“The Three Orders of Christendom: An Analysis of Medieval Society and its Representation in Primary Sources”
** will need to use the class book reading as the sources cant use outside sources. Compose an essay, 1000 words minimum, that addresses all the parts of the question above. Use only the secondary and primary sources provided in our readings and on the course site. Aim to use at least half of the primary sources as the main evidence to support your analysis.
essay questions:
A common image of medieval Europe invented in the 10th century was the Three Orders of Chistendom comprised of clergymen, nobles, and laborers. How accurately did this schema reflect the reality of medieval society as it developed after 1000? What groups were left out? How would characterize the makeup of medieval society? Ask yourself these questions before you submit your essay. They all reflect what’s in the rubric and on the discussion boards. These are what I look for as I evaluate your essay. Watch the video on rewrites for more on all this. Hope it helps!
1. Do I open with an introduction that lays out all the parts of the question and situates the topic in historical context? 2. Do I address each part of the question using only the images and primary sources provided on the course site and in our textbook? Don’t use outside materials!
3. Do I use paragraphs to group together at least two sources/images to support each of my main points as I address each part of the question? Three is even better!
4. Do I identify each image and source’s point of view? Who wrote it? When? Audience and purpose? Kind of document? Don’t just number the source!
5. Do I analyze how the sources relate to the question or do I simply just describe them with little reference back to the question?
6. Do I make sweeping generalizations and use anachronisms*? Or instead do I limit my analysis to what the evidence supports and keep focused on the historical context?
7. Do I address change over time in my analysis? Do I use the textbook to connect my essay to relevant historical trends?
8. Do the sections of my essay buiild one to the next? How does the point I just made in one paragraph lead to the next one I plan to make?
9. Do I close with a conclusion that sums up the main takeaways of the essay, including change over time?
10. Did I proofread my essay to correct errors and improve its clarity and organization?
* An anachronism is a chronological inconsistency in some arrangement, especially a juxtaposition of people, events, objects, language terms and customs from different time periods. Anything that is out of its historical time and place is an anachronism. A common example is to apply standards and norms from today that were different from those in the past, to say, for example, that people have always wanted to be equal or that women have always worked in the home. Those are both sweeping generalizations and anachronistic. -
“Uncovering the Olmec: Exploring the Debate on their Role as the Mother Culture of Mesoamerica” Introduction: The Olmec civilization, which flourished from approximately 1200 BC to 400 BC in what is now
The Research Paper Prospectus writing assignment is very important and is the start of the larger final research paper. Provide a preliminary research paper title. No cover pages are required. The Prospectus will contain:
1. An introduction with necessary historical context (background) and the importance of the topic. In the introduction, cite three different academic sources (please note that for the introduction, these must be books). Remember, citations are not synonymous with quotations. In academic writing it is important to cite when: (1. Paraphrasing, 2. Referencing a text, 3. Synthesizing information, 4. Analyzing, 5. Comparing readings, 6. Assessing information, 7. Using a quotation. )
2. A research question at the end of the introduction. This question must be open-ended and research based. It should begin to build an argument answered in part by the thesis statement.
3. A thesis statement paragraph that responds to the research question. It is important to set up the thesis statement with additional historical content. This is necessary when setting up an argument. Please note that it is necessary to also cite sources in the thesis statement paragraph. 4. Analysis and argumentation in support of the thesis statement. It is important to write a minimum of four-to-six (4-6) strong, evidence-based paragraphs in support of the thesis statement. In these supportive paragraphs, cite a minimum of three times in the in-text citation form. 5. Do not conclude. The paper is not finished yet; rather, provide a “road map”–which is an analytical discussion of what will follow next. Explain what the final research paper version will look like and what sources are needed to finish the paper. In this “road map” you will begin to develop a plausible counterargument and explain how you will refute it.
