Compare and contrast the definition of love in two different texts from our syllabus. If you are using poetry, choose two full poems, or four fragments. How does each author represent love? Do they have a complicated or simple understanding of it? Is their definition of love connected to the historical or cultural context(s) from which each author comes?
You’ll notice immediately that you must work with two different texts to be credited for this assignment. All ‘texts’ must come from our class syllabus. 
You will be asked to work towards this essay in multiple components: choice of prompt/project, detailed outline, first draft, two in-person workshops, and a final draft. 
These essays require research, i.e. engagement with a secondary source or two. 
Do NOT use the following sources:
Encyclopedia Britannica
Wikipedia
Any blog
Another poem, play, prose piece, or novel
Anything that summarizes your chosen text(s)
Anything that verbatim ‘confirms’ or repeats your argument.
Actually relevant to your topic.
Peer-Reviewed; from a nonfiction anthology, a peer-reviewed journal, or a newspaper article with citations and research within it.
Analytic; offer the author’s interpretation or opinion, and backed up by outside research. 
All essays must employ MLA style citations and bibliographies

You’re going to have an introductory paragraph ending in a thesis. The thesis needs to be a statement of your opinion, it needs to be in some detail. In other words, “a subject and then an opinion” about that subject. Probably based on one of your discussion posts, some of the ideas and opinions you developed therein. Maybe it is on Cervantes: Don Quixote since you are devoting so much time to that and energy to that book.
I will provide you two or three outside sources, e-books (e-books that you can use for secondary sources: and no others).
So this is a 5-paragraph essay. The second third and fourth paragraph are body paragraphs.
Your conclusion should start with a re-statement of your thesis and then go on to expand the scope of your thesis probably by making statements about how the work of literature has impacted your life or how you see it applying in the real world. Each paragraph should be 200 words as a goal. As a goal, however, 300 words would be better.
You are also welcome to have 4 as opposed to 3 body paragraphs if you want, that will also make your paper longer and more substantial.
Your thesis together with your topic sentences taken together should form an outline. Roman number one, a, b, c.
….Or a,b,c,d if you have 4 body paragraphs.
Citation will be standard MLA 9th edition: make parenthetical in-text citations and also a list of works cited at the end of your document to include your textbook as well as the two e-references.

The transition from middle to high school is a key time for students as they reach new levels of both academic and personal discovery. Please share a book (novel, non-fiction, etc.) that had a serious impact on you during this time. Please focus more on why this book made an impact on you and less on the plot/theme of the book itself (we are not looking for a book report).
We are not restricting you to the exact years of 8th-9th grades, but rather the general timeframe of the middle to high school transition, which can extend somewhat further than one year on each end. Feel free to use your discretion in your choice of the timeline focused on the shift to your high school years.*
