Paper Topic 1
In his book Mightier Than The Sword, Rodger Streitmatter writes about the impact of the media on a) the women’s movement, b) the civil rights movement, and c) the political career of Boss Tweed/political corruption. Streitmatter suggests that the media are not neutral with regard to social movements or political events. Rather, he says, the media convey a particular stance on a movement or political figure through reporting, editorials and visual images/audio; this has important consequences for public opinion and for how the movements or political officials fare. In this essay, you should discuss the “positive” and “negative” impacts that the media had, according to Streitmatter, in TWO cases. So pick TWO out of the three assigned chapters to discuss. You should bring into your discussion SPECIFIC EXAMPLES of ways that Streitmatter says the media exerted influence or had an impact. In a final page, you should address a current social movement, such as Black Lives Matters or the environmental movement (you can choose another social movement if you like). Discuss how media coverage may be affecting that movement’s progress/public perception of the movement. You should base this on your reading of two newspaper articles on the social movement you choose. How might media coverage be helping or hurting this movement? Guidelines for writing the paper: Your paper should be 5-7 pages. You can write more and you will NOT be penalized for going longer. Papers should be double spaced with 1.25 inch margins on each side. Use a 12-point font, preferably Times New Roman, and DO A SPELL/GRAMMAR CHECK AND PROOFREAD!! Papers with excessive spelling and grammatical mistakes will be marked down. Please put your name on a cover page and NUMBER YOUR PAGES. When quoting from the Streitmatter book, simply put the author and page number after the quote, in the paper itself. For example: “Newspapers promoted the abolitionist cause.” (Streitmatter, p. 45). You do not need to use any sources besides the Streitmatter book and two newspaper articles.
So you only need to put two things in your bibliography on the last page: citations for the articles that you use to assess media coverage of a current social movement. You could take them from New York Times, or Washington Post, Washington Times, Florida Sun Sentinel, Miami Herald, etc. Any national newspaper is fine. The newspaper cite should have the author, title of article, name of newspaper, and date (Bob Higgins, “BLM holds rally in Miami,” Miami Herald, November 20, 2020).

PSCI 3183 International Law Policy Brief: Advocating for Change in [Country/Issue] Title: Citing Sources and Common Knowledge in International Treaties
PSCI 3183 International Law Policy Brief
Relevance of this assignment
This assignment will help you identify an area of international law where you think there should be change. It will help formulate your writing, analytical, and persuasive skills as you try to persuade someone to take action on the issue. You may even actually act upon the issue identified in the brief.
Overview
For this assignment, you will write a brief that advocates for a particular action in international law, and you will identify and try to persuade a specific actor to help with that action. You may choose any action you would like – the possibilities are endless. For example:
Ask a country to ratify a treaty that it has not ratified. It could be a human rights treaty, a nuclear non-proliferation treaty, etc.
Example: The United States should ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
Propose to sue a country for violating international law, specifying the court where the suit should happen.
Example: France should sue North Korea in the International Court of Justice for nuclear testing.
Ask a country to withdraw from a treaty
Example: Mexico should withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Propose to reform an international institution or law
Example: The United Nations Security Council should expand to include additional permanent members.
I recommend choosing a country/ issue that you are passionate about. If you would like help formulating a topic for the brief, please reach out to me.
Then, you will identify a relevant actor whom you would like to send this brief to, to try and persuade to help with the action. Though I strongly encourage you to actually send the brief to this actor, that is not required for the assignment. What matters it that you identified a relevant actor to try and persuade.
Example: I will send this brief to Senator John Hickenlooper of Colorado and ask him to bring the treaty to the United States Senate for ratification.
Directions:
The brief should be around 750 – 1000 words (3-4 double spaced pages of text). Type your answers in 12 point font, with double spaced formatting, 1” margins, and page numbers. Do not include a title page, but type your name and topic of the brief in the top left-hand corner of the assignment. Upload your paper as a file upload or text entry to the assignment on Canvas by 11:59pm on Thursday, May 30. Briefs turned in late will be docked a letter grade for each day late, beginning immediately after the due date and time.
Include a list of sources consulted on a separate page at the end of the document (this list does not count toward the word count). You do not need to include major treaties in this list of sources.
You may use subheadings to break up the text as you see fit.
Using and citing outside sources:
Use reputable news sources, academic journal articles, and secondary sources as information to help formulate and write this assignment. You may also use the textbook, being sure to cite it as you would cite an academic book. If you consult Wikipedia, use it to identify and consult the sources it cites (at the bottom of the Wikipedia entry). If you have a question about the credibility of a source, feel free to email **************************** or ask me in office hours.
You may consult sources of AI, but do so with extreme caution. You should not trust anything AI says, and you should verify its information through other means. If you directly quote AI or if you find information on AI that is not common knowledge, you must cite it.
In general, what information do you need to cite? You cite any information that a.) you quote word-for-word from the original source or b.) unique information that you find in an outside source that is not common knowledge.
You do not need to cite information that is considered common knowledge. A good rule of thumb is if the information appears in at least 5 general sources, it is probably common knowledge. See here Links to an external site.for more on common knowledge.
If you are directly quoting a source, use quotation marks around the relevant text and cite the source. Be cautious of this when referring to international treaties. In these situations, you probably don’t want to take up too much space quoting the entirety of a treaty passage. Feel free to use elipses (….) and hone in on the relevant words from the treaty.
