  • “The Olmec Civilization: Evaluating the Debate on its Role as the Mother Culture of Mesoamerica”

Research topic: Evaluate and analyze the debate surrounding Olmec society as the mother culture of Mesoamerica
    Sources from JSTOR
The Final Research Paper for MAS 141 will contain:
    1. A thorough and complete historical introduction in which you cite a minimum of three scholarly books. This helps to establish strong academic credibility and sets an academic tone for the paper. Avoid general statements in the introduction such as, “Since the beginning of time….” “People think that….”, “Did you know that….”, etc.
    2. Include an open-ended research question at the end of the introduction. You must make the question open-ended and arguable. There should be a strong link between the research question and the thesis statement.
    3. A thesis statement/main argument in the second paragraph. You can think of this as a thesis statement paragraph.
    4. Consistent thesis statement support in every paragraph with the use of academic sources. Remember, you want to prove a point, and back up that point with strong use of evidence. Read sources carefully and stay on the subject, do not digress unnecessarily. Every paragraph should include a minimum of three MLA in-text citations in parentheses. Ex: (Robles 145). A good rule of thumb is to always consult the MLA OWL handbook online or other reliable MLA websites. Refer to the 8th or 9th edition of the MLA handbook.
    5. Use primary sources, if applicable, from “The Mexico Reader” in support of your main argument. “The Mexico Reader” is full of primary sources, and I am confident you will find a primary source, or more, that relate to your topic.
    6. A counterargument paragraph with a rebuttal (think about what other people could argue about against you and then provide a rebuttal of the counterargument itself). Thoughtful counterarguments and rebuttals reinforce the strength and academic validity of your thesis statement.
    7. A conclusion that sheds light on your research paper’s importance.
    8. A complete Works Cited page in MLA format.
    9. Your research paper should contain a minimum of eight (8) research sources, not including the sources found in “The Mexico Reader”,.
The research paper for MAS 141 will be ten (10) pages long, not including the Works Cited page. Do not expect to earn an A or A- if you write less than nine full pages of excellent quality.
Write your research paper in Times New Roman, 12-font, with double-spaced lines and with one-inch margins. Include an original title for your paper. Additionally, use no more than four (4) direct quotations in your entire research paper. 90% or more of your paper should be written in your own words. The lower the plagiarism score, the more original your paper is, which enhances the overall quality of your writing. Rather than using too many quotations, paraphrase, analyze, compare, contrast, evaluate, critique, and question texts. This is higher-ordered level-3 writing and is much better than providing quotations to back a point.
Should you have any questions regarding the research paper guidelines do not hesitate to contact me through email or office hours. You may consult the Academic Success Center for further support. Make sure that your plagiarism score is no more than 12%. I strictly prohibit the use of AI.

How Social Media Is Ruining Politics
Social Media Are Ruining Political Discourse
After completing the background reading, engage in a discussion that provides your informed opinion on the topic. Make sure to include citations in APA format to your questions/responses to help your classmates develop a deeper understanding of the topic.
ENV.current_user_fullname, on the topic of Public Opinion and The Media – You must cover three of these questions in your original post.
Since the advent of polling, political scientists have found that Americans don’t know much about the details of political issues or even the names of many leading politicians. Education is one distinguishing factor that separates the politically sophisticated from the unsophisticated, but, since education levels have increased over the last half-century, why hasn’t Americans’ knowledge of politics increased? How does democracy survive given such low levels of political knowledge among Americans over time?
Can democracy be sustained when so few people are involved in the political system? Voter turnout in a local election can run less than 10 percent, yet local governments are the ones that affect people more closely daily. Why do more people not vote in America? Explain.
The role of public opinion influences how we view and make our political decision based on media, family, education, religion, race, etc. Please comment on any of those elements and how did it influence your political decision.
Can the average American trust the media, given the amount of “fake news” that is placed on social media, I often wonder if we have a fair chance to understand the candidates and the political process. I will love to hear your comments.

