  • “The Symbolic Meaning of Kenji’s Amputated Leg in No-no Boy: Reflections on Trauma and Resistance in Historical Context”

Write a 6-12 page paper discussing the symbolic meaning of Kenji’s amputated and rotting leg in John Okada’s No-no Boy. Do so while reflecting in writing on the trauma inflicted on real and fictional people during the histories we have discussed and read about over the second half of the semester (after assignment of the midterm). To get a good or even passing grade, one must demonstrate extensive knowledge of at least five of the following texts or videos:
Immanuel Kant, “An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
Jamelle Bouie, “The Enlightenment’s Dark Side How the Enlightenment created modern race thinking, and why we should confront it” (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

    John Okada, No-no Boy
One can also draw from Frank Waln’sWhat Makes the Red Man RedLinks to an external site.
    Minimize Video
Students can draw as well from videos that were part of the Iguchi lectures. “One may consider how real real people and fictional accounts reflecting historical events and history sometimes reveal how people find ways to process, challenge, and overcome trauma. In this regard, one might take into account what Waln does with his song and how this repeats and yet transforms the content of the film Peter Pan (1953). One might also consider John Okada’s No-no Boy and that novel’s protagonist Ichiro (or the novelist himself), as well as the heroic leadership of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and the comedy of Trevor Noah, a man who was “born a crime.” Lastly, it would not be a bad idea to minimally draw from the introductory chapter of James C. Scott’s Against the Grain Download Against the Grain.

  • The Conquest of Italy and Beyond: A Comparison of Sparta’s Peloponnesian War and Rome’s Conquest of City-States in Italy and Carthage

Just like Greece, Italy was composed of several city states. In Unit 3, you studied about the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta and how Sparta came to dominate Athens and the other Greek city-states as well. Similarly, Rome also embarked on a journey to conquer and consolidate the cities in the Italian Peninsula as well as the neighboring kingdom of Carthage.
According to you, what were the similarities and differences between Sparta’s purpose in the Peloponnesian War and that of Rome against city states in Italy and the city of Carthage?
Your Discussion should be a minimum of 200 words in length and not more than 500 words. Please include a word count. Following the APA standard, use references and in-text citations for the textbook and any other sources.
    Introduction
In the previous unit, we learned about the rise of Rome and the Roman Republic. But Rome
was not the only city in the region of Italy known as Latium. Much like the Greeks, the people of Latium also lived in independent city-states. They had a common language, worshipped the same gods and celebrated similar festivals but often came into conflict with each other. For example, the city of Etruria situated to the north of Rome and ruled by Etruscans often attacked cities in the Latium.
Hence, defense was central to Rome’s military and political policies. At the same time, expansion into the Italian peninsula would prove beneficial for trade by eliminating its rivals. A relatively new player in the Latium, Rome soon rose to a powerful position and began to conquer the lands and people in its neighborhood. Naturally, it had to fight many wars to achieve dominance in Italy. Soon, it looked beyond Italy to the whole of Mediterranean, and eventually far off lands in Asia and Africa. In this unit, we will learn about the wars and conquests at home and abroad that led to Rome’s rise as a global power.

  • Exploring the Rich History of al-Mu‘izz Street: A Personal Reflection on the Monuments of Cairo’s Historic Street

For this assignment, we need to write a 2.5-page note about just one monument on al-Mu‘izz Street (between al-Hakim mosque and Azhar Street). I went for a walk on al-Mu‘izz Street to look at the monuments, so the note has to be written in the first person. I haven’t chosen any monument so you can look up the monuments on al-Mu‘izz Street built before the year 1600 and write about it as if you who went for the walk. For the monument you chose you should look it up and learn something about it separately.
So the note should be about something that struck you during the walk—an institution we visited/discussed (or some aspect of it); the width or shape of the street (al-Mu‘izz Street today, aka Bayn al-Qasrayn); the aesthetic style or entrance of a monument, etc.
This is not an essay: it is a note about your personal experience of something on the walk.
Below, you’ll find the professor’s tips on how to write better essays. This is very important as he is a very tough grader, and I really need to get the highest mark in this, as I got a D grade in both my midterms.
Thank you in advance. Looking forward to reading the writing.

  • Title: Exploring American Political Culture, the US Constitution and Civil Rights

    ForumModule 1: Discussion Forum
Review the reading materials and engage in the discussion topics below:
    Read Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5
After completing the background reading, engage in a discussion that provides your informed opinion on the topic. Make sure to include citations in APA format to your questions/responses to help your classmates develop a deeper understanding of the topic.
ENV.current_user_fullname, you must cover two questions from “American Political Culture” and “US Constitution and Bill of Rights” topics, plus all the questions from the “Civil Rights” in your original post.
American Political Culture Why do only 45% of Americans take part in the political process OR VOTE?
If we are the leading figure on Democracy in the world, why do so many Americans distrust our Political Process?
Compare and contrast the priorities of the Federalists and Antifederalists for the design of the new Constitution. Although the Federalists argued for a stronger central government (and in many ways, they got one), the Antifederalists won important battles, such as the adoption of the Bill of Rights and the retention of power in the states. What does the debate between Federalists and Antifederalists tell us about American politics in the late eighteenth century? In what ways are the values and concerns of these two groups similar to or different from today’s political debates?
Combating terrorism has entailed restrictions on civil liberties. How can we reconcile civil liberty and national security? Are we better off opting for more liberty or more security? Are the two goals mutually exclusive? Have Americans become less supportive of the limitations on liberty put into place after the terror attacks in 2001, or do they still perceive that it makes sense to give up some liberties in order to feel more secure?
US Constitution and Bill of Rights Did the Constitution provide us with a Strong Central Government in DC? or did it provide us with a Dictatorship style. E.g., D.C. now controlling Education (No Child Left Behind)
Are we still a free country under the Constitution (Bill of Rights) or has our government taken away our rights? e.g. Patriot Act.
READ: NASA Internet Mining Article Links to an external site. Would the Foundering Fathers be happy with the way the Constitution is interpreted today?
In light of the recent NSA spying on Americans. Do you believe that government has a right to do so or is Security more important than our constitutional right?
Civil Rights – Answer all questions for this topic.
Listen to the two-minute NPR segment about Dion Diamond Links to an external site., take notes and answer following questions.
What is the purpose of sit-ins?
Do you think student activism was important to the civil rights movement?
What are some examples of contemporary student activism?
How dangerous is it to stage a civil rights protest today in comparison to the 1960s?
You must post three responses (200+ words minimum for each post) for this discussion board. In the discussions students create a single post on the selected topics (200+ words) and respond to two classmates (200+ words each) for a total of three posts. Please see the syllabus for additional information on the requirements for discussion forums.