6. Provide a Works Cited page. (Total sources cited for the Prospectus= 8). Four academic books, two academic journal articles, and two primary sources. Special note: It is important to write the Research Paper Prospectus Draft in the MLA format (Modern Language Association). Please refer to the Purdue OWL MLA guidelines. They have updated the 8th to the 9th Edition of MLA recently.
Every paragraph will contain numerous in-text citations in parentheses. These are also referred to as in-text parenthetical citations, ex: (Samuels 233), (Armesto 120). Both of these citations contain the last names of the authors referenced and the page numbers consulted.
Research topic: Evaluate and analyze the debate surrounding Olmec society as the mother culture of Mesoamerica

[Prompt]
“In the years between 1815 and 1848, two rival political programs appeared, reflecting rival sets of hopes. Some Americans felt largely satisfied with their society the way it was, slavery and all, especially with the autonomy it provided to so many individual white men and their local communities. They wanted their familiar America extended across space. Other Americans, however, were beguiled by the prospect of improvement to pursue economic diversification and social reform, even at the risk of compromising some precious personal and local independence. They envisioned qualitative, not just quantitative, progress for America.”
Explain this passage from Daniel Walker Howe in a more or less narrative style essay that is no shorter than 1200 words. What are these “rival political programs,” what specifically did they want America to look like, and in what ways did they advocate for their respective visions? Furthermore, what is the difference between “qualitative” and “quantitative” progress and how do they differ? Finally, how does the Civil War, and its lead up, figure in these conflicting visions?

“Comparing Island Tourism: A Case Study of Saint Lucia and [Other Island]”
This assignment is a continution of a mid-term paper. I attached the research proposal for this paper so you’ll have an idea of what the paper is about. I am hoping you could probably use 1-3 different articles to compare One island (Saint Lucia) to another (your choice).Below is a remark from my professor with the following steps.
Professor Remarks:
You have done an excellent job incorporating
your voice with the authors. You have a significant amount of information that
can be used toward the final paper. Next step is to search google scholar,
JSTOR for (5-7) articles to further provide more details toward your argument.
This paper has the potential to be a masterpiece with additional article to
show the interaction between different sources. In other words use one author’s
argument versus the other… as in: Author A argues that xyz while author b
refuted the argument with this view etc…. -
“The Changing Relationship between Religion and Politics in Early Modern Europe: An Analysis of Machiavelli’s The Prince and Martin Luther’s Letters”
One of the main features of medieval Europe was the integration of political power and religious authority, with Christianity serving as a key tool with which rulers constructed and legitimized their power. In some cases, this meant secular rulers like kings using religion as a basis for their power. In other cases, this meant religious figures like popes using their position as a way to exercise authority over society in general. In the early modern period, however, the relationship between politics and religion changed in important ways. The Italian Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation were both key events in this changing relationship and may have contributed to the “secularization” of power in early modern Europe.
For your final essay, you will examine the changing relationship between religion and politics in the early 1500s. This examination will be based on your analysis of two primary sources: Machiavelli’s The Prince and the letters of Martin Luther. In your essay, you should be able to contextualize these sources and explain the historical circumstances in which they were produced. More importantly, you should analyze them in ways that reveal how each source imagines the relationship between authority and religion. Through your analysis, you will either argue that the secularization of politics was a major trend in early modern Europe or that religion continued to play an important role in politics in early modern Europe.
Your grade for this essay will be based on three factors. First, do you demonstrate keen understanding of the themes and ideas of each primary source that we have discussed during Unit 3? Second, have you constructed convincing analysis of the primary sources that supports the overall argument of your paper? Third, do you provide evidence from the sources to back up your analysis and is the evidence clearly and effectively integrated into your paper?Your essay should be around 5-6 pages (about 1,200 to 1,500 words) in length. Its analysis should be thoroughly supported with specific textual evidence from the primary sources. You should cite all quotations and textual evidence using in-text, parenthetical citations. Your essay should be typed, double-spaced, and have page numbers. The primary source should be used from Perusall. If you don’t have access of Perusall than ask me to give the source and I’ll send it to you.
