    Collapse All
    Introduction
The financial health of the health care organization depends upon its ability to generate consistent and recurring funds from the services it provides. Collectively referred to as the revenue cycle (RCM), critical stages in this process include:
    Patient registration.
Collection of demographics and payor source.
    Rendering services.
    Documenting services.
    Establishing charges.
    Preparing the claim or bill.
    Submitting the claim.
    Receiving payment.
    Managing accounts receivable.
Decreasing payment delays and lost revenues is a point of interest for many health care managers tasked with oversight of the RCM process. Innovative approaches in technology have assisted with streamlining the RCM process and allowed for automation of many processes, resulting in expedited processing and quick remittance.
Managed care dollars represent a significant portion of all health care organizations’ reimbursements. As a result, health care organizations seek to establish contracts with large managed care organizations (MCOs). Negotiating and securing contracts with MCOs is important for several reasons, including preserving revenues, enhancing patient satisfaction, and generating additional sources of revenue.
All contracts will contain language outlining the administration of the contract along with the payment schedule. While the payment schedule may be seen as the most important element, the terms outlined within the contract are equally as vital to the financial success of the organization.
This assessment focuses on the revenue cycle and how technological innovations have impacted reimbursement for health care organizations. You will take on the role of a patient access supervisor. One of your job functions entails educating new hires about the revenue cycle process.
    Instructions
For this assessment, prepare a 10-slide (excluding Title and Reference slides) PowerPoint presentation, with Speaker Notes, outlining the various steps of the revenue cycle. Use the Revenue Cycle Process Template [PPTX] Download Revenue Cycle Process Template [PPTX]to help you structure your presentation.
For the scenario, imagine you are a patient access supervisor who must educate a group of new hires about the revenue cycle process, including:
    The revenue cycle process.
    Their potential responsibilities.
Why the process is important to a care organization.
Challenges that they may face in their work.
When structuring your presentation, consider the following points and questions to ensure that you are meeting the following scoring guide criteria:
Describe the purpose of each step in the revenue cycle process.
“Describe” means to give an account in words of (someone or something), including all the relevant characteristics, qualities, or events.
The steps within the revenue cycle process include admissions, case management, documentation, coding, billing, and other steps.
Describe key responsibilities of individuals who work in the revenue cycle process.
Describe key components (such as verifying insurance, financial counseling, coding of documented services provided, and other components) and who is responsible (individuals such as coders, registration clerks, and others).
Describe the consequences to the organization of failing to fulfill key responsibilities in the revenue cycle process.
Describe additional steps and challenges in the revenue cycle process when working with an uninsured patient.
Provide information for the new staff regarding options available for the uninsured.
Identify any additional steps throughout the revenue cycle one must be aware of when working with an uninsured patient.
Identify the challenges that exist for the revenue cycle due to the delivery of uncompensated care.
Adhere to the rules of grammar, usage, and mechanics.
“Grammar” refers to the basic rules for how sentences are constructed and how words combine to make sentences (for example, word order, case, and tense).
“Usage” refers to correct word choice and phrasing, particularly with regard to the meanings of words and phrases.
“Mechanics” refers to correct use of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
With the exception of the title slide and the reference slide, each slide should contain detailed speaking notes.
Apply APA formatting to in-text citations and references.
Provide in-text citations within the speaking notes, just like you would in a paper, to show where the information was obtained.
Be sure to include an APA-formatted Reference slide at the end of the presentation.

  • “Optimizing Patient Flow in a Hospital: Strategies for Improving Operational Efficiency and Quality of Care”