  • Title: A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Coming of Age Rituals: Exploring Gender and Cultural Differences between the Navajo Nation and the Maasai Tribe “Improving Writing Skills: Incorporating Spell and Grammar Check in the Writing Process”

Write a 1500-word essay (no more than 1750 words), on the topic and two cultural groups you have proposed and researched.
Include at least 7 internal citations within your essay (with at least one from each of your sources: your textbook and six outside sources), in support of your explanations. So this means:
Use your Perspectives textbook as ONE of your sources. This will be good for your anthropological concepts!
Use THREE outside sources for the ’historically marginalized group’ within the U.S.
Use THREE outside sources for the ’historically marginalized group’ outside the U.S.
Quotations should be 10 words or less.
    The essay assignment should include:
    1. Introduction: In your opening paragraph, introduce the topic and the two cultures you are studying. Include in-text citations for your sources.
    a. Introduce the topic.
    b. State the names and geographic locations of the two cultural groups you are studying for your cross-cultural analysis.
    c. Explain why you chose the topic and the cultural groups.
    d. Introduce anthropological concepts.
    2. Exploration of the cultures and topic: This is the heart of your essay! It is a detailed discussion of the specific topic you have chosen, in each of the cultures in your research project. Support and document your findings with citations from your sources. Address the following areas in your essay, to share what  you have learned during your research.
    a. Exploration of the cultures and the topic.
    1. Introduce the first culture you have studied for this assignment, and explain how they incorporate aspects of the topic you are studying into their lifeways.
    2. Introduce the second culture you are studying, and explain how they incorporate aspects of the topic you are studying into their lifeways.
    b.  Application of anthropological concepts — these should be woven into your information on each of the cultures (not “tacked on” at the end).
Explain and apply the anthropological concepts you have chosen, and use them to help define and analyze how your topic is incorporated into the lifeways of each culture. For example, how does an understanding of gender shed light on the ways people create and incorporate coming of age ceremonies in these cultures? Be sure to use an in-text citation from your textbook for each concept.
    c. Cross-cultural analysis.
Compare AND contrast the way specific aspects of the topic are incorporated in each culture. For example, each group may have a coming of age ritual, but the rituals will be specific to each culture! Be sure to explain one similarity AND one difference between the two cultures.
    3. Conclusion: Reflect on your research, and think about future research!
    a. Explain one way this cross-cultural analysis has deepened your appreciation for the uniqueness of each culture or the topic in your essay.
    b. Discuss the cultural and anthropological relevance of your research.
    c. Describe one new area you would like to explore in your cross-cultural analysis. Explain how that would broaden your knowledge of the cutures or their lifeways.
    4. Bibliography or References List at the end of the essay.
    Formatting
Your essay should be a minimum of 1500 words (no more than 1,750 words), double-spaced. Include the word count after the last sentence in the paper for only the body of the paper. Don’t count the words in the heading, title or Works Cited/Bibliography. Remember, the assignment is graded for word count, not page length.
Type your full name and “Semester Research Project” at the top of the first page.
Include a Works Cited or Bibliography. Be sure to use full bibliographic references for all sources, including websites, formatted according to the citation style you have chosen.
Use the following links for each of the citations styles (MLA, Chicago, APA):
MLA Style – Excelsior Online Writing Lab
APA Style – Excelsior Online Writing Lab
Chicago Style – Excelsior Online Writing Lab
Remember to proofread and edit for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Use the spell and grammar check!
(I have my proposal essay) This is the feedback I got on it (Good choices for your final essay Michelle. My main comment is that you also needed to share the references for those two concepts you chose (both as in-text references as well as full references in the bibliography), so be sure to add those in your final paper.)

For your essay, please choose Religious Contact theme and use it to analyze change over time in the Global Middle Ages, between 1000–1600. Your essay must use at least one primary source from each of the 3 units —at least 3 primary sources in total. An excellent essay will also use secondary sources and class lectures to build the context for the primary sources and the changes you demonstrate.
