1. Active Listening
Active listening forms the foundation of successful coaching. It entails paying full attention, understanding, responding to, and remembering the client’s words. This skill enables coaches to fully grasp their clients’ needs and concerns, building a robust relationship between coach and client.
To engage in active listening, keep eye contact, use body language to show you understand, and repeat back what the client says to confirm comprehension. It’s important not to think about your next response while listening, as this can distract from truly understanding the client’s message.
