    To order to explain which western society before 1500 gave women the most amount of rights and which society gave women the least amount of rights, compare the roles of women in three societies. You must select one culture to compare from each of the following categories:
    Category 1: ancient Mesopotamia (Sumer through Hammurabi’s Babylonian Empire) or ancient Egypt (Old Kingdom through the Third Intermediate Period) 
    Category 2: ancient Greek city-states or ancient Rome
    Category 3: medieval Latin Europe or medieval Islamic cultures
    The paper will need a thesis that clearly states the main argument(s) of your paper in answer to the question.
    The paper must be double-spaced with 12 Times New Roman Font and with one inch margins.
    The paper must be at least 3 pages and no more than 5 pages.
    16.5 points will be deducted for every half page under the minimum page requirement.  
    Please note that 3 pages means 3 full pages of text. Title pages, titles, names, and other such information, such as a bibliography do not count toward the page count.
    Please be aware that unless you are submitting a doc/docx file, you will need to convert your file into a pdf. TXT files, Pages docs, and Google docs are incompatible with Canvas, and I will be unable to grade your assignment if you submit such a file.
    You are required to use only the assigned textbook and lecture for this essay.
    You must cite the textbook and lectures using in-text citations when you use information or ideas from them, when you paraphrase or summarize them, or when you directly quote them (but you should never directly quote them). As a result, your essay should include in-text citations. In-text citations must follow the following format:
    Example for the book: Sumer was in Mesopotamia (Hunt et al, 44).
    Example for the lectures: Sumer was in Mesopotamia (L2P2).  Please Note: L=Lecture; P=Part
    Please do not simply copy sentences from the book or lectures. Rather, explain the evidence in your own words in order to demonstrate both your understanding and analysis of the book and lectures. If you simply copy sentences from the book or other sources without using quotations or citations, you will earn a failing grade (most likely a zero). 
    Do not use direct quotes from the textbook or lectures, and if your paper is largely a string of quotes, you will most likely earn a failing grade. Even when you include citations, you need to put direct quotations in quotation marks. Paraphrase!
    If you use or even consult any AI program, including but not limited to Grammarly, Microsoft Copilot, and ChatGPT, to answer the question or to help you formulate your answer, that is plagiarism, and the penalty is a zero without the opportunity of revision.
    Essay Guidelines and Expectations
    Argument: The essay should have a strong thesis, which should be a clear argument that answers the question, and the essay should prove the thesis.
    Organization:
    You should write a five-paragraph (or more) essay (Introduction with a thesis, Body Paragraph 1, Body Paragraph 2, Body Paragraph 3, Conclusion).
    Each individual body paragraph should have a strong topic sentence that focuses on one distinct argument in support of the thesis. The task of that paragraph is to explain and support that argument as fully as possible with evidence.
    Your paper should have a concluding paragraph that again summarizes your main points.
    Evidence: The essay should demonstrate knowledge of the topic.
    You should integrate factual information and ideas from the textbook and lectures.
    Include as many details as you can, and be as specific as possible and accurate. Do not be vague.
    Grammar/Spelling
    The essay should follow the rules of formal writing and spelling.
    Write in the active voice whenever possible.
    Others things to consider
    Is there a sense of time, either of duration or location?
    Does the paper have a purpose, i.e., is it trying to prove something?
    Are there facts in the paper, and do these facts serve the paper’s purpose?
    Are terms clearly defined?
    Does the paper have a recognizable and logical structure, i.e., is it readily apparent why what is stated in a particular paragraph follows what preceded it?

  • “The Complexities of Freedom in American History: An Analysis of Three Key Events” “Exploring the Impact of Social Media on Society: A Comprehensive Analysis”

    No idea is more fundamental to Americans’ sense of themselves as individuals and as a nation than freedom.” (Foner, et al, Preface to Give Me Liberty!, xxxi)
    If there is a single idea that has unified the narrative of this course on American history it is the idea of freedom. Yet, as we have seen, freedom is a far more complicated idea that it might first seem. When Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence he stressed the universal and innate character of human freedom, prior to the establishment of any political state:
    “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” (Jefferson, Declaration of Independence)
    Certainly, Jefferson’s aim was to conceive of a more fundamental—and unalienable—concept of freedom than that which colonists exercised under the “English Liberties” established by the British constitutional monarchy. Yet, in practice, freedom in American history is far more inconsistent, contested, restricted, denied, and that many have had to struggle to attain freedom’s basic exercise.
    For the third and final paper of the course you will develop a unique historical argument about the meanings of freedom since the end of the Civil War: how it was exercised by some and not others; how some Americans conceived of their own freedom as dependent upon its denial to others; how it has been achieved by some and then lost; how Americans have used the idea of freedom to define their sense of identity in different historical contexts.
    Requirements for Paper 3:
    Choose three events from three separate historical periods in which the idea of freedom is present in some sense. Each event you choose must come from the following historical periods (one event from each period):
    Reconstruction to the Progressive Era (1865-1920) World War I through Watergate (1914-1973)
    Neoliberalism to the present (1970-2024)
    For each event you choose, explain how freedom was exercised, attained, restricted, denied, or otherwise struggled for.
    For each event explain either the continuity of freedom over time (how it endured, or was reinforced), or its discontinuity (how it was modified or changed from earlier periods).
    To support your argument, in your paper, for each event that you analyze, discuss (at least) one primary source from the course reading assignments (either from Voices of Freedom or other assigned readings, but not from sources other than those assigned). Also, select sources that were not analyzed in previous papers (do not choose Douglass, Luce, or Wallace).
    Based on your historical analysis, develop a thesis about the meaning and significance of the idea of freedom in American history. For example: Why is freedom significant? Why is it contested? Why is it elusive?

    The aim of the exam is to test your understanding of materials discussed in the lectures and assigned as reading. I am particularly interested in finding out how good you are at thinking critically about the different kinds of written testimony and material evidence we have for this period. What problems does each source raise? what contexts help us use it? and what is its wider significance for understanding the Roman Republic
    You will be asked in each examination to write commentaries on five of the ten provided. For each one, write up to one page. Answers will be graded on quality not length. For each case, describe its context, its historical significance, and comment on any questions of interpretation. Depending on the passage or image, you might want to explain technical terms or allusions, pick out the political or literary aims of the author or maker, write about how it relates to other available evidence, or just show what it contributes to our understanding of the age. You should focus on explaining and interpreting: do not waste time repeating or paraphrase the passage, and do not write a mini-narrative, even if one springs to mind when you see a piece.
    You will have an opportunity to write in a different way for the final paper. But for this exercise I am interested in your skills as an historian in interpreting evidence.

    “Your task is to identify someone who experienced a social, political, or economic change in the twentieth century or twenty-first century interview that person about his/her/their experiences, and then write an essay that situates your interviewee’s experiences in a larger historical context. If your interviewee directly experienced a major event, such as the Depression, a war, or a major social movement you could certainly write about that. But even the lives of people who weren’t directly involved in a major historical event or movement still changed as a result of those events or movements. You could also focus on an interviewees work, and explore how their profession has changed.     I chose to interview my Dad, who has been teaching for over 20 years, about the changes to the American education system over his time both in school and as a teacher. I have attached a document containing all of the major bullet points from our interview as well as an outline for the paper that I was going to use. You can absolutely structure the paper differently from the outline, just make sure to use the information that my father provided as a source for the writing.
