  • “Exploring the Gendered Dynamics of Peace and War: Women’s Role, Vulnerability, and Empowerment”

Is peace “feminine”? Is war “masculine”?
What do women bring to the peace table? Do they bring something different from men, and, if so, why?
Why have women been under-represented in the peacemaking process in most historical settings
Who writes history? Why was the role played by the women of Liberia in the peace process largely ignored by mainstream chroniclers of the events?
How did the women in the film use their bodies and sexuality as tools in the peacemaking process?
Are women and children affected differently by war than men? Why are they particularly vulnerable in times of war?
What conditions of modern warfare have led to the increase in the recruitment of child soldiers?
Who should be held accountable for human rights violations against women and children in times of war?
What are the implications of the success of the Liberian women’s movement for peace-making in other parts of the world?
What are some of the ways women in wealthy nations can come together to support and empower women in poor nations to fight violence in their communities, and to enhance the recognition of their fundamental human rights in those places? Is it possible to do so in ways that are not ethnocentric and that truly empower women?
What is a quota system within a government? Does the United States have one?
In regards to the SDG Tracker, Globally, how are doing? What three examples of progress resonated with you most?

  • “Performing Gender: Exploring Gender Performativity Through Personal Experiences and Interviews with Others”

In “Imitation and Gender Insubordination,” Judith Butler argues that gender does the same thing. Doing femininity is what makes feminine gender exist. We perform gender, but it also comes into existence at the moment we do it.
Do you agree? Can you choose your gender? Is it all choice, only some, or not a choice to you at all? Does Butler’s theory of gender as performative explain how gender works in “Paris is Burning?” Does Butler leave things out she should have in her theory?
Is it possible to talk about gender without also talking about class or race at the same time? Are there kinds of white femininity that are different from Black femininities? Latina femininities? Asian femininities? Jewish femininities? Muslim femininities? Native American femininities? South Asian femininities? Are there higher and lower class versions of these? Does “Paris is Burning” suggest there is a range of femininities?
    What about masculinities?
Discussion Post: PERFORMING GENDER(S)– You can do this either individually or in a group–just make sure you use Judith Butler, Paris is Burning, or both to talk about what you are doing. After you have considered the questions above, write a post about gender and performativity.
    1. You can dress as a gender that is different from the one you think you have, then describe what you did and why. What is your “opposite” gender, or what is “another” gender, one different from yours? What is your “real” or “natural” gender? Do you ever play around with gender? Describe this in your post, and talk about how other people reacted to you. Remember to connect it to Paris is Burning or Judith Butler.
    2. As part of this, you can make a video, post it to You Tube, and post the link. Make sure it is semi-private unless you want the whole world to see it. Be sure to talk about it in your post, though. You can also take a gender photo and put it on Instagram, then describe it your post. You can also do these things with another person. Talk about comments if you get them. Be sure to relate it to Butler, Paris is Burning, or both, and talk about reactions.
    3. You can interview people, alone or in a group, about their gender. You can write about this, summarize their reactions, film them talking (with their permission), take pictures, etc. Just make sure you use Judith Butler, Paris is Burning, or both to talk about what you are doing. If you decide to film people and post it to a site, make sure you have their permission, and keep it as private as possible–use a private or semi-private link on you tube, for example.

  • “Challenging the Dominant Narrative: Examining the Role of Social Media in Shaping Public Opinion on Climate Change”

For this assignment, write a research
essay in which you make a strong argument about an issue related to our course
inquiry. This research essay is an opportunity for you to contribute to the
academic and/or public conversations that surround your topic within our
broader field of inquiry. You should focus on a specific issue and position
yourself within a specific debate, either a debate we have examined this
semester or a related debate that you have discovered in your research. Your
argument should be tailored to a specific audience, accounting for their
    previous knowledge, biases, and expectations.
The research essay should be organized
with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction should
introduce the reader to the conversation that you are entering and explain the
stakes of your project. It should also provide context, explain the methodology
you used in your research, and articulate a strong thesis statement. The body
of your essay should summarize and synthesize the sources that you have
identified in your research. You should make explicit connections between your
sources and position yourself in relation to them. The body of a research essay
often begins with a brief literature review and then moves to the analysis of
specific evidence. The conclusion should weave together the threads of your
argument, acknowledge the limitations of your project, and suggest avenues for
    further research.
Your research essay should be 10-pages
long and use standard MLA-style to cite your sources and format your document:
typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12-point Times font, etc. You should
also include an MLA-style Works Cited page that lists all of the sources cited
    in your essay.

