Good afternoon I am a United States Marine and this Tuesday I have court because about a month ago during a holiday I took a flight home to see my family but I didn’t do it the right way generally we have a range to travel abroad from the base and during a holiday the range is 450 miles but I traveled 550 miles so I had to make a special leave request and I didn’t do it because one of my friends told me that I didn’t need it so on the day of my trip another of my Ncos told me that since I was not going outside the limits of a holiday and had not made a special leave request I could not go, but nevertheless I left ,The day I was supposed to return I missed my flight and as a result I could not get to work at the designated time and I let my superiors know that I missed the flight and where I was. When I returned they told me that they were going to give me NJP (non judial punishment) with 14 days of restriction and 7 days of payment reduction and I was fine with that, I made a mistake but and I was willing to pay for it, but today they called me telling me What were they going to give me? admin separation that is basically getting kick out, on Tuesday I’m going to talk to my company commander and I need to convince him to give me another chance to stay, Outside of the military I have nothing for myself, I have a girlfriend who is currently pregnant so I was planning to get married next month, my grandparents in my countries count on me to send her money or for her medicines I am not a bad person nor a bad soldier alone I make mistakes by letting myself get carried away by my emotions of seeing my family who I had not seen since December of last year. Another reason I want you to take into consideration is that I am not yet a citizen, I am currently in the process, I am just waiting for my appointment to go take the test.  If they separate me from the military, I will not be able to renew my permanent residence and I will become an illegal immigrant in this country. It will also be impossible for me to find a job that is not construction. I need you to help me with a statement that can convince him to give me a second chance. Your final research essay topic will be chosen

Step 1:
Choose a legal issue
Some examples of contemporary issues might
include: workplace safety, access to clean water, resource extraction and
development, mental illness, decriminalization of street drugs, the justice
system, freedom of expression for journalists, the rule of law, piracy human
rights of children, wrongful convictions, prison conditions or the relationship
between certain groups and members of the justice community.
Essentially you can take on any legal issue
of your choice involving International Law, Domestic Criminal/Civil Law,
Environmental Law etc.
I would suggest taking on an issue of
controversy or one that has a good deal of research.
Step 2: Select
a Country of Interest to Compare with Canada
This is to be a comparative essay, where you
will take on a country of your choice and compare their legal practices with
Canada. The goal in the end should be an evaluation of which country operates
more efficiently.
Step
3: Create and submit an annotated bibliography

We will go over the format of an annotated bibliography in class and I will
post the content as well.

Your annotated bibliography must include have
4 – 6  varied sources. The annotated
bibliography counts as process work for the research essay and is a necessary

“Symbols are used to communicate and enable obedience to authority. Prohibiting the display of symbols offensive to the state is therefore the best way of enforcing its authority.”
Critically evaluate the accuracy of this statement by considering the example of the German Swastika and one contemporary example of another symbol from a country other than Germany.

EMA Advice
This EMA tests your understanding of themes in Unit 8A in particular, but you may also choose to draw on material from elsewhere in Block 3A.
You are asked to ‘critically evaluate’ the accuracy of the statement. Critically means ‘in a way that makes judgements (backed by discussion of the evidence or reasoning involved) about the merit of theories or opinions, or the truth of facts’. ‘Evaluate’ means ‘make an appraisal of the worth or validity or effectiveness of something in light of its truth or usefulness’. You are therefore asked to come to a conclusion as to whether or not the statement is accurate (true) through considering two examples of the use of symbols.
One of those examples is the German Swastika, and you can draw upon material from unit 8A and sources found from your own independent legal research in your discussion. Your second example must be from a country other than Germany, and it should not be the Swastika. It should be a contemporary (recent or current) example. The second example you chose does not need to be a symbol which has already been prohibited by a state (or country), but should be an example where there has been debate and discussion around whether or not it should be prohibited. You are unlikely to achieve a pass mark for this EMA if you do not discuss a second contemporary example, as you will not have answered the question.
The choice of contemporary example to analyse is yours and the choice you make may lead you down different paths to answering the question. You may use examples from an authoritarian, totalitarian or fascist state, but of course you may select one from a democratic state. Whatever path you take, your response must be supported by independent research based on suitable, relevant and reliable sources and materials. In the context of the research and example you choose to focus on, the ideological policy debate and national laws that exist should be highlighted. This ideological debate is invariably contested, and this should be explicitly presented.
This EMA question, therefore, requires you to do four things:
Choose one contemporary example of a symbol where there has been discussion and debate over whether that symbol should be prohibited by the state, stating the choice you have made in your essay introduction.
Evaluate whether the German Swastika and your chosen contemporary symbol are used to communicate and enable obedience to authority (and whose authority).
Evaluate whether the prohibition of the German Swastika and your chosen contemporary symbol is the best way of enforcing the state’s authority.
Come to a clear conclusion as to whether you consider the statement is accurate.
You need to demonstrate a critical understanding of the materials you employ in your argument. Simply reciting knowledge will not suffice. This means that you should choose materials that most effectively support the structure of your argument and enable you to focus your answer on the EMA question posed.
