  • “Combatting Childhood Obesity: Developing Policies for a Healthier Generation”

    HEALTH POLICY PROJECT
    Introduction
    Health
    policies deal with real-life problems.
After taking this class, the student should be more equipped to work with
health policies on any level, including both the clinical and administrative
side of health care.  There are many ways to approach policymaking from
different angles within the context of your career in health.
    Assignment
    You
are the top policy executive of a community health organization seeking to
create a health policy to deal with a specific critical health issue in your
community.  Pick a major health issue to research and propose policies to be implemented on the health
issue in your organization. The entire effort culminates in a DB presentation
and a written paper with a comprehensive policy brief.  The project should specifically focus on the social,
legal, and political contexts in which health care organization exists and
adapts, with emphasis on the U.S. system.  One goal of this class is to
help students understand how communities and providers can participate in
developing and implementing policies on institutional, local, state, and
    federal levels.
    The project focuses on
different factors in the spectrum of disease prevention, i.e., influencing government
policy and legislation, changing your organizations practices, fostering
coalitions and networks with other organizations, educating providers as well
as promoting community and individual education and strengthening individual
knowledge and skills. Each student will present a brief discussion in the DB for
the class discussion on the elements selected for their health issue.  Each DB presentation will include an overview
of the health issue in their population, include relevant data, culminating in
development of a working policy to guide the organization.  Students will provide feedback to their
    classmates on their project.
    Each student will also prepare
a written synopsis of their project. All citations must be in APA format for
the presentation, policy and individual paper.
For full credit the individual student synopsis must be complete within
the outline below, 12 TMS Font with 1 inch margins.  References are included on a separate page.

    CONCLUSION
The topic I chose for my policy proposal is childhood obesity. I will discuss environmental factors such as not having access to playgrounds in low-income areas. Psychological effect on children from bullying and low esteem. Childhood obesity can have long lasting health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and joint issues. Also, the long-term effect on a child will be chronic diseases that could shorten their life expectancy. Ther should be policies in place to help protect our children from becoming obese.

  • “Exploring Medical Office Scheduling Systems: An Interview Study”

Contact a medical office that uses a medical office scheduling system. Ideally, the medical office should be in your local area. However, if you know someone in another city or state who works in a medical office, you may interview outside of your local area over the phone or computer.
    a. The best way to receive a response is by calling the practice or going in person to request an interview. It is common for a busy medical office to respond to emails slowly. In addition, calling/going in is more personal and the medical office will be less likely to say no when there is direct contact.
    b. When you call or go in, it is best to ask to speak to the office manager or the person who schedules appointments. The office manager is the employee who is most likely to make a decision about granting the interview and the scheduler will be the person who uses the electronic health record system the most.
    c. If a medical office has objections to granting the interview, assure them that:
    i. There are no patient-specific questions; therefore, HIPAA regulations will not be violated in any way.
ii. You will print out a copy of the questions and present them to the office manager or person you are interviewing so they can be certain they will not be asked to violate regulations in any way.
iii. The interview includes only 19 questions and should only take 20 minutes at the most. If there is still hesitation or lack of time on the medical office’s part at that time, you can offer to send the questions to the person being interviewed via email. However, this should be used as a last resort.
iv. The interview will only be shared with the instructor. If a practice is hesitant about releasing “private” information about the practice and how it operates, only 2 people will see the interview—you and the instructor.
    v. The interview is an assignment for a course that is part of an associates’ degree at Liberty University. Liberty University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. (In the event that the medical office requests a written letter from the school/instructor as verification, contact your instructor and he/she will be happy to provide one for you.)
    2. Complete the Interview Question Form in its entirety.
    a. Two interviews with two different medical offices are required.
    b. Type the answers to the questions for each interview on the interview question form.
    c. Complete the student discussion on the Interview Question Form after each interview. Each student discussion must be at least 350 words each and discuss what you have learned, as well as some practical takeaways for you as a potential employee in a medical office.
    d. This assignment must use current APA format. You will include a reference page at the end of your Interview Question Form to reference your interviews. You are to verify the information shared by the person you interviewed. For example: if the person you interviewed shared some advantages/disadvantages about the software they use in the office, you are to look up the software, verify those advantages/disadvantages, and cite it in current APA format on the reference page.

  • Onboarding Timeline and Checklist for New Employees

In your table, including when during the employee’s employment, each specific activity should occur, who is responsible for conducting that activity, and why you chose that activity as a part of your process. Your table should be prepared in a format that can be used as both a description of the process as well as a checklist that an HR staffer can use to track the progress of an employee’s onboarding.
Your onboarding timeline must include steps that ensure:
The employees understand the policies and procedures of the organization.
    They understand their job duties.
They understand what’s expected of them in terms of job performance.