  • The Dichotomy of Women in Egyptian Society: An Analysis of Feminism in Nawal el Saadawi’s Woman at Point Zero

Woman at Point Zero – Feminism Paper
Paper: In literature, a common mantra is write what you know, and quite often, authors do in fact create fiction using their own life experiences. This sort of writing can be a boon for the historian in that it provides a window of analysis into the mindset of a member of the society that you are studying. Though Woman at Point Zero is a piece of fiction, it is based on an experience that the author, Nawal el Saadawi, had when she worked for the Egyptian government as a psychiatric doctor. Through the fictionalization of that experience the reader is introduced to the prisoner Firdaus. Through Firdaus the concept of feminism as it was expressed in Egypt in the 1970s is presented. Using the novel, focus on what the existence of the prostitute/good wife, whore/virgin dichotomy says about the status and condition of women in this society. In your analysis, examine the general assumptions about men’s and women’s power that Firdaus fights against. To help with this, think about how, according to both society in general and Firdaus in particular, what a prostitute, slut, whore, and “ruined woman” would be defined as. You can also examine the correlations that are drawn between woman as a prostitute and woman as a wife and woman as a slave. As you conclude, focus on how this novel presents and understands feminism.
Nuts and Bolts of Paper: This is an analytical paper, not an opinion-based one. Do not use first person and do not simply tell me about what happens in the novel. Start with a thesis, an argument, about what you are trying to prove about Egyptian feminism, and then use the novel to support this argument. Only papers submitted through the course Canvas site will be accepted. Papers must be a minimum of 1200 words long, please do not exceed 1500 words. They should be double-spaced, using standard margins, and Times New Roman Font, size 12, or its equivalent. Correct spelling and the proper use of the English language is required. I will be grading you on content, spelling and grammar. This is a scholarly paper, so do NOT use slang, contractions, or first person. At the top of your paper, include your name and an accurate word count, failure to do so will result in a FULL LETTER GRADE deduction. Your paper must be named in the following manner: Last Name_First Name.doc
You may NOT use the internet to help write this paper. Using the internet will result in a grade of 0.

  • “Exploring the Current Research on [Topic]: A Literature Review”

For this assignment, write a literature
review in which you summarize, analyze, and synthesize at least six sources
that you have located in your independent research about your topic. You may
include additional sources from project one as well, if appropriate. At least four
of these sources must be academic: peer-reviewed journal articles, books from
an academic press, published reports, etc.
At this point in the semester, you
should have a sizeable number of sources (books, articles, websites, videos,
audio clips, etc.) about your topic. Your task in this assignment is to narrow
your pool of sources and uncover the patterns of ideas contained in these
sources. What are the types of questions that these authors ask, how do they
answer those questions, what kinds of evidence do they use, and are there
problems that remain unresolved in the existing research? To answer these
questions, you will first need to construct a clear outline that maps out the
ideas explored by each author. This will then allow you to determine the
    structure for your literature review.
    The literature review should be
organized as an essay with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Your
introduction should define your topic, explain your organizational strategy
(how you selected and categorized the sources), and offers a thesis about what
the connections between your sources and their relationship to your topic. The
body paragraphs should summarize and synthesize your sources and make
connections between them based topics, arguments, methodologies, evidence, etc.
Finally, your conclusion should offer an evaluation of the sources, identify
gaps in the research, and explain how you plan to contribute to the
    conversation with your research project.
    Your literature review should be
3-pages long and use standard MLA-style to cite your sources and format your
document: typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12-point Times font, etc. You
should also include an MLA-style Works Cited page that lists all of the sources
    discussed in your literature review.

  • “Examining the Habitus of the Poor: An Analysis of Capital and Social Reproduction in the Poor Kids Video”

Towards these ends, define, describe and illustrate each of the types of capital (financial, social, cultural), using explicit examples from the Poor Kids video to arrive at an accurate description of the habitus of the poor families depicted in the video. Like for the rich, it is the family unit that will serve as the financial capital for those depicted in the video so detail the types of work that the families are engaged. Also, detail the cultural capital and social capital reflected in the video. Keep in mind, while there are differences between the families, the have lots in common in that they share a common social class. Integrate what Doob says about this social class into your paper and apply it appropriately to your examples. What does Doob say about the poor and education? about the jobs poor engage in? etc. Make sure to put the page number from which you derived this information. Make sure you have specific examples in your paper. Do not assume I have watched the video. Your friends, family, etc. should be able to read your paper without having watched the video and come away with an excellent idea of the habitus of the poor. Conclude your essay (last 3-4 paragraphs) by summarizing the difference in the habitus of the rich from the habitus of the poor. Note how the social, cultural, and financial capitals for each social class (that is their respective habiti) are substantively different. Bourdieu argues that the social classes reproduce themselves. Your textbook elaborates on education as a locus of social reproduction. Do these videos of the rich and poor confirm or contradict his theory? Lastly, using the families in the Poor Kids and Born Rich as your point of departure, debating the American ideology of equal opportunity for all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQvetA1P4Yg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbaslfCkPrY

  • “Exploring Intersectionality: A Feminist Research Proposal” “Uncovering Feminist Perspectives: The Results of Our Research Project”

