  • “Exploring the Musical Brilliance of the Miles Davis Quintet: A Personal Reflection on their Live Performance”

Essays must contain a minimum of 900 words. If your essay is less than the minimum length, you will
not receive full credit. While reviewing your selected jazz performance, take notes on the songs as they
are played. Write sentence fragments describing your observations concerning such musical aspects as
melody, harmony, rhythm, improvisations, form, texture, arrangement, overall ensemble dialogue,
interaction, and stylistic details. This information will serve as the basis for your essay. In your essay,
summarize your experience, explain aspects of the performance you liked or disliked – and explain
why. I am primarily interested in your personal conclusions and thoughts based on concepts you have
learned in this course related to jazz performance, group interaction, and improvisations. First,
compose a rough draft. Begin with general information about the performance, including who
performed, where the event was held, and any other essential details about the concert that you can
provide. Underscore the songs you preferred the most and talk about anything you liked the least, the
makeup, and the performance’s overall mood. It is crucial to coordinate the piece’s emotion with how you depict each song. Then, conclude your paper by recapping the event and providing an overall
reflection. Lastly, proofread your essay and correct any grammatical and structural issues before
    submitting the finished document

  • Title: “Sad Academy: The Rising Orlando-based Artist Making Waves in the Music Scene”

You are to write a 150-word bio for an artist based in Orlando without a recording contract. Use professional language and make it clear and concise. Though you will be tempted to simply put down the facts in some ordered and organized way, a good biographer makes the story compelling and easy to read. A bio for a press kit needs to be short, usually just a page of narrative with an additional page for lists (see below). The entire document should be written in ‘third person.
THE ARTIST/BAND THAT YOU WILL BE WRITING ABOUT IS SAD ACADEMY BASED IN ORLANDO. THEY HAVE A WEBSITE WITH INFORMATION AS WELL. . In it provide at least one sentence on
Name, and what genre they would be classed in. Avoid “they are so unique they don’t have a description” or similar.
State that they are based in Orlando.
Cities where the artist has played, or if only based in Orlando, name of venues.
How the artist got started, or if a solo artist, when they started playing professionally.
How the artist got their name/stage name, or if they are using their given name if a solo artist.
Why the artist is unique. Avoid “they sing songs from their heart,” or “they are dedicated to their craft.” Every good artist does that.
If the artist is multi member, recognize each and their personal experience.
If the artist had a member who was part of a band before that had some success.
Notable releases, if available, and their streaming platforms.
    The artist’s history.
Before writing the bio, research is done on the artist’s background, accomplishments, goals, and interests to find interesting and unique features that will set the artist apart from others. Keep in mind the target readership of the bio. The bio should be succinct and interesting to read and create an introduction that clearly defines the artist and the genre or style of music. The hardest decision for the biographer may be deciding what to leave out. Give yourself time to write and rewrite the bio several times until you get the story just the way it needs to be.
The assignment for most people should be 150 words, on a word document or a pdf, using Times font at 12 point size. You will get full credit for a compelling biography of your artist throughout that is free of grammatical errors. As thus, it is suggested that you have multiple people read it before you submit it.
Also, please double space, justify your text, and indent your paragraphs.

  • “Empowering Through Music: Exploring the Cultural Practice of Hip Hop in the African American Community” Introduction Music has long been a powerful tool for marginalized and oppressed populations to unite and empower themselves. From the Shona people of Zimbabwe and their use

A common thread throughout this course has been the way that music and other folk traditions unite and empower oppressed and marginalized populations. Think of the way music functions as a connection both to the past and to one another for the Shona (mbira), contemporary Native Americans (intertribal music), or, if you’ve read ahead, the Chilean revolutionaries (nueva canción). Review the various types of Ethnomusicology. Then find a music-cultural practice strongly identified with a traditionally oppressed or marginalized population. This can be a population closely associated with your surroundings or experience, or one you find through research. But either way, it must be accessible to you in a way that allows you personal experience and interaction with the practice or the participants, either in person or online. Aim to be present (online/recorded or in-person) at a performance or event of at least 45 minutes’ length, and write a report about the event. (Be sure to take notes while you’re watching). Find someone involved in the practice to interview, or, if you are a first-hand source, share the information you have, personally, about the practice. Then write a 750-word paper introducing us to the practice and performers. Tell us: What the genre or general type of music is.
What the cultural context for the event was. Who the artist or performers are.
How the practice relates to the social experiences and contexts of the artists.
What the artistic expression means or symbolizes for those involved in it. What instruments were used and what songs were played (if you don’t know titles, just describe them).
How the audience responded (YouTube comments are fine)
What the practice means to you, personally, and what you took away from it. You must include a screenshot and/or other visual elements. You must cite all sources used for the content you submit in APA, MLA, or other consistent long-form citation format.