Cite sources in parenthetical format. Example: Smith (2008) argues that international treaties are binding. Or: International treaties are binding (Smith 2008). You can use any style for the list of references (bibliography) that you would like, just be consistent. -
“Research Paper Requirements and Guidelines”
The rubric (how your paper will be graded) is to be based on 4 criteria
1 Thesis statement with solid introduction (5 points).
2. Plagiarism score higher than 25% (5 points)
3 Organization of thought so that the paper flows logically (20 points).
4 Grammar, spelling, length, use of solid academic research sources and overall meeting requirements of the paper (50 points).
5 Solid conclusion and summary of your major points (20 points).
Each student is required to turn in a short research paper during the semester. Failure to complete this assignment on time will result in the student not passing the course. The paper is to be a minimum of 4 double-spaced full pages. Only the content section of the paper will count toward meeting the length requirement. A title page and works cited page is not counted as a page. The paper is to have 1-inch margins and 12-point font. I will accept various formats.
A separate cover page (which does not count as a typewritten page) is to include the Title of the paper, your Name, Name of class and class section, Name of Instructor and. A work cited page is required.
********You must utilize at the very minimum 4 separate and distinct academic research sources. These sources must be shown in the body of the paper and directly shown in the back in the work cited page. I will accept various formats. These sources must not include the textbook, encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibles, or interviews. All major ideas and especially all statistics and quotations must have citations shown immediately after it in the body of the paper and shown in the work cited page. In addition, no large print, empty spaces or incorrect margins will be allowed. It is recommended that you check with the library (online or in person) for the various format sheets available in writing your research paper. You must send the paper as an attachment only
It is my philosophy that if you can’t write it, you don’t know it. Therefore grammar, style, and spelling will be considered in your final grade.
You must use source citations for all quotes, paraphrases, or borrowed ideas or facts.
If you choose a topic that interests you and that you want to write about, make sure you clear it with me first.
Do preliminary research to ensure that you have sufficient sources to support your paper. Legitimate internet sources are acceptable.
Every well-written paper should have at least three main parts. You should have an opening statement with a thesis (How to write a good thesis statement (Links to an external site.)) which addresses the question or issue you are researching. The body of the paper should present the evidence to support your thesis. If there is contradicting evidence from your sources, you should pay attention to that also. The paper should end with a well stated conclusion that either supports or refutes your thesis and explains why.
The paper should also discuss the effect or repercussion of the issue you are researching.
Just to repeat:
The following requirements against must be shown in your essay:
1. Minimum 4 full pages (Anything short of this will not be counted. Cover sheet and work cited page does not count into the 4 full page requirement)
2. Double-space and regular fonts. Any attempts to change the setting to meet the length requirements will not be accepted.
3. A mandatory separate cover sheet (title page) and a separate work cited page.
4. A minimum of 4 separate citations shown in the body of the paper which must be shown directly in the work cited page.
You should submit your file as a PDF in order to keep the format the same. Otherwise if you submit a word file, it risks changing your paper format (margins etc….) -
“The Universality of Human Rights: Examining the Foundations and Importance of Social, Economic, and Political Rights”
This paper is designed to provide you with the opportunity to refine your research, organizing, writing, and analytical skills. You are expected to address one of the following prompts. The 1000-word paper must include an exposition of the thoughts of at least three philosophers covered in the course and your thoughtful analysis.
Investigate the philosophical foundations of human rights, contrasting early “natural rights” theories with more modern interpretations. Evaluate the universality of human rights, particularly with respect to the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Are social and economic rights (articles 22-29) as vital as political rights (articles 3-21), and how do they contribute to a just and equitable society?
Political Theory Essay Guidelines
The theoretical issues, rather than empirical facts presented independently, are most important. Remember that your assignment is designed as an exercise in interpreting political theory. Emphasize the theoretical aspects of your answer. Empirical material such as historical details and statistical data should support your answer where appropriate. Still, aiming primarily to demonstrate your ability to argue coherently and effectively within well-defined theoretical frameworks would be best.
Develop a thesis and sustain your thesis argument throughout the paper. Each essay should be organized as a thesis emphasizing a conceptual idea rather than a summary of the texts or a general theme. Take a position, state clearly your position, and then mobilize textual references to convince your reader that you are right and have approached the question in a fair-minded and thoughtful manner. Essays not built on a thesis summarize the text and wander from point to point.
Define your terms. Political theorists should aim to define terms with great precision. Political theorists contribute to the study of politics by shedding new light on the conceptual dimensions of critical political problems. As soon as you introduce a term into your essay, you should define it very clearly.
Put your analytical voice at the forefront throughout the essay. Emphasize your informed argument. The political theory essay is never just a research report that collects quotations and strings them together; we want evidence that you have done the appropriate reading and are thinking independently and creatively about the text.
Always remember that the essay is an academic mode of discourse. Do not use the words, phrases, and arguments you would use in other contexts, such as e-mail, your journal, conversations with friends, journalistic articles, or an address to a political rally. In political theory writing, the more you strike a thoughtful and scholarly tone, the more your reader will trust your judgment.
Use the non-expert scholar figure as your target audience. Write your paper as if you will submit it to a professor who studies politics but is not an expert on the material you are dealing with. This will remind you to use any complicated terminology sparingly, define all key terms thoroughly, and avoid taking the meaning of complex debates and issues for granted.
You should meticulously edit your paper and eliminate spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
Attach a works cited/bibliography with every source you consulted while conducting your research and writing the paper. You may use APA or MLA format. You should include the political theory textbook and at least three additional academic references.
The paper must be submitted to Turnitin.com via Canvas by the due date; no email submissions will be accepted.
The paper is due on Sunday, May 19th, at 11:59 pm. Deadlines are meant to ensure that each student receives fair and equal treatment. No late papers will be accepted. -
