This research paper is the final graded instrument for POLS497. In a 1300-1800 word (5-7 page) paper, present a clear and focused argument in support of your proposed solution. An argument is more than merely your beliefs or opinions; your position must be based on key concepts, theory, logical reasoning, and supporting evidence. A successful persuasive argument will require that you (a) directly identify and describe the problem and explain why it is a problem for the political system of a primary case and (b) state and explain your solution clearly, acknowledging important assumptions or expectations you are making, and support your position that the solution you propose is appropriate.
Your paper must specifically reference and cite at least five (5) different credible and appropriate sources with at least three (3) “library” sources (those found using OneSearch) at least two of which are peer-reviewed, scholarly articles, and at least one of which is a news article published within the last year.
Credible and appropriate sources for this academic research project do NOT include textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias (including wikis), tourist-related documents, or similar secondary or tertiary sources intended to provide general knowledge for the public.
These sources may be consulted as general background information and to assist you in identifying appropriate and credible sources but will not count as part of the minimum five (5) cited sources.

1) Write a Short Essay (20%): The first step in this assignment is to write a
research paper (3-4 pages) about your topic. The purpose of this essay is to better
understand the complexity and nuance of your chosen issue, and to then make an
argument about what you think is taking place.
The quality of your research paper will depend on the quantity and quality of the
research you conduct, and you must use at least one academic research source (see
research handout for more information about conducting effective research).
However, it is not enough to simply share the information you have found, as you
must think about that information, and come to a conclusion about what you think
is happening with your current event. Your conclusion will then become the
argument that you make in your paper, and all of your research will become the
evidence you use to support your argument.
Your essay will be graded on the strength of your argument and on your ability to
use your research as evidence supporting it. 
2) Make a Meme (10%): Once you finish your essay (or when you’re closed to
being finished), the next step is to turn your research into a meme. Usually this
will involve the argument you are making, because you’re argument is the main
point you want to convey about your issue. But now, you need to think about how
you might convey that same point in a visual form.

You can select any preexisting meme image, but the text has to be original. And
the challenge is to figure out how to convey your argument about your current
event in one image and just a few short words.
While I will be the only one who reads your research paper, you will post your
meme to the class discussion boards, so that you can share your research with the
whole class. 
3) Make a Public Post (5%): Finally, when you post your meme, you also need to
include a short public write-up explaining the meme. This should be no longer
than one or two paragraphs, and it is your opportunity to provide a little bit more
information about your current event. Remember, your classmates will only see
your meme and not your research paper, so this is your chance to explain your
issue in a little more detail.  

For this assignment, you are to analyze an issue currently impacting our government through the lens of your particular group identity/identities (race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, religious group, etc.). You are encouraged to take an intersectional approach to examine this issue, that is, examining the issue from multiple intersections of your group identity (i.e., A queer Latinx first-generation college student, an African American woman who is a business owner, a man of color who has a student loan debt, a single parent who receives governmental assistance, etc.) Possible topics can include—legalization of marijuana, voting rights, criminal justice reform, affordable housing, gun control, immigration reform, student loan debt, LGBTQIA rights, gentrification, etc. The aforementioned list is just a sample list of topics. You are free to choose a topic from the list provided or select another topic not mentioned here. 
Your assignment should be factual, speak from your perspective, discuss how the issue impacts you or the group(s) you identify with, and be creative (i.e., skit, poster, social media post, song, PowerPoint, etc.) — the more creative, the better. A minimum of 7 sources are required. If you choose to present your issue as a video/audio, it needs to be at least 5 minutes long but no more than 7 minutes and should include a written works cited page(s) of the sources you used. If you choose to present your issue as a document, it needs to be at least 5 pages, but no more than 7 pages (not including a works cited page[s]). Finally, using the link below, you can either upload your assignment or provide a viewable link from a collaborative online site (i.e., Google Docs, Office 365, etc.).