    Carole King

  • “Exploring the Elements of (Genre) Music: A PlayPosit Listening Bulb”

For this Midterm assignment, you will create your own PlayPosit Listening Bulb.
    A. To start your Listening Bulb:
Select a song that fits into one of the genres from Ch 3-8 (Folk, Religious, Jazz, Popular, Music of/Beyond the Americas). If you are unsure whether your song fits into one of these genres, feel free to email me for clarification. Nearly all music fits into one of these genres except for European classical music (which we will cover in the second half of the course).
Find a video of the song on YouTube, Vimeo, or another site. Live performances are strongly preferred over still images or lyrics videos. Try to find a video where you can see the performance of music.
    B. Once you’ve selected your song and found your video, you can start on your Listening Bulb. Your bulb must include at least 10 questions. In your 10 questions:
at least one question must ask about part of the form (structure) of the song using genre-appropriate form vocabulary like verse, chorus, intro, interlude, or other vocabulary connected to form in that genre
at least one question must require the listener to ID an instrument
at least one question must ask about something related to the history, development, or vocabulary specific to that genre (For example, a question about a jazz song might reference the improvisation.)
at least one question must ask about the timbre of a specific sound source within the song
at least one question must ask about the melody in some way
your remaining 5+ questions can ask about the same musical ideas listed above at different moments in the song, or other musical elements, like dynamics, texture, tempo, harmony, or other elements from Ch 2
at least 9 of your questions must be multiple choice (can be single answer or ‘check all that apply’, but not free response)
at least 9 of your questions must be fact-based (not opinions)
up to one question may reference the lyrics; it is NOT a requirement to discuss the lyrical content of your song
    C. In all of your questions, you CANNOT:
ask about visual elements that are unrelated to the music (For example, “the artist filmed the video in the desert because…” this is unrelated to the music)
group all of your questions at the beginning or end of your song. Questions should be relatively spread throughout the song, asking about meaningful musical moments as they occur.
ask questions at random time stamps. When your question pops up, it should connected the music just heard and be meaningful in timing. Even though putting your questions every 20 seconds is ‘purposeful’ and not random, that would still not be meaningful timing as it relates to the music.
The assignment will be graded using the following 100-point breakdown:
10 points: selected song is from a genre covered in Ch 3-8 and is not classical music
20 points: questions address the points in section B, above
10 points: questions are at meaningful, purposeful musical moments, not at random moments
10 points: questions are spread throughout the song, not all clustered at the beginning and/or end
5 points per question: the correct answer is indicated (you select the correct answer choice for your own questions)
Click the Load button at the bottom of the page to start on your assignment.
If you would like guidance on how to use the PlayPosit site to create your Listening Bulb, watch How To Create A PlayPosit Listening Bulb pt 1 and pt 2 the next page in this module for assistance.

  • The Power of Music in Film: A Comparative Analysis of Two Scenes from Different Composers

For this assignment, you will need to select (2-3) films with different composers and discuss the use of music in two (2) scenes from each film. Start by describing the scene and then consider the following:
    • How does music enhance the scene?
    • Does the music elaborate or detract from the scene and how so?
    • What was the intent of the music used for the scene?
    • How does the music in the scene make you feel?
    • What emotions did you feel while watching the scene? • Were you frightened, struck by terror, or sad? • Did your emotions change during the scene? • Would other viewers share your reaction or react differently and why?
Sources/Documentations: Your essay must include at least 2 documented sources for each film discussed in your essay. You should also strengthen your arguments with quotes from the evidence and elaborate on each point of view. Be sure to analyze the evidence as you research it. Do you agree or disagree with the author’s position? Look for statements by the composers themselves. Scaffolding:
    • Provide a one-paragraph statement explaining why you chose the films you plan to select and a thesis statement in which you will discuss how you will identify or define the main issue. Why are you personally drawn to the music in these films? This is due (11th week; 1st day). (15 points) • Once approved, an outline of your essay using complete sentences and a bibliography of sources is due (14th week; 1st day) during which you will make a case for several of the questions suggested above. (15 points)
    • The final paper is due to be submitted in the assignment box in Blackboard by Wednesday of finals week. (70 points)
    Assignment Requirements:
A 3-4 paged 800-1000 word-processed paper not including title page (title, your name, course number, section, and name, professor’s name, and date submitted) and works cited page. Double-space with one-inch margins using Times New Roman 12-point font. For works cited page and in-text citations use MLA format.
Your critical and integrative thinking assignment will be assessed for critical thinking as part of the university’s assessment program. Be sure to read through the critical thinking documents so you understand the assessment process. A grading rubric is also provided and it’s a good idea to review this when you begin the assignment. Everything you need can be found when you click on the critical and integrative thinking assignment button. Attached are the rubrics and assignment details.
    Plagarism free is expected.