Optimizing Patient Flow in a Hospital
    Background:
You are a healthcare administrator at Amora General hospital experiencing challenges with patient flow. Despite having adequate resources and skilled staff, the hospital is facing issues such as long wait times in the emergency department, delayed admissions, and inefficient discharge processes. These bottlenecks are affecting patient satisfaction, staff morale, and overall operational efficiency.
Senior leadership asked you to provide more detailed information on how formula a plan to solve these issues. Prepare a PowerPoint presentation for your next meeting with leadership to provide this information. After conducting a review of the literature, conduct a thorough analysis the crucial steps in developing a strategic plan to improve patient flow. Be sure to focus on the healthcare field and internal and external environments when providing examples to illustrate your points.
Because wait times, cancellations, and delays are so frequent in the healthcare industry, both patients and caregivers come to accept waiting as an unfortunate but necessary aspect of receiving care. However this chronic practice should be addressed and resolved, it leads to raise the expense of the hospital and lower the standard of care. In order to visit every patient who is waiting for treatment, medical professionals could have to work overtime and extra shifts, which would severely strain their finances.
Conduct a research in efforts to optimize patient flow, addressing operational efficiency, identify bottlenecks, regulatory compliance, financial management, ethical dilemmas, and develop strategies to optimize patient flow while maintaining high-quality care delivery.
    Presentation Framework:
    Facility Assessment:
Identify possible key areas of inefficiency, such as long wait times, bed shortages, delays in diagnostic tests, and discharge delays.
    Stakeholder Interactions:
Identify key stakeholders, such as clinical staff, administrative personnel, and patient representatives that are involved in patient flow interactions
    Root Cause Analysis:
Conduct root cause analysis to determine what could be underlying factors contributing to patient flow inefficiencies.
    Regulatory Compliance
Ensuring optimization efforts comply with ACA, CMS, and state regulations to maintain compliance
    Healthcare Finance
Cost analysis associated with inefficiencies in patient flow.
Revenue from value based reimbursement related with patient satisfaction
    Ethical Dilemmas
Potential conflicts between speed and quality of care.
How these dilemmas were resolved or managed.
    Strategic Interventions:
Develop strategic interventions to address identified bottlenecks and improve patient flow.

  • “Exploring Quantitative Research: Formulating a Research Question and Identifying Methodologies and Data Collection Tools” Title: “Impact of Health Care Setting on Data Collection Tools and Strategies for a Research Project” Introduction In any research project, the choice of data collection tools and strategies is crucial to the success of the study. These tools and strategies are

The quantitative method is the original scientific method. Quantitative research methods can be subdivided by various designs that researchers use to answer their research questions. In fact, the wording of the research question must match the methodology and may contain the words that indicate the design. Quantitative research identifies what happened, but not why it happened. It identifies causation or relationships.
The relationships in a quantitative research study are similar to those used for a qualitative design. There is still a relationship between the theory, problem, purpose and, now, the research questions, hypotheses, and design. This week, you will continue to expand your understanding of this framework by analyzing and evaluating research questions and hypotheses in quantitative studies. You will also learn about various quantitative research designs that researchers use to answer their research questions.
In addition, you will continue to analyze the interrelated elements of a research study, making the connection among theory, problem, and purpose, and research questions, hypotheses, and design.
For this assessment it is suggested that you build upon the work that you did in the Research Problem and Purpose Statements assessment.
The assessment has two distinct parts:
    Part 1: Quantitative Research Question
    Relevant Scoring Guide Criteria:
Formulate a quantitative research question and associated hypothesis.
Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and respectful of the diversity, dignity, and integrity of others and is consistent with expectations for health care professionals.
For this section, you will formulate a research question that is appropriate for a research project that will use quantitative methodologies.
Remember the HAC that you used in your Research Problem and Purpose Statements assessment. Additionally, your research question should align to the problem and purpose statements that you developed at that time.
Keep in mind that a well-written research question should be a single statement.
When examining or creating quantitative research questions, the following checklist may be useful:
    Quantitative Research Question Checklist
Does the purpose statement fit logically with the problem statement? Are there similar words, or does it seem to address a different topic?
Based on the problem statement, do the research questions align with the method and design of the study? Do questions seek to describe responses to the variables described in the study?
Do the questions include words like compare, correlate, or other words that indicate a quantitative study?
Do the questions include identification of the independent and dependent variables?
Does the hypothesis fit with the research questions?
Do the questions and hypothesis identify the participants for the research study?
Do the questions and hypothesis specify the participants and the research site?
Part 2: Quantitative Methods and Data Collection
    Relevant Scoring Guide Criteria:
Identify relevant quantitative methodologies that will support answering a research question.
Describe quantitative data collection tools or strategies that are appropriate for answering a research question.
Explain the importance of methodologically relevant data collection to a research plan as a whole.
Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and respectful of the diversity, dignity, and integrity of others and is consistent with expectations for health care professionals.
For this section, you will draw upon your readings about quantitative methods and data collection to first identify specific quantitative methodologies that will enable you to answer your research questions. You will also discuss specific quantitative data collection tools or strategies that are appropriate for this purpose. Questions to consider when looking for strategies and tools include:
What is your research question specifically trying to answer?
How does the specific HAC impact the types of tools and strategies that would work best?
How does the health care setting that the research project will be occurring in impact the types of tools and strategies that would work best?
Lastly, this section should include a review of why it is important to a potential research plan as a whole to ensure that your data collection plan is relevant to your chosen methodology.
This section should be 2–5 pages in length, depending on the level of detail required to fully present your methodologies and data collection tools and strategies.

