  • “Improving Fire Dynamics Knowledge through Analysis of the MGM Grand Fire”

Many provisions of model fire and building code were created or improved because of a catastrophic or tragic loss due to fire, explosion, natural disaster, or manufacturing defect.
Choose one (1) large loss fire from the list below and prepare a research paper that identifies an improvement in the body of knowledge for the fire service or fire protection industry regarding the overarching concept of Fire Dynamics that resulted from the incident.
    1. Choose an Incident:
    Choose one of the following:
    Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
    Iroquois Theatre Fire
    Cocoanut Grove Fire
    Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire
Our Lady of Angels School Fire
    MGM Grand Fire
    One Meridian Plaza Fire
    2. Research the Incident: Identify critical issues and points to support your paper. References should use the information addressing the same issues (findings) in the chosen fire incident (e.g., wind-driven fire; egress doors swinging inward, wall coverings, etc.).
Consider the following during your research:
    Fire Dynamics of the incident.
Common substances involved and how they related to combustion and flame spread.
The impact of flammable and combustible substances and how they related to combustion and oxidation.
Any Substances used to ignite and accelerate the fire and how they affected the chemical reaction.
Did the building’s construction type, floor plan, and size affect the incident?
Fire growth curve of the incident.
    Laws of energy and matter.
    3. Write your assignment: Your submitted paper should include a title page, a minimum of 3 pages of content (double spaced and written in Times New Roman 12 point font), and a reference page. You should also include In-text citations following APA guidelines for academic writing.
Your paper shall explain the following:
    Introduction with Problem Statement
    Overview of Incident Investigation Report
    Findings
    Recommendations
    Conclusion

  • “The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire: Lessons Learned and Changes in Life Safety Codes”

The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire occurred on March 25, 1911, and claimed the lives of 146 people. The fire was a wake-up call to municipalities and the fire service.
After completing this week’s readings and conducting your research into this topic, write a paper that answers the following:
    1. What are the most important lessons to be gleaned from this incident?
    2. What changes to Life Safety Codes were brought about because of this fire?
    3. Were the new codes adequate to prevent this type of tragedy from happening again?
    1. Page Number – The page number must appear in the upper right corner of the header on each page of the paper.
    2. Title Page – APA 7th Edition
    3. Main Parts of the Paper – The main parts or sections of the paper include the Introduction, Body and Conclusion
    4. Headings – Headings are required in the paper so that the reader can distinguish between your key points throughout the body of the paper.
    5. Citing Sources – Cite your quoted and paraphrased material using APA 7th Edition
    6. Reference Page – Reference all material using APA 7th Edition and be sure to pay attention to the indentions for each source.
    Page Setup:
    1. Times New Roman font throughout the paper
    2. 12 Point font size throughout the paper
    3. Double Spaced
    4. 1 inch Page Margins: Top, Bottom, Left and Right (Not 1.25 inches)
