  • “Examining Ideology and the Role of Government: A Reflection on Contemporary Issues” EFO Model and the Role of the Federal Government EFO Model and the Role of the Federal Government: Exploring My Ideological Placement and Views

This essay covers material from throughout the class. Unlike the final, it is not timed, but is due BEFORE the deadline for the exam (since I need time to grade them). It should be around 2 pages (about 400-500 words), but you can go a little longer if you feel you need to. Feel free to use bullet points/numbering if it makes it easier, but be sure that you use complete sentences and proper grammar in your answer.
The goal of this assignment is for you to relate your values to what you learned in this class. Students will analyze the role of government in contemporary issues and demonstrate understanding of how political ideology shapes our views of the role of government.
You will not be graded on your ideology, but you will be graded on whether you can explain how your ideology (and your understanding of class material) relates to your views of government. This is the last assignment that I grade before submitting final grades, so be sure to do well, and answer all parts of the assignment. If you are borderline A/B or B/C, your grade on this can make the difference.
You may want to re-take the Ideology quiz, sinceLinks to an external site. you haven’t taken it in a while, but you can also just use your results from earlier in the semester.
You should only use the material from this class (such as the ideology lecture) to do the assignment, since outside sources often don’t explain the EFO model very well. However, if you use outside sources, be sure to cite them.
How much should the federal government do?
One of the big questions we’ve discussed in this class is the role of the federal government.  The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has brought this question to the forefront of American politics. Answer the following questions about ideology and the role of government.
After re-taking the EFO quiz and reviewing the ch1 module, explain the EFO model (remember to use the definitions from the lecture and cite slide #s; don’t use outside sources, since they often use the wrong definitions). What are the 4 ideologies and what do they believe? Be specific. (6 points; paragraph)
Insert a picture/screenshot of your placement on the EFO model in this assignment (Word is free for students and makes it easy to insert graphics into an essay; contact the helpdesk if you have difficulty with Word). You MUST include a screenshot of your placement or you will NOT get credit for this assignment. Reflect on your placement. What does it say about how much you care about Freedom, Order and Equality in general.  (6 points; short paragraph plus screenshot of your placement)
Review the ACA lecture from Public Policy (Economic & Domestic Policy) module. Explain one provision of the ACA from the lecture and explain why you favor or oppose government involvement in that. Be sure to cite the slide # of the lecture in your answer (3 points; short paragraph)
Does your placement on the EFO model fit your views on the federal government involvement in either healthcare, Covid or gas prices? Referring back to part 2, discuss your placement in the EFO model (what it means for Equality, Freedom and Order), and whether your views were consistent with your placement? Be specific (explain).  Note: It’s okay not to be consistent all the time (recall Emerson’s quote from the Courts lecture). (4 points; paragraph)*** (see note below)
Thinking back on Lasswell’s definition of Politics, what does Roesler mean when he says that there often isn’t a “right” answer in politics?  How does it relate to this discussion of “choices over conflicting values” as                 illustrated by the EFO model? (4 points; paragraph)
***note:  The point here is to reflect on your ideology and your response to the role of government. There’s no right answer here, but you do need to correctly relate your ideology with the role (or lack of role) you wish to see the government play in these issues. How much the government should do will depend on your priorities in the EFO model. You need to explain where you fit and how that relates to your view on the role of the federal government. However, if your placement on the EFO model doesn’t fit your answer in this   specific question, you should acknowledge that it doesn’t fit with the model. It’s okay to be inconsistent sometimes (you can invoke Emerson), but I want you to explain why you think it was inconsistent.
