The primary source documents from Pietro della Valle and Nzinga Mbemba demonstrate that the world-especially relationships between Europe and the rest of the world–were changing in the 1500s. What changed and how are those changes reflected in these letters? (This is most obvious in the letter by Mbemba, but we encourage you to include both documents in your essay) You may cite them using the document number in parentheses following the citation. (EWC 2.1, for example) you do not need to quote the document directly. It is better to describe what the document says than to include a long quote.

Title: The Ambiguous Emergence of Capitalism in the Early Modern Era
Historians generally refer to the period from about 1450 to 1750 as the “early modern era.” This term implies that certain elements of the modern world emerged during this era. Of course, history is always more varied and nuanced than neat chronological boundaries can capture.
Identify one aspect of the modern world that may have emerged during the “early modern” period. Then, explain how that same aspect could also be viewed as a continuation of older patterns, and thus falls short of being fully modern. Use specific examples from the readings to support your response. -
