Justice and Retribution in The Odyssey: Comparing Ancient Greek Concepts with Modern Views. Explore the theme of justice and retribution in The Odyssey and compare it to modern perspectives on crime and punishment. Analyze how characters like Odysseus, Penelope, and the suitors are dealt with by the gods and society. Consider how concepts of divine intervention, honor, and revenge shape notions of justice in ancient Greek literature and how these compare to modern ideas of criminal justice and morality using a text like Hurston’s “Sweat” or Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis.” Broaden your comparison with a third text or film that reinforces the claims you make in your comparison of the two-course texts. Make sure to substantiate your claims with researched, cited facts.

“Analyzing Ugly Love through a Feminist Lens: A Close Reading of Colleen Hoover’s Novel”
Essay 3: Literary Criticism
1 For the final major assignment, choose a work of fiction to analyze and a critical lens to use as the basis of your analysis. Conduct a close reading of the book and compose an essay using techniques from the literary critics we read in class (Morrision, Sehgal, Hopper, Pfeiffer, or the New Yorker fiction podcasts).
Your critical lens should be a theory or perspective that resonates with you in some way, and that you think would be interesting to use for your analysis. For example, you might choose to read your book from a feminist perspective, or through the lens of queer theory, or you may want to evaluate how immigrants are represented, you could apply a Marxist lens, assess a plot for implicit capitalist values, analyze how characters with disabilities show up, how particular religions are characterized, and so on.
Your close reading of the novel should include a summary of major plot points and a description of characters and scenes that are significant to your analysis. Your initial summary should be delivered as objectively as possible, giving your readers a sense of the book before you begin your analysis.
In order to effectively conduct your analysis, you will need to provide an overview of your lens. For example, if you choose feminism, select an article from a prominent feminist scholar that you can draw on for your essay. You don’t need to conduct a comprehensive study of feminism, but find two or three respected thinkers in the field, and use their texts to help you define key terms and ideas.
Requirements
• A novel of your choice (minimum 100 pages)
• A lens from which you’ll conduct your analysis
• Essay: 1500-1700 words
• Two sources from prominent scholars in the field (at least one source should be a peer-reviewed journal article)
• MLA Format
• Draft note describing your revision process

“Comparing and Contrasting Literary Analysis and Mathematical Modeling in Two Stories”
Your assignment is
–to select any two stories and to compare/contrast them using both literary analysis and mathematical modeling. If you are tracking clues, you should definitely pick one story that figures on Moretti’s + side of his evolutionary tree (See Week 10, Moretti reading, p. 73, figure 30), and one from the – side of his evolutionary tree. If you aren’t tracking clues, it’s less important which two you pick. You are free to stick to Moretti’s discussion and track clues, but remember all the other ways we have thought about stories in quantitative terms (counting, statistical graphs/tables, probability models, and networks).

The Pros and Cons of Social Networking: Exploring the Impact on Individuals and Society
For this paper, you will create an argument that defends your position on whether social networking sites offer more positives or negatives to the individuals who use them (you can also argue whether these sites are good for society or not). These sites can range from general-themed friends-and-acquaintances sites (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to specific interest message boards (Pinterest, Reddit, etc.) to video and information-sharing sites (Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, etc.). As with any argument, you should start off with an interesting and informative introduction that includes a thesis statement that meets the standards for a thesis. This thesis will be defended by reasons and evidence. One part of your support needs to be an emotional appeal to needs and/or values. In making your argument, you will also need to properly synthesize material from at least three of ten essays that will be uploaded to our Canvas page:

Exploring Narrative Space and Fantasy Objects in His Dark Materials: A Corpus Stylistic and Cognitive Poetic Analysis
For this dissertation, the target text for analysis is His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. The overall aim is to analyze its two world-building elements: the narrative space and the fantasy object (referred to as Dust, Shadows, sraf), and how they contribute to the HDM narrative world construction. Analyze them with corpus stylistic methods and cognitive poetic perspectives.
For the chapter on narrative space, the analytical framework is Paul Rayson′s tripartite keyness model (keyword, key part-of-speech, key semantic domain), which is from corpus linguistics. Analyze key linguistic features in the construction of the narrative space. The web-based corpus tool Wmatrix can be used.