Below there are descriptions for TWO options for your submissions. You will choose either a RESEARCH PROPOSAL or RESULTS OF RESEARCH, for those of you who were able to engage in the actual research.
    >> Either option should be within the range of 1500-2500 words.
You must give it a title! (Why? If it’s a proposal, a good title is more likely to attract support, including funding; if it’s a written or otherwise creatively produced result of research, it’s the first thing to draw a reader/viewer in.)
    Option 1. RESEARCH PROPOSAL.
This option is for those who will not be able to engage in their actual planned research.
    Research Proposal
Note: recall our discussions about writing. As we have discussed, it is ok and in many cases advisable (motivated by feminist practice) to use “I”/ “we” statements!
    Elements to cover
    Pts
    Notes
    Topic description and question formulation
    2 pts
Now that you have seriously examined this question, use more precise wording as this section should reflect a much greater degree of advancement of your framing of the project. Important here to check for inappropriate generalizations! You can also include here the ways your research question has developed from an earlier version: what pitfalls or problems did you encounter and how does the revised question improve on them?
What is known about the topic?
(for social scientists, this is often referred to as a “lit review”; for humanists it’s more loosely considered a review of existing literature/research/knowledge productions).
    3 pts
Review the secondary sources you have located, including at least some of the works included in your annotated bibliography. In discussing what is known, you can arrive at what is not yet known, effectively identifying what your own research project would contribute. For instance: “These works’ single-issue approaches can yield skewed findings that our current project, with its intersectional focus, is uniquely capable of addressing.”
    Plan – Methods/Approaches:
What is the plan for a careful approach to your inquiry?
    5 pts
Identify the information you need, explaining how the approach provides a specific portion of that information you need.
Also – and this is critical! – describe how you will analyze the information you gather, and why this is appropriate to your research goals.
    Uses for this knowledge:
    Audiences and specific uses
    3 pts
Intended publication type(s) (be specific), distribution to a relevant community, or descriptions of other uses. This should matter to you – who is your audience, and why do they count as your audience? Ultimately, if your research culminates in a communicative act, why that communication is important has to do with where it is destined.
    How this is feminist research:
Give an account of the feminist aspects of your approach
    2 pts
Consider questions of ethics, feminist angles on your topic, feminist theories, and questions of process in your discussion.
    Addenda/appendix/extra materials
    3 pts
Include a discussion of how each of you found ways to contribute to this project, including not just the nuts and bolts of the plan, but also writeup, dreaming, other forms of support. Include here drafts of questions or other research “tools”, and other materials that constitute essential parts of, or be necessary to execute, the research plan, such as a budget and estimated time scope. For example, if it is a survey, include the detail of that survey here. If it is an interview, give more information about how that interview will be conducted. Also include a list of works actually cited.
    Presentation:
Please spend 5 minutes as a team sharing your research project.
    3 pts
You can be informal! Please consider using slides or images (be judicious) or interactivity, such as asking questions of your audience (if you are taking 10 minutes, probably not if shorter). You should minimally discuss the inquiry and your approach to it; the rest of the presentation can address each aspect of the research, or focus on one or another aspect of the project. Do feel welcome to share what was surprising about investigating or doing research in this project.
    Option 2. RESULTS OF RESEARCH.
This option is for those writing up their completed research as an academic paper or other form, such as a creative form. These will vary much more radically than in Option 1. If an academic paper, the more social science/empirical the project was, the more likely you will be to use elements from the sections above.
    Results of Research
Note: recall our discussions about writing. As before, it is ok and in many cases advisable (motivated by feminist practice) to use “I”/ “we” statements!
    Elements to cover
    Pts
    Notes
Main composition of writing or creative work
    6 pts
This will be the main work itself, understood in terms of clarity, comprehensiveness, cohesion, form. You may choose a traditional form of academic writing, unique forms of creative writing or cultural production; however, I recommend aiming for more transparency rather than less, and providing guidelines for the reception of the work unless it is obvious.
    Rationale
    6 pts
If aspects of the research have been obscured by the creative form you have used, you should include an “artist’s statement” of sorts that connects the realization of the work to your approaches in detail. For instance, your research question, if not explained in the work itself, should be shared here.
Addenda/appendix/extra materials, including how this is feminist research
    5 pts
    ·       Include a discussion of how each of you found ways to contribute to this project, including not just the nuts and bolts of the plan, but also writeup, dreaming, other forms of support. Include also:
    ·       Drafts of questions or other research tools, and other materials that constitute essential parts of, or be necessary to execute, the research plan, such as a budget and estimated time scope. For example, if it is a survey, include the detail of that survey here. If it is an interview, give more information about how that interview will be conducted.
    ·       A list of works actually cited
    ·       A discussion of how this is feminist research: Consider questions of ethics, feminist angles on your topic, feminist theories, and questions of process.

  • “Exploring the Effects of Social Media on Mental Health: A Comprehensive Analysis”

I have already written a detailed Research Paper proposal which I got 100 on, and just need it built out to be 6-7 pages long, including some quotes, in MLA format. I have attached the relevant files. The professor explained the assignment verbally, so I transcribed that into text. See attached.
