“Interdisciplinary Approaches to Addressing Community and Occupational Issues: A Conceptual Framework for Policy Creation”
Application of Interdisciplinary Studies in Creating Policy
In Module 3, you will develop a conceptual framework that explains the phenomena creating one of the issues that you will focus on for your Portfolio Project.
Interdisciplinary thought is based on frameworks that bring together theories in an effort to provide unique insight on the climate and causes of problems in the world. Choose one of the community- or occupation-based issues that you wrote about in Modules 1 and 2, and bringing in theories from your degree work or from the field of interdisciplinary studies, explain what you believe to be the reasons behind the issue.
For help with theories, try these resources:

And, finally, go to CSU Global Library’s SAGE Research Methods databaseLinks to an external site. and search for “theories:”
For example, if you selected local homelessness, explain how or why an interdisciplinary solution could be beneficial for solving the homeless problem in your environment or community. Be sure to identify an interdisciplinary theory that you would expect to apply in each solution.
Your paper will be at least three pages long and will include these elements:
Introduction and conclusion.
Exploration of the reasons behind your chosen issue, combining at least three theories to create a conceptual framework that supports your causal analysis.
Definition and overview of how interdisciplinary theories can be helpful in finding a solution for the problem in your occupation or community that you chose.
At least two peer-reviewed references from the CSU Global LibraryLinks to an external site..
The assignment should follow APA guidelines and conform to CSU Global Writing CenterLinks to an external site..

Title: “The Impact of Economics, Culture, Ethics, and Religion on U.S. Healthcare and the Case for a Holistic Approach”
Directions:
The U.S. spends the most on healthcare of all the wealthy nations, yet has the worst overall healthcare outcomes. Many of the higher-ranking countries tend to focus more on holistic health—treating the patient’s mind, body and spirit.
In your initial posting, analyze why the U.S. ranks so low compared to other countries. Explain how economics, culture, ethics, and religion impact U.S. healthcare from a patient perspective and from a healthcare organization perspective. Discuss whether you feel the U.S. should take a more holistic approach. -
“The Missing Needle Protector: Applying Ethical Principles in a Challenging Health Care Dilemma” Title: Ethical Principles in Healthcare: A Case Study Analysis
The Missing Needle Protector – Ethical Case Studies
E. L. Straight is director of clinical services at Hopewell Hospital. As in many hospitals, a few physicians provide care that is acceptable, but not of very high quality; they tend to make more mistakes than the others and have a higher incidence of patients going “sour.” Since Straight took the position 2 years ago, new programs have been developed and things seem to be getting better in terms of quality.
Dr. Cutrite has practiced at Hopewell for longer than anyone can remember. Although once a brilliant general surgeon, he has slipped physically and mentally over the years, and Straight is contemplating taking steps to recommend a reduction in his privileges. However, the process is not complete, and Cutrite continues to perform a full range of procedures.
The operating room supervisor appeared at Straight’s office one Monday afternoon. “We’ve got a problem,” she said, somewhat nonchalantly, but with a hint of disgust. “ I’m almost sure we left a plastic needle protector from a disposable syringe in a patient’s belly, a Mrs. Jameson. You know, the protectors with the red–pink color. They’d be almost impossible to see if they were in a wound.”
“Where did it come from?” asked Straight.
“I’m not absolutely sure,” answered the supervisor. “All I know is that the syringe was among items in a used surgical pack when we did the count.” She went on to describe the safeguards of counts and records. The discrepancy was noted when records were reconciled at the end of the week. A surgical pack was shown as having a syringe, that was not supposed to be there. When the scrub nurse working with Cutrite was questioned, she remembered that he had used a syringe, but, when it was included in the count at the conclusion of surgery, she didn’t think about the protective sheath, which must have been on it.
“Let’s get Mrs. Jameson back into surgery.” said Straight. “We’ll tell her it’s necessary to check her incision and deep sutures. She’ll never know we’re really looking for the needle cover.”
“Too late,” responded the supervisor, “she went home day before yesterday.”
Oh, oh, thought Straight. Now what to do? “Have you talked to Dr. Cutrite?”
The supervisor nodded affirmatively. “He won’t consider telling Mrs. Jameson there might be a problem and calling her back to the hospital,” she said. “And he warned us not to do anything either,” she added. “Dr. Cutrite claims it cannot possibly hurt her. Except for a little discomfort, she’ll never know it’s there.”
Straight called the chief of surgery and asked s hypothetical question about the consequences of leaving a small plastic cap in a patient’s belly. The chief knew something was amiss but didn’t pursue it. He simply replied there would likely be occasional discomfort, but probably no life–threatening consequences from leaving it in. “Although,” he added, “one never knows.”
Straight liked working at Hopewell Hospital and didn’t relish crossing swords with Cutrite, who, although declining clinically, was politically very powerful. Straight had refrained from fingernail biting for years, but that old habit was suddenly overwhelming.
Applying Ethical Principles
Prepare
For this assignment, you will apply the four ethical principles to your selected ethical health care dilemma. Consider the ethical dilemma the health care professional is faced with in your selected case study. In addition to the week’s readings, use the Capella library to locate at least one academic peer-reviewed journal article you can use to support your analysis of the situation.
If you have not yet done so, use the Ethical Case Studies interactive to select a case study. Specifically, identify which case study you selected and briefly summarize the facts surrounding the case study. Then, use the four core principles that health care professionals need to know and honor when helping patients:
Autonomy: To honor the patient’s right to make their own decisions.
Beneficence: To help the patient advance their own good.
Nonmaleficence: To do no harm.
Justice: To be fair and treat like cases alike, which will be used to inform your work.
Note: The case study may not supply all the information you may need. In such cases, you should consider a variety of possibilities and infer potential conclusions. Please be sure to identify any speculations that you make.

