PLAGERISM REPORT IS NEEDED
Write an 8-10-page evaluation of key aspects of a population-based health concern, including your selection of members to form an interprofessional, collaborative coalition to achieve the stated goal.
Introduction:
Introduction
Resolving population health concerns requires the combined efforts of numerous agencies and individuals to address the Triple Aim of improving the patient experience, improving the health of populations, and reducing costs. This requires an interprofessional and collaborative effort to address the complex factors at the individual, organizational, community, and policy levels associated with the multiple factors affecting the health and well-being of our communities (Graffunder, Sakurada, & Nordisk, 2016).
As a scholar-practitioner in the field, you may be expected to develop and lead a diverse team of health care professionals, civic leaders, community stakeholders, constituents, community members, other interested parties, and city, state, and government agencies in addressing a wide range of issues affecting the health of diverse groups.
This assessment provides an opportunity for you to apply your leadership skills to form a collaborative, interprofessional coalition to address a population-based health concern from a nursing, public health, or health administration perspective.

“Enhancing Patient Safety Through Automated Medication Dispensing Cabinets: Strategies for Successful Implementation and Communication” Implementing Automatic Medication Dispensing Cabinets: Addressing Human Factors and Measuring Outcomes Examining the Impact of Automated Dispensing Cabinets on Medication Errors and Safety in Healthcare Organizations
Automated
Medication Dispensing Cabinets
In today’s fast-paced healthcare environment, patient
safety is a top priority. One way to enhance patient safety is through the
implementation of Automatic Medication Dispensing Cabinets (AMDCs). These
cabinets are designed to store and dispense medications in a secure and
controlled manner. They can be programmed to ensure that medications are
dispensed accurately and safely according to each patient’s prescription. These
cabinets provide a secure and efficient way to dispense medications to
patients, reducing the risks associated with human error and medication-related
incidents. However, careful planning and change management strategies are
required to successfully communicate the benefits, address human factors and
resistance to change, and implement measurable processes to assess the positive
impact of this new technology on patient care.
Safety
Contributions of AMDCs
The
issue at hand is the potential for medication errors to occur in healthcare
settings. Studies have shown that medication errors are a leading cause of
adverse events in hospitals, resulting in patient harm and sometimes even
death. Medication error is a
global healthcare concern because it has been associated with 5% to 6% of
hospital admissions and significant patient harm across the world (Alanzi, 2022).
These errors can occur at various stages of the medication process, including
prescribing, dispensing, and administration. Manual medication dispensing
processes are not foolproof and can be prone to errors such as incorrect dosage,
wrong medication, or missed doses. Therefore, there is a pressing need to
implement technological solutions that can improve the medication dispensing
process and enhance patient safety.
By
using automated technology, healthcare providers can reduce the risk of
medication errors, improve efficiency, and enhance patient safety (Alanzi,
2022). With the ability to track medication usage and generate reports, these
cabinets also provide valuable data for monitoring and quality improvement
purposes. The technology behind automatic medication dispensing cabinets is
sophisticated and offers several key features to support patient safety. These
cabinets are equipped with barcode scanning technology to verify medication
accuracy and patient identity. They are also integrated with electronic health
record systems to ensure that medications are dispensed based on the most
up-to-date information. Some cabinets even have built-in safety mechanisms,
such as alerts for potential drug interactions or allergies. Overall, this
technology streamlines the medication dispensing process and reduces the
likelihood of errors occurring. to measure outcomes.
Communication Of New Changes
Nursing
professionals are constantly required to adapt to technological changes
(Mansour, 2022). To effectively
communicate the new changes to the staff, a comprehensive communication
strategy should be implemented. Provide thorough training sessions to
familiarize the staff with the new technology and its benefits. Highlight the
importance of patient safety and how the automatic medication dispensing
cabinets contribute to that goal. Create user manuals and guidelines that
clearly explain how to use the automatic medication dispensing cabinets. Ensure
that the staff has access to these resources for reference. Establish open
lines of communication between the staff and the implementation team. Encourage
staff members to ask questions, provide feedback, report and address any issues
or concerns they may have. Send regular updates and reminders about the new
change through emails, staff meetings, or bulletin boards. Involve key stakeholders, such as nursing
leadership, pharmacy staff, and patient safety committees, in the planning and
decision-making process. Seek their input and address any concerns or feedback
(Mansour, 2022). Reinforce the importance of patient safety and the role of
automatic medication dispensing cabinets in achieving that goal. Encourage
staff members to provide feedback on their experience with the new technology.
Conduct regular evaluations to identify any challenges or areas for improvement
and address them promptly.
Human
Factors Related to Change
Some staff members
may be resistant to change due to a lack of familiarity or comfort with new
technology. To address this concern, provide comprehensive training and support
to ensure that staff members feel confident and competent in using the automated
dispensing cabinets. Highlight the benefits of the technology, such as improved
accuracy, reduced medication errors, and streamlined workflows (Grissinger,
2012). Change can disrupt established routines and workflows, leading to
resistance. Acknowledge the potential disruption and emphasize the long-term
benefits of the change. Engage staff members in the planning and implementation
process to ensure their concerns are heard and addressed. Provide clear
communication about the timeline and expectations during the transition period (Al-Abri,
2007). Staff members may express concerns about the potential for
medication errors or system failures with automated dispensing cabinets.
Address these concerns by highlighting the safety features and rigorous testing
that go into the design and implementation of these systems. Provide evidence
from studies that demonstrate the positive impact of automated dispensing
cabinets on reducing medication errors (Wu Yi Zheng, 2021). Change can be
challenging for individuals and organizations. Some staff members may resist
change simply because it disrupts their comfort zone. Acknowledge the
discomfort and emphasize the importance of adapting to new technologies and
practices to improve patient safety and outcomes. Provide ongoing support and
encouragement throughout the transition process (Nilsen, 2020).
Measure
outcomes
Measuring and monitoring outcomes of the
change process is essential for recognizing whether or not the change process
has fulfilled its purposes (Al-Abri, 2007). The impact of this change proposal
can be measured through various metrics. One way to measure the outcome is to
track the number of medication errors before and after the implementation of
automatic medication dispensing cabinets (Fanning, 2015). By comparing these
numbers, healthcare facilities can assess the effectiveness of the new
technology in reducing errors and improving patient safety. Monitor and record
the incidence of complications such as allergic reactions, overdoses, or
adverse effects, before and after the implementation of AMDCs. Analyze the
rates of medication diversion or misuse before and after the implementation of
AMDCs, using data from audits and inventory reconciliation (Fanning, 2015).
Conduct time-motion studies or surveys to evaluate the impact of AMDCs on
nursing workflow and time spent on medication-related tasks.
Conclusion
The proposed change to automatic medication dispensing cabinets will
have a significant positive impact on patient safety. Through the
implementation of advanced technology, medication errors will be reduced, and
the overall medication administration process will become more efficient. By
measuring indicators such as medication errors and time saved, the impact of
this change can be quantified and evaluated. Through effective communication
and addressing concerns related to change, the staff can be engaged and
supported throughout the transition, ensuring successful implementation.