  • “Improving Quality of Care for Patients with Diabetes: A Documentation Review Proposal for a Physician Group” Introduction Identify the disease or condition from the following list for which you will review the quality of care: Diabetes Explain the reasons for Title: “Managing Health Information: A Proposal for Documentation Review and Legal Considerations”

Your physician group is no different than other organizations. It wants to find ways to improve the quality of care it provides to patients. This, in turn, helps the physician group remain profitable and stay in business. As a result, the senior leaders of your physician group have asked you to provide a documentation review of the quality of care provided by the office. As the office manager, you are the one responsible for the management of the health information within the office and the review of information to determine whether providers met quality of care standards. Determining this will require you to:
Identify a disease or condition served by the physician group.
Determine what patient information is needed and where to retrieve it.
Compare your overall office data to the national benchmarks.
Typically, in the workplace, the physician group’s specialty area (cancer, diabetes, dermatology, et cetera) would dictate the disease or condition for which you would be collecting information. For the purpose of this assessment, however, you may select the disease or condition that interests you from this list:
    Asthma.
    Diabetes.
    Myocardial infarction.
    HIV/AIDS.
    Cancer.
Select the disease or condition that is important to you and that you want to study. Perhaps you have the disease or condition. Perhaps a family member or friend does. Remember you will be working with this condition in the remaining course assessments.
Now that you have determined the disease or condition you are going to study, you will need to begin collecting protected health information (PHI) for the patients treated by your physician group who have the condition you are studying. You will need to consider carefully the privacy, security, and confidentiality of the information within the patients’ office records. Determining how you, as the office manager, will maintain data security is a key aspect of your work. You are responsible for knowing and understanding the types of documentation, applications, and information systems used within and outside of the office. All information moves through a life cycle from creation to destruction. Regulations, policies, and procedures strictly control this ongoing process. The office manager needs to know this life cycle and where to locate information when it is needed.
For this assessment, you will write a section of a proposal about how the documentation on previous patient care will be retrieved, from where it will be retrieved, and how that data will be kept secure during retrieval and review. Remember that you are focusing on retrieving and analyzing existing documentation within the office.
For this section of your proposal:
Identify the disease or condition and the population that will be the focus of your study.
Explain your plan to manage this information from collection to storage to destruction.
Identify legal considerations and a plan for compliance for the PHI you are collecting.
In later assessments in this course, you will continue on with your proposal and begin to plan for how you will compare the office data you have collected to the national benchmarks. Remember: You will not be able to actually do this comparison. You are simply preparing a proposal for senior leaders about how you would go about performing this work.
Please read the scoring guide for this assessment to better understand the performance levels relating to each criterion on which you will be evaluated.
You will not be writing the entire proposal for this assessment; only parts of it. You will add to your proposal in later assessments and complete it in Assessment 3. Be sure this part of your proposal includes all of the following headings, and your narrative addresses each of the bullet points:
    Introduction
Identify the disease or condition from the following list for which you will review the quality of care:
    Asthma.
    Diabetes.
    Myocardial infarction.
    HIV/AIDS.
    Cancer.
Explain the reasons for your choice.
    Information Collection
    Complete the following:
Determine the patient population to be reviewed.
Evaluate which information system or systems best provide the needed information.
Determine the specific documentation you are looking for. Explicitly state the reasons for each and all of your choices. Be sure to answer all of the following questions in your narrative:
Do you want to review information only from your office? Or do you also want to review information for hospital admission and/or emergency room visits?
Do you wish to review all patients who have ever been treated for the selected condition? Or only those treated within a specific time frame? Will you only review patients within certain demographic parameters?
What type of documentation do you want to review? This may include:
    History and physical (H&P).
    Discharge summary.
    Progress notes.
    Labs.
    Radiology.
    Others.
Identify where you are going to find the information you need. Which information system or systems would be best to use, and what information can you collect from each system? Possibilities include:
    Pharmacy.
    Point of care (POC).
    Results management.
    Computerized physician order entry (CPOE).
Determine the type of system or systems (financial, administrative, clinical, et cetera) you would use.
    Information Life Cycle
    Complete the following:
Describe how you plan to manage this information from collection to destruction. Be sure to address all of these questions in your narrative:
How will the information be collected and documented? By whom? In what context?
How will the information be stored?
How will you control access to the information?
How can you ensure the documentation meets interoperability standards?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of integrating your office information with an HIE?
What challenges exist regarding the standardization of health information?
When and how will the information be destroyed?
    Legal Considerations
    Complete the following:
Differentiate between the legal aspects of health information confidentiality, privacy, and security, as it applies to your proposal.
Apply laws governing health information confidentiality, privacy, and security.
Determine whether the information you are retrieving requires the use of PHI.
    If not, why not?
If so, summarize how the PHI will be used.
Plan for how the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) will impact health care personnel, policies, and procedures in your proposal.
    Conclusion
Briefly summarize the value of the documentation review you are proposing to be performed.
