Short Paper Assignment 
Develop and answer a focused research question based on your genuine interest in exploring one music-related health and wellbeing method or practice, or a clinical Musical Therapy method or practice.  
Please ensure that included in your citations, you reference between 8-10 peer-reviewed academic articles that are directly relevant to, and support, your discussion within the body of your paper.

Writing Style: Each paper should be a well-written focused approach to exploring your topic and well-articulated research question. Please proofread carefully before handing it in. 
Please do not begin your paper with 1-2 paragraphs of over generalized fluff about health and music. “From the time of the first cave persons, sticks were used to communicate rhythms…” We were not there, and so it is overly theoretical and assumptive, rather than historical and factual. 
There are primarily two ways to begin an academic paper (at the upperundergraduate level):
Either 1) Your first sentence of the paper begins with “the guiding research question” or “thesis statement” of this paper is as follows: In this paper, I will be exploring the question ‘…’ ” Or 2) Your first paragraph ends with that sentence (or something similar ), and your first few sentences build up to that “guiding research question” or “thesis statement” with a logical addressing of the issue of interest to you that you will be covering.

Title Page. Please ensure your paper has a title page with all identifying information (the same as the journal reflection format). But make sure that it is centered with a title at the top—a title that respectfully and specifically represents your paper’s research question.

Overall Format: Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, double spaced.

A grading rubric may be provided closer to the date of submission, but essentially the paper will be graded as follows: • 10% a well-articulated research question that is answerable in the space allotted (what is the space allotted? 5-6 pages, 1250 words, a word count that is not including the title page or references page) • 70% a meaningful, well-thought out, logically argued, exploration of a topic. • 10% correct formatting throughout, including proper citation format. • 10% spelling and grammar.

Music & Physical Exercise Regime: Combining Interventions 
Suggested Research Question: How is music or “preferred music” combined together with an exercise regimen affecting certain populations? Does it increase their health and wellbeing? In what ways have researchers (scientists, spots psychologists, music therapists, etc.) noticed significant changes? How did they test this? Did they record reportage by interview, with a questionnaire on happiness (after a certain time period, e.g., 1 week, 2 months, etc) or by asking participants to log their sleep patterns (if that is what you are interested in). If you would like to explore a more mixed methods approach, leaning toward the qualitative, you can read studies where participants are asked to describe their perceptions of productivity and feelings about quality of life. You are invited to design your own research question and exploratory pilot study.  

Write a 3,000 words essay. Your essay should answer a unique question, based on your own choice of suitable music. You must demonstrate that you are able to elucidate the music in detail, by demonstrating music theory taught through this module. You are also encouraged to incorporate additional refinements of these tools, through your own imagination and/or reading.
Send the title of the essay ASAP.

Attatched are just bits of information from the module that we have been provided. This is to give you an idea of the kind of music theory you should talk about. Also, feel free to write about any genre, not just classical music genre. I’ve also provided a powerpoint that I did for the last task, to give you an idea of the kind of music theory stuff im talking about.
I can provide you with video lecutres, but you would need to view them on apple books.

This last assignment is about craft, creativity, and your own story. I want to showcase a small variety of content on YouTube that depict many of the behind-the-scenes processes in music. You’ll see instrument repair, instrument construction, and interesting experiments. I may add to this list as the semester goes on and as I encounter interesting content. I would like you to weave your own experiences into a narrative. Think about your interests, hobbies, and goals.

(15 points) Write 400-500 words.
(15 points) Reflect on these videos. You should draw from your interests or hobbies.
(15 points) Tie all of this into who you are today and where you would like to be in 5 years.

You have been reading many, many articles. I want you to put together a cohesive paper that flows – do not simply list a bunch of questions and answers. Try to imagine this could be published by Vox or NPR or Billboard or Buzzfeed or…
You should discuss most of the following topics, and you MUST include an artist to discuss as an example to illustrate your viewpoints.
These are suggestions to help you organize your thoughts for your paper.

Of the articles and videos and guest interviews we’ve had this semester, which ones resonated with you the most? What did you get from them?
What have you learned about MUSIC in this class? Again, do not simply list vocabulary words. I want to know what has changed for YOU.
Has your perspective on activism or advocacy changed, particularly through the arts?
You must choose an artist who is different from the artist you chose for your first paper and who plays a different genre of music from your first paper and tell me about her.
Tell me what YOU think about her music, her work, her advocacy, or anything that is important to YOU about this musician.  
Please cite specific examples from the articles, videos, and visits in your paper. BE SPECIFIC.
Have you learned about challenges that women in the music industry face? Has your perspective on that changed?
Perspectives on feminism and what is means to you – don’t just quote a definition from another source. 
Have you learned about or experienced genres of music you have not heard before?
Did you know what intersectionality was before? Talk about your perspective on that. DO NOT just quote another source that defines the term.
Have you learned about women that you hadn’t heard of before? 
Did you learn about women that you had heard of before but didn’t really know much about?
Are you likely to pay more attention to the representation of women and female-identifying and BIPOC musicians now?

Your paper must have a title.

Must be organized in a cohesive, logical manner.
Must be proofread, checked for proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Any specific statistics, facts, or quotes must be properly cited.
All words and phrasing must be your own.
Do not cut and paste ideas or phrases from other sources.
Papers will be checked, and plagiarism of any form will not be tolerated.
Penalties for plagiarism range from a failing grade on the paper to a failing grade for the class to being reported to the university for violations of academic integrity.
Paraphrasing and splicing together other people’s words still counts as plagiarism. 
Using other people’s words but randomly changing a word here and there is still plagiarism.
Papers that read as generic, not your own thoughts, or as if they’ve been created using AI will not be accepted.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
YOUR PAPER MUST INCLUDE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY WITH 3-5 SOURCES. (You may list more if you have ACTUALLY used them.)
Your bibliography should include all the sources you actually use.
Don’t pad your bibliography with sources you don’t use just to make it look longer. 
Online sources must be formatted correctly. I don’t have a preferred style as long as you pick one and stick to it. (Chicago, MLA, etc.)

Research Project Requirements and Submission
Topic: Choose a musical topic that interests you and submit to your instructor for approval.
Requirements:
Select a topic which interests you.  You need to get instructor’s permission to write about it.
Research the topic in detail.
Write a five page (double spaced) paper on your chosen topic.
Paper must have a title page, including the instructor’s name, course number, date, title of the paper, and student’s name.  This is an additional page.
This assignment must be typed.
Your paper must be properly documented according to the MLA format/style (see link to MLA instructions below in “grading the paper” section) of documentation (parenthetical notes within the text of the paper and a works cited page at the end of the paper).
