Use sources that support and strengthen what you are saying. Do not just randomly throw something in weakly to “fulfill a requirement,” because it will not do so.

We have been looking at different psychological theories and the way we can use them to better examine social media. For this assignment, you should choose yourself or another person (such as a celebrity or a politician). Spend some time looking through your/their social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Then write your analysis, being sure to cover these points:
