  • Title: “Nation-Building in Japan, Russia, and Germany: A Comparative Analysis of Processes, Resistance, and Motivations in the 19th Century”

This assignment focuses on the development of “nations and empires.” More specifically, you are comparing the processes of nation-building in Japan, Russia and Germany.
What was unique about the nation-building process in each of the countries in the second half of the nineteenth century? How did the elites who led these processes respond to groups who resisted their efforts?
What were each country’s motivations for expansion?
How did each country’s path toward industrialization compare? To what extent were efforts to modernize education systems part of the industrialization process?

  • “The Attack on the USS Panay: A Historical Analysis of Events, Outcomes, and Repercussions”

Research paper (50%). You will use primary and secondary source research to write a paper that is at least ten pages long. This assignment is due on May 14 by 3:00 PM.
    1. Start with an introductory paragraph. Its first sentence should be specific to your topic and draw the reader in (good options include a brief anecdote, a quote, etc.). From there, include just enough background to give your reader necessary context (this is where you’ll use secondary sources, probably). Finally, the last sentence of your intro paragraph should be your argumentative thesis
Most papers will then require a paragraph of basic background information. This information should not be vague and huge but instead specific to your topic.
Now you’ll turn to your argumentative topic sentences. Each paragraph should begin with an argumentative topic sentence and then include the primary source evidence (and secondary when necessary) to prove that argument.
    4. A concluding paragraph. This is always more difficult than you’d expect to write. It shouldn’t just recap your paper, but it should not just open up entirely new fields for discussion, either. Instead, it should do a little recapping, a little consideration of the larger significance of your topic, and, perhaps, a bit of musing about its larger importance.
AVOID PASSIVE VOICE. This is one of the most common problems with history writing (undergraduate, graduate, and professional). Using passive constructions lengthens sentences unnecessarily and often renders them confusing. In addition, passives remove “agency”–human action–from history, which is supposed to be a record of human action. Government and corporate documents, especially those addressing controversial issues, often use the passive tense and thus avoid assigning responsibility to anyone. (Example: “A decision was made to shred the documents.” Note: adding “by President Nixon” to this sentence does not make it any less passive!!!) Remember that a good scholar addresses controversy instead of avoiding it.
CHICAGO STYLE CITATIONS USING FOOTNOTES OR ENDNOTES
PAPER SHOULD BE ON THE USS PANAY precisely what events occured when the panay was attacked, outcomes, reperations the japanese faced, and more. Attached is a draft of my paper and it was absolutely terrible according to my professor. They told me to completely toss it in the trash. PRIMARY SOURCES ARE A MUST USE!! AND SECONDARY SOURCES! But the main focus should be primary sources. and multiple paragraphs can be okay doesn’t need to be just 5. If needed I can provide some primary sources.

    Introduction
In the previous unit, we learned about the rise of Rome and the Roman Republic. But Rome
was not the only city in the region of Italy known as Latium. Much like the Greeks, the people of Latium also lived in independent city-states. They had a common language, worshipped the same gods and celebrated similar festivals but often came into conflict with each other. For example, the city of Etruria situated to the north of Rome and ruled by Etruscans often attacked cities in the Latium.
Hence, defense was central to Rome’s military and political policies. At the same time, expansion into the Italian peninsula would prove beneficial for trade by eliminating its rivals. A relatively new player in the Latium, Rome soon rose to a powerful position and began to conquer the lands and people in its neighborhood. Naturally, it had to fight many wars to achieve dominance in Italy. Soon, it looked beyond Italy to the whole of Mediterranean, and eventually far off lands in Asia and Africa. In this unit, we will learn about the wars and conquests at home and abroad that led to Rome’s rise as a global power.

