Take any concept from Thomas Foster’s Book and apply it to a Dubliner’s Story in an analytic, thesis centered essay. Get at a central meaning of the story as revealed through the particular literary technique you’ve selected from Foster’s book.
Cite all sources in MLA style. Minimum 3 sources beyond primary texts of Joyce and Foster. If you do not cite sources properly and consistently utilizing MLA in-text citations and a proper Works Cited table, you may fail for plagiarism. Submission of papers generated by CHAT GPT are surprisingly easy to detect – I have the skills and software-and you will be failed for academic dishonesty and reported to the Dean of Students for further academic discipline.
Thesis example: Thomas Foster writes “Weather is never just weather. It’s never just rain” (70) and this is true of James Joyce’s use of snow in his short story “The Dead,” where Gabriel Conroy realizes the snow falling all over Ireland is a metaphor for the death that eventually will equalize all his relatives, himself, his friends and all Irish citizens, past and present.
Topics you may not cover, as they already have been covered in class lecture or samples:
The role of illness in “The Sisters”
Blindness in “Araby”, or the Bible themes of the Fall, or the boy’s journey as a quest

Vampires in “Two Gallants”
never stand next to the hero in “A Little Cloud”

The Impact of Intersectionality on Identity in “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin
Short Story “Sonny’s Blues” from Baldwin, James. “Sonny’s Blues.” The Norton Introduction to Literature, edited by Kelly J. Mays, shorter 14th ed., W. W. Norton, 2022, pp 659-681.
Intersectionality Theory
900+ words
Use this opening paragraph:“Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin takes place in Harlem, New York, during the 1950’s post World War II. The short story portrays the intense bond between the narrator and his little brother, Sonny, which is defined by their African American backgrounds and forced to face racism and prejudice. The narrator, with no name, voices his experience with brother, heroin addict Sonny, in a non-sequential structure. The personal identity markers revealed by the author throughout the story define the different lifestyles the brothers lived and view on life. One is a family man with a dead daughter, the other lives a dangerous, free life. Analyzing the novel from the point of view of intersectional theory, makes it possible for the readers to understand in detail how disadvantaged communities affect the characters.

“Sonny, you haven’t even finished school” (Baldwin 671).
(age):
“The seven years’ difference in our ages lay between us like a chasm: I wondered if
these years would ever operate between us like a bridge. I was remembering, and it
made it hard to catch my breath, that I had been there when he was born; and I had
heard the first words he had ever spoken. When he started to walk, he walked from
our mother straight to me. I caught him just before he fell when he took the first
steps he ever took in this world” (Baldwin, 664).
(thinking style):
“I ain’t learning nothing in school,” he said. “Even when I go” (Baldwin 672).
“ when he was supposed to be at school, he went straight to that piano and stayed there until suppertime. And, after supper, he went back to that piano and stayed there until everybody went to bed. He was at the piano all day Saturday and all day Sunday” (Baldwin 672).

“Exploring Gender Roles in Robert Butler’s ‘The Good Scent from a Strange Mountain’ and Sue Monk Kidd’s ‘The Secret Life of Bees’” “Perfecting Your Paper: Tips for Proofreading and Polishing Your Writing”
Robert Butler’s “The Good Scent from a Strange Mountain” and Sue Monk Kidd’s “The Secret Life of Bee’s”
During the course of this semester, we have read works in which several
different authors have addressed elements of folk literature from a unique
cultural perspective. This paper will ask you to do two different things to
satisfy True Blue Core objectives. First, it asks you to select ONE of these
elements and compare the ways in which TWO authors (at least one of which
should be from texts read since the mid-term – Kidd, Dumas, or Gaines)
incorporate this element into their texts. Choose one element from the list
below:
– Gender roles (I wanted to pick Gender Roles)
For example, if you were to select “Courtship and Marriage,” you might
compare some of Butler’s characters’ experiences (e.g. the narrator from
Mid-Autumn, Miss Noi, etc., representing the Vietnamese culture), with those
shared in Firoozeh Dumas’ novel (representing the Iranian culture). Be sure
to identify the culture that the book/author represents, and include examples
from the texts. Correctly cited textual examples and quotes are
essential for a passing grade on this paper. It will also probably be
helpful for you to define the term/element you are discussing in your
introduction since this will help you to maintain the focus of your essay.
So, if you are writing about Foodways, be sure that YOU know what you mean
by this term and define it for your reader.
Your paper should be three to four pages in length, should be presented in
MLA style (including quotes/citations) and should be submitted to the D2L
Dropbox by 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 27th, unless you have an extension
mandated by the DAC. NO late papers will be accepted for this assignment,
so please don’t wait until the last minute to submit your paper.
True Blue Core Objectives
– Explore how literature reflects, informs, and shapes both personal and
collective experience;
– Articulate cogent responses to literature that demonstrates cultural
awareness and understanding;
– Reflect on how reading, writing, and interpreting literature initiates and
contributes to cultural and social conversations;
– Examine how the production and interpretation of literature is shaped
by historical, social, and cultural contexts,
– Analyze how literature from different cultures, movements, and time
periods employ narrative and stylistic strategies to convey complex
ideas and meanings;
– Compose projects (written, digital, or audio) that utilize critical
thinking, analysis, and research to situate literature within diverse
cultural and conceptual frameworks.
Hints for writing your paper
– Make sure you have a strong thesis;
– Make sure to refer to cultural context, and also define the
term/element you choose to write about;
– For the comparison/analysis part of your paper, use third person
and avoid the use of “I” or “You” unless they are part of a direct quote.
For the Reflection section, use first person.
– Use present tense when discussing literature (for example, instead of
saying, “Antonio witnessed the death of Lupito,” say “Antonio
witnesses the death of Lupito.”
– Always refer to authors by their last name, not their first name;
– Include relevant quotes that support your thesis and the point you
want to make. Fore example, instead of saying, “Antonio is conflicted
about what to believe,” you might say “Antonio’s conflict regarding
what to believe is demonstrated when he states ‘…I was still trying to
hold on to God. I didn’t want to give him up like Florence had’ (Anaya
207)”;
– After a quote, include the author’s name and page number the first
time you refer to his/her work; after that only the page number is
necessary, unless you change authors;
– If you are using a non-print source, at least identify the author’s name
after each quote, and whatever relevant information you have (section
number, title of short story, etc). Also, identify the fact that you are
using a non-print source on your Works Cited page;
– Proof read your paper carefully before submitting it. Spell Check and