  • “Group Charter and Weekly Leadership Schedule”

URGENT NOTE: YOU WILL DO THIS AS INDIVIDUAL, NOT AS GROUP.
To work in groups this semester, we need to establish some group rules of conduct in a “group charter” document, as well as set the schedule regarding who will lead the submission of group work assignments due each week.
    PREP: Revisit Group Introductions
Double-check you’ve read the intro posts from each of your groupmates. Because some people post earlier and some added the class later, take a minute to confirm who is in your group and what they posted about themselves. This is your chance to ask the things that become awkward the longer you wait, like:  “how should I pronounce your name? wow, what is it like working in the [RPAC, Cancer Center, library] at OSU or outside of OSU and how are you holding up? wait, are you the Smith/Chaudhari/etc. my cousin dated in high school?”
    1. Share your group document
Click on the “Group charter and weekly leadership assignment” link below to download a Word document for you to complete. Use the discussion board to decide who will lead this setup work; leading for this week includes sharing the document with all group members on a collaborative platform like Google Docs. As each of you accesses the document shared by this week’s leader, add your name to the header as a participant to indicate you have checked in.
    HRS2530_ASSIGN1_Group Charter.docxDownload HRS2530_ASSIGN1_Group Charter.docx
    2. Create a group charter
In order for each of us to learn and share in a supportive group environment, it’s important to have a set of shared rules that govern how we interact. (Especially online.) As a group, use the discussion board, or a group communication platform of the group’s choice, to decide on answers to the highlighted portions of the charter and sign off on the end results. NOTE: Check out the grading rubric below to plan how you can get full marks for this assignment! No header,  signatures, claiming of sections, spell check, etc,…no points!
    3. Create a group leader schedule
Please fill in this group leader schedule. Volunteer yourselves (and not others) for at least one week.
Once these steps are done, and before the due date, the weekly leader must upload the completed and signed document here.

  • Title: Process Improvement in Patient Check-In for Surgical Procedures: A Value Stream Mapping and Lean Principles Approach

Instructions for individual written assignment: VSM and Process Flow
Select a current process or system in healthcare (e.g. patient check-in for a surgical procedure, consent forms for admission into a hospital, physician screening in an ER, etc.) environment that you identify as needing improvement to improve flow and reduce waste. Define the process and the population served; detail why the area is an important area to focus your process improvement efforts; describe how many patients/customers are served on a daily basis, who provides the services, hours of operation for the process, etc.
Draw a value stream map (VSM) for the process identified including time stamps for each step in the process. Calculate cycle time, idle time, throughput time, takt time, and percent value added in the process.
Describe in detail the muda (or areas of waste) in the system (e.g. DOWNTIME) you’ve identified in the system or process.
Use Lean principles to describe the process improvement you would make to remove non-value-added activities and decreases the throughput time for the patient. Be specific with the principles you would use and why.
Now that you have described what tools you would use to improve the system or process and how, construct an updated VSM to highlight the new process including updated calculations on cycle time, throughput time, takt time, and percent value added in the process. Describe what immediate changes you intend to see (e.g. increase in patient satisfaction, provider satisfaction, reduction in inventory waste, etc.).