  • Title: The Misconception of the “Great Wall”: Reexamining Qin/Ch’in Fortifications in 215 BCE Thesis: Contrary to popular belief, the Qin/Ch’in state did not build a single, continuous “

Please write a short paper in which you rephrase in your own words Waldron’s argument why Qin/Ch’in did NOT build a “Great Wall” (your thesis). You should reinforce your thesis by describing the most likely kinds of infrastructure/fortifications that the Qin/Ch’in state built around 215 BCE. You should reference in particular pp. 18-22 and Map 2 in Waldron’s book.
You should begin with a specific thesis/argument, drawn from this chapter and from what you now know from the associated lectures and accompanying additional materials I have provided. Following your thesis, the body of your paper should include specific examples drawn from the book, with appropriate citation of page number showing the source of your information, ex. (Waldron p. __). I want to see that you can use specific historical data that Waldron provides, reframed in your own words, illustrating that you understand Waldron’s argument.
Please keep your response between 2-3 pages (500-750 words). I’ll give you through the weekend to complete this first response paper, and you should submit it to this assignment as a Word document (NOT in PDF or other format).
    NO USE OF AI!!!!

  • Title: The WPA Slave Narrative Project: Examining the Experiences of Former Slaves Through Their Own Words

You will need to view the following video in its entirety. It is a little over one hour long, so you will need to set aside time to view it and also to analyze it in your essay. I highly recommend taking notes and writing down the names and dates of the interviewees as they appear so you can add them to your essay. You will not need to cite the video in MLA format, but you will need to put any words that are not your own and directly from the video in quotations and give credit to the person who said them. For instance, if you quote one of the slave narratives; please put the quote in quotations and credit their name in parentheses behind the quote. Make sure you completely address the essay components and view the rubric to see how you will be graded.
I have been notified that the link to the video I posted below (from Cornell) is not working. Thank you to Peter for finding the video via YouTube. Please click on the link below and let me know if you have any questions.

Your essay will need to address the following parts of the video. You will also need to include direct information/quotations/stories from at least 3 of the slave narratives that appear throughout the video. Make sure you include the name of the person, their age, and where they were from/location of interview when you reference them. Your paper needs to be at least 700 words in length and should fully address the following components:
Begin your essay by briefly addressing what the WPA slave narrative project was, who participated in it (can note how many former slaves were still living at the time of the project), who completed the interviews and how the former slaves felt about being interviewed.
Below you will find a list of topics covered in the video. You will need to address at least 5 of these topics and answer the analysis questions about your selected topics. Make sure you also include at least 3 of the slave narratives in your analysis (make sure to include the name, age, and location/prior living location in your essay).
    Education
    Work,
    Punishment
Role of race/mixed race/master fathering children, rape
    Religion, spirituality, song, funerals
Living accommodations, Feelings towards whites (good, bad, in-between)
    Patty rollers (patrols), passes, autonomy
    Marriages
    Slave trades and escape
Civil War, Emancipation Proclamation, service to the Union (how many slaves/former slaves served as union soldiers)
End of war and freedom granted
For your 5 selected topics (I recommend dividing them into five paragraphs) and addressing the following questions:
What was a typical slaves experience regarding your topic? (can bring in (quote) a slave narrative as an example)
What is your reaction to learning about this topic? Did you already know this happened; did you just learn this happened? How does it make you feel?
Compare and/or contrast at least one part of this topic and/or their story/narrative to a part of slavery you have studied from the Hollitz Chpt. 10 textbook and any relevant information from Gorn chapters 11 and 12. You will need to include specific quotes/references from our textbooks (please cite in MLA format). How is the slave narrative similar or different to what you have already learned in the textbooks?
What lesson or take away have you learned by looking at this topic of slavery? How has it changed or expanded your view of slavery?
Overall conclusion- in a paragraph wrap up your main ideas about the topics and slave narratives you addressed and the overall take away/lesson from viewing this video project.

  • “Challenging Conventional Narratives: Exploring the Intersection of Form and Content in ‘As I Remember It’”

Instructions: As I Remember It (
https://scalar.usc.edu/ravenspace/as-i-remember-it/index  ) is a multi-media, open source book that shares a non-linear narrative of ɬaʔamin teachings through the device of one woman’s life experiences. As a new media publication, it seeks to challenge both the form and the content of conventional narratives about Indigenous peoples in settler contexts. For this essay, you will identify and provide evidence for a key “argument” or “concept” that you have identified as conveyed by the authors in As I Remember It. Your thesis statement could either lean towards the historical (something that the book teaches us about the history of Indigenous peoples and settler colonialism in British Columbia), or towards the methodological (something that the book’s structure or format teaches us in a conceptual or methodological sense). Regardless, you must analyze at least to some extent the relationship between the book’s structure and its content.