Proposal for Data Compatibility in Assessing Quality Measures in Healthcare Introduction The purpose of this proposal is to outline the process for collecting and analyzing quality measures data in the healthcare setting. This proposal will focus on data compatibility, specifically how to ensure that Ensuring Data Compatibility and Quality in HIEs and National Databases Introduction In today’s digital age, the use of health information exchanges (HIEs) and national databases has become increasingly prevalent in healthcare. These systems allow for the sharing
Instructions
Step One: Preparation
Locate data related to quality measures relevant to your topic from one or more of these websites:
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. (n.d.). https://www.ahrq.gov/
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (n.d.). https://www.cdc.gov/
The Joint Commission. (n.d.). https://www.jointcommission.org/
NCQA. (n.d.). https://www.ncqa.org/
Occupational Safety and Health Administration. (n.d.). https://www.osha.gov/index.html
Any other site that contains national or state health care quality measures.
Step Two: Data Collection
Using the Data Collection Spreadsheet Guide [XLSX] Download Data Collection Spreadsheet Guide [XLSX]as an example, ;create a spreadsheet containing three tabs: Dashboard Tracking, Data Collection, and Trending.
On the first tab, Dashboard Tracking, draw from the information you gathered in Step One as part of your preparation for this assessment:
Identify the specific benchmark data you will compare with your office data. Remember it is up to you to establish your benchmarks.
Organize or create a spreadsheet to display the totals, percentages, averages, and so on of your office data and of the national or state data you will be using for comparison. Note: Your Office Data column will be blank because you are not collecting any office data. This is only a proposal to do an information review of the quality of care provided by the physician group. Data does, however, need to appear in the Benchmark (national/state) data column.
Include at least one comparison graph of your choice on this tab.
On the second tab, Data Collection, draw from the information you gathered in Step One as part of your preparation for this assessment:
Create a form you will use to collect specific data from the patients’ records.
Include a row for each patient.
Provide a column for each data collection point (quality measure) you will be comparing.
Note: The information on this page is totaled, averaged, et cetera, with the results linked to the first tab.
To create your third tab, Trends, you will need to do some additional research. Identify national benchmarks for the condition you have chosen that could be compared to your office data. For example, if the trend in your office is that you are seeing more patients with asthma, but the national trend is decreasing, you have discovered a discrepancy that needs to be investigated.
To perform your analysis:
Visit one or more of the following websites containing national data:
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. (n.d.). Healthcare cost and utilization project. https://hcupnet.ahrq.gov/#setup
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (n.d.). CDC WONDER. https://wonder.cdc.gov/WelcomeT.html
Any other site that contains national or state health care data.
Locate and analyze statistical data relevant to the selected condition.
Examine trends:
What other meaningful trends exist? For example, consider the number of new cases, increases or decreases of cases within a specific age range or location, et cetera.
How do the national and state trends compare?
Is the national trend increasing or decreasing?
What is the percentage of cases who expire from the disease?
Identify the trending of one statistical result relating to the condition you selected over the last 5–10 years.
Create a line graph on the third tab of your spreadsheet, Trends, that illustrates the national and/or state trending of the disease you selected over the past 5–10 years.
Note: Remember you have not collected your office data yet for comparison purposes. You could add that data at a later time.
Step 3: Data Compatibility
Write a short section to add to the proposal you will complete in Assessment 3. Be sure this section of your proposal includes all of the following headings and your narrative addresses each of the bullet points.
Introduction
Provide a brief 1–2 sentence, high-level summary explaining data compatibility.
Data Compatibility
Assess the compatibility of the data:
How can you ensure data from multiple sources is compatible?
How do you know the data you are using for comparison is compatible with your office data?
What challenges are associated with data standardization? We do not want to compare apples with oranges. You want to be sure data from multiple sources:
Represents the same condition.
Uses similar statistical analysis.
And so on.
Effects of Health Information Quality on the HIE
Explain the difference between an HIE and a national database.
Explain what problems can develop if facilities submit incomplete or inaccurate information to an HIE.
Explain what problems can develop if facilities submit incomplete or inaccurate information to a national database.
Explain how incomplete or inaccurate data may affect your proposal.
Conclusion
Briefly reinforce your paper’s main points.
Additional Requirements
Your assessment should meet the following requirements:
Excel spreadsheet: Your spreadsheet must contain three tabs, be organized, contain appropriate graphs, and have correct spelling.
Written communication: Your paper needs to be clear and well organized, with correct spelling, grammar, and syntax, to support orderly exposition of content.
Title page: Develop a descriptive title of approximately 5–15 words. It should stir interest yet maintain professional decorum.
References: Include a minimum of two citations of peer-reviewed sources in current APA format.
Length: 1–3 typed, double-spaced content pages, not including the title page and references page.
Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point. -

Healthcare issues turn into law in many ways. Usually, a new debate in healthcare surfaces and then the controversy leads to the formation of a law. But how exactly does this happen? Sometimes a health issue is supported by a lobby group. Some issues start as a means to correct problems in patient care. Some health laws are created from public advocacy.
Regardless, should these current approaches in place today be considered “best practice”? Defend your yes/no stance. Share your thoughts on how healthcare issues become law. Try to point to a specific example. Do you approve of this process? Evaluate how this plan can be improved, and support with specific examples. Please explain -
