“Exploring the Impact of the Internet on Music Sales: The Music Modernization Act and the Battle for Artists’ Rights”
To receive full credit – Please read and follow all directions associated with discussion postings. Watch the tutorial to be sure you understand the process and grading criteria.
This week’s discussion topic is about how music is “sold” or shared (legally and illegally) on the internet. Composers and musicians have traditionally been able to earn income through sales of their recorded works and compositions. File sharing compensation laws and illegal file sharing sites have changed this in the internet age, making it more difficult for artists to be paid for music distributed over the internet. This assignment has you read about the fairly new Music Modernization Act, signed into law in 2018, and also includes jazz composer Maria Schneider’s testimony to Congress about how the large players in data collection have gotten around paying artists for the intellectual content/creative property. Artists and record companies continue making efforts to work with lawmakers to look at current file sharing law.
Research MORE information on this topic to find a variety of viewpoints that will help you form an educated opinion on the topic.

“Exploring the Lived Experiences of a Gangster Rap Artist: A Qualitative Analysis of One Album” “The Evolution of Gangsta Rap: A Critical Analysis of Hip-Hop Coding Schemes and Academic Literature on a Selected Artist”
Semester long research paper about a rapper just make it all one paper.
Here are the directions
Students must develop a semester long paper that explores the lived experiences of one Gangster Rap artist or Gangster Rap group; as well as conduct a qualitative analysis on one album. The first part of this paper or Midterm Paper is a five-page summary (double-spaced) and analysis of a set of lyrics (from one album). Students are expected to identify 1-2 themes from the Hip-Hop Framework and trace this theme(s) across the artist’s album. Analysis should also be guided by a stated research question.
More specifically, Midterm Papers are required to plainly identify or explain: (1) name of artist/group; (2) (if possible) racial-ethnic identity of artist/group; (3) location: neighborhood, city & state artist/group; (4) name and significance of album; (5) guiding question for paper; (6) coding scheme (1-2 themes) used to analyze the album in relation to paper’s question; (7) conclusion; and (8) references. Midterm Papers should span between seven-to-eight pages (including title, abstract and reference pages).
Coding schemes consist of 1 or2 themes selected from the Hip-Hop framework. Also, the Hip-Hop framework posted on Canvas.
Moreover, students will code the entire album or identify where your 1-2 themes emerge on the album. Specifically, the Midterm Paper assignment also requires students to highlight all lyrics that speaks or applies to your coding scheme. Also, in a separate file, please submit the lyrics of the entire album; with the highlighted lyrics that speak to your theme(s). If you fail to submit the coded lyrics for the entire album, then 25 points will be deducted from your Final Paper grade. This means that a perfect paper will only receive a 75 for a grade.
Furthermore, Midterm Papers consist of seven parts:
I. Mid-Term Paper – Qualitative Analysis
(1) Title page (1 page);
(2) Abstract – (1paragraph);
(3) Introduction – the introduction clearly describes the focus or topic, population and research question(s) (1/2 – 1 page);
(4) Qualitative Analysis (4-5 pages)
(5) Conclusion (1/2 page – 1page) –summarize core arguments raised in paper;
(6) Reference section
(7) Coded Lyrics – print out all lyrics for one album and code lyrics
Final Papers are tasked with revising the Midterm Paper and conducting a five-page literature review. Also, this literature review is required to draw on high-quality academic references including: journal articles, edited book chapters, books or reputable news periodicals. And the literature review should be inserted at the beginning of the paper; and the revised Midterm Paper should follow the literature review. Final Papers should consist of 12-14 pages (including title, abstractand reference pages).
Final Papers consist of seven parts:
II. Final Paper – Literature Review
(1) Title page (1 page);
(2) Abstract – (1paragraph);
(3) Introduction – the introduction clearly describes the focus or topic, population and research question(s) (1/2 – 1 page);
(4) Literature Review (4-5 pages);
(5) Revision of Midterm paper (5 pages);
(6) Conclusion – remind the reader of the core arguments raised in your paper (1page);
(7) Reference section

The first part of this paper or Midterm Paper is worth 20% and is due on Tuesday April 2nd, 2024. More specifically, this first part requires a five-page summary and analysis of a set of lyrics (from one album). This paper is required to plainly identify or explain in the opening paragraph: (1) name of artist/group; (2) racial-ethnic identity of artist/group; (3) location: neighborhood, city & state artist/group; (4) name and significance of album; (5) coding scheme used for qualitative analysis; and a (6) guiding question for paper.
This paper opens up with an introduction that explains the focus on the paper. Secondly, the body of the paper consist of a critical summary or qualitative analysis in relation to the paper’s question. Last, this paper is completed with a formal conclusion or summary of the paper; to be followed with a reference section. Midterm papers should consist of eight pages (including title, abstract and reference pages).
Coding Schemes consist of 1-2 fundamental components of the Hip-Hop framework. This Hip-Hop framework will be discussed in class and posted on Canvas.
Additionally, the Mid-Term Paper assignment requires students to code the entire album in the relation to the paper’s 1-2 themes, which means highlighting everything that applies to your chosen coding scheme. Also, you will have to submit the lyrics of the entire album with your paper; with the highlighted lyrics that speak to your theme. If you fail to submit the coded lyrics for the entire album then 25 points will be deducted from your Final Paper grade. This means that a perfect paper will only receive a 75 for their grade without the coded lyrics.
Please see Final Assignment Outline for more detailed information on the Midterm Paper. Also, make sure to review sample papers as an example of a well-written Midterm paper. The Final Assignment Outline and sample papers are attached on this course’s Canvas site.

This paper identifies the artist’s/group’s: (1) childhood & family experiences; (2) relationship with friends and local community; (3) experiences with street life; (4) impetus for Hip-Hop music; (5) current Hip-Hop standing and social impact of music; (6) how artist/group is tied to larger arguments in the Hip-Hop literature; and (7) reference page. And the majority of the Final Paper needs to focus on a review of the larger academic literature in relation to your artist.
Also, your paper is required to be grounded in high quality references (i.e., journal articles, edited book chapters, academic books). Papers with cheap or low-quality references (i.e. YouTube interviews, Wikipedia, poor websites) will be penalized.
Final Papers also must be written in APA style; be 12-14 pages in length; and have at least 10 high quality or traditional academic sources or references.

Topic #2: Early America
Discussion Board Topic #2: Early America
From the earliest days of colonization to the birth of the nation in the Revolutionary War and up through World War I, America grew from scattered settlements into 13 colonies, and finally into 48 states. What began as a wilderness became a country, at first small and weak, but evolving quickly into a world power.
What did you learn in Parts One and Two that you didn’t already know about
American history,
American culture, and
American music?
Give examples or citations from our studies to support or illustrate your statements – one each for history, culture, and music.
How has this changed your view of America or American history?
That’s 7 items to include in your initial post.
