Title: The Evolution and Influence of Jazz through the Career of Miles Davis and a Contemporary Jazz Artist
Answer 2 of the 3 questions below. Write a minimum of 750 words per question. Format your essay using 12-point, Times New Roman font, double spaced. Provide a simple bibliography at the end of your source material, which can be from the class text or other academic and well-researched sources. Use parenthetical citation and quotations when necessary.
Describe the career of Miles Davis in the 1960s and later, and identify how he influenced jazz-rock fusion of the 1970s, both in terms of musical style as well as musicians he hired who eventually went on to develop careers of their own.
Pick a living jazz artist recording and performing today. Listen to some recordings and discuss their career. In what ways are they connected to previous styles of jazz? In what ways have they departed? Consider the instrumentation, rhythm, harmony, tempo, etc. Which styles of jazz (cool, hard bop, bebop, etc.) could they have evolved from?
Is jazz, most broadly conceived, increasing or declining in either importance or popularity? Cite cultural trends to support your view. Part of your answer may depend on what you consider to be jazz. Another important consideration may be record sales: They measure popularity, but do they measure importance? -

Title: Exploring the Sonic World of Korean Traditional Music: A Live Performance by the National Gugak Center Name of group or artist: National Gugak Center Date and place of event: October 10, 2020 at
For this assignment you will find
and view a recording of a live performance online (around 20-30 minutes in
length) and then relate your listening and viewing experience to the themes we
have discussed so far in the course. You can select any musical genre,
tradition, or artist for this assignment. I’d love if you chose something you
are unfamiliar with though perhaps curious to learn more about, but you are not
necessarily required to do so.
Your report should be at least 500
words (not including your name, title of your paper, date, etc…), and reflect
on the key terms, themes, and ideas that we have discussed so far in the class,
including:
–
Name
of group or artist.
–
Date
and place of event.
–
Description
of the sonic activity or music: instruments, key sonic characteristics, other
important features you hear, etc…
–
Context
of event: what did you observe? Was it a concert of popular music? Was it
formal/informal? Who attended? Who performed? Where was it? What was the
trajectory of the performance? How many songs? Was there audience interaction? What
were some of the notable the visual/physical elements? etc…
–
Discussion
on the use and function, or meaning, of the performance. Think about the
exercise in our first class and think about what the performance “is
giving,” and also expand on that by trying to express, in your opinion, why
and how is it “giving” that?
–
Explore
some of the social connections that this performance, this musical scene, and
the people involved may have?
–
Provide
some background on the genre, performer(s), or any other relevant context. You
may want to consult an outside resource for this if it is not provided in a
description of the event.
–
Proofread
your assignment: double check your spelling, grammar, style, and format. -
“Exploring the World of Jazz: A Review of Kurt Elling’s Performance”
The papers should be 2 pages (minimum), double-spaced, and 11- or 12-point font. Please submit your review papers via the Concert Review Paper tab on Blackboard. All papers are to be written in your own words with no cutting and pasting from internet sources or the textbook. Any form of plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in automatic failure of the paper!
Here is a link to a sample concert review.Jazz Concert Review: Vocalist Kurt Elling — Going Through the World with Curiosity
For this assignment you will attend or watch a performance (live, video, or virtual) of any genre of American music and write a short review paper. The performance should be a minimum of 45 minutes. (Youtube video concerts are ok!) While writing your review paper be sure to incorporate relevant information and musical terminology from class readings, listening, class discussions, etc. The papers may be written in either first or third person and should be in the style of a concert review that you would typically read in a newspaper or internet blog. There are many aspects of a performance that you may focus on, but don’t try to cover everything that happened during the performance in your review. Instead, pick a few moments and pieces from the performance that encapsulate the overall experience of the presentation. You can talk about the abilities of the performers, how the performers presented themselves, the music, how the music was interpreted, aspects of the performance that really stood out, things that you did not like, etc. Honesty and fair criticism are always welcome, but be careful to maintain a respectful tone throughout your review.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the assignment.
