  • EVSP180 Annotated Bibliography: Evaluating Credibility of Environmental Science Sources “Annotated Bibliography: Utilizing Scientific Concepts and Terminology”

    nstructions
    EVSP180 Assignment: Annotated Bibliography
Objective: In modern times more than ever, it’s important that we are able to find and understand good science. One of the issues regarding research, especially in the environmental sciences field, is the credibility of the sources used, particularly those obtained from various websites. By challenging you to carefully evaluate scientific sources, the Annotated Bibliography helps you to:
determine that the article (e.g., peer-reviewed journal paper, book, website article) you chose is academically and scientifically credible,
be able to read and summarize scientific research and
list those sources in proper APA reference format (version 7).
This is a skill you will use in any subject! Keeping an annotated bibliography of your sources for every subject keeps you organized and expands your knowledge for whatever course and topic you are studying. Learning Objectives – LO-4.1
    Before You Start:
To prepare for this assignment, I strongly recommend that you:
Review the sample Annotated Bibliography provided to you: Use your own words (paraphrase). For help with paraphrasing, please review the ‘Quoting and Paraphrasing’ help in the Trefry Library Writing@APUS Center.
Note that your Turnitin report similarity score should be under 20% (not including references) and free of paraphrasing issues. Review the color-flagged text on your report, fix any issues, and resubmit again before the deadline (this assignment is set to unlimited submissions until the deadline).
Less than 10% of your work should contain direct quotes.
    Email me with any questions!
    Assignment Instructions:
To begin with, choose an environmental topic you are interested in reading more about. You can look through the syllabus to get some ideas. Your Annotated Bibliography will include an APA-formatted reference, summary, and evaluation of TWO credible source articles you choose. You must use the template provided for your submission which also includes your grade for each section (assignments submitted without the full template will be returned) – EVSP180 Annotated Bibliography Template.docx
What articles are acceptable? They must be peer-reviewed and found through the APUS Trefry Library. To learn how to search for peer-reviewed articles the library has a fantastic page – https://www.apus.edu/apus-library/resources-services/Writing/writing-center/the-research-process.html. Once on this page, click on “Identifying your resources” which takes you through the process. If you have a question about your article please don’t hesitate to ask. 1.APA Reference Formatting Written in APA reference list format (7th edition). For more help with formatting, see the APA handout.
    2.Summary sections:
What is the purpose of the article? Briefly address the following points in 4-6 sentences:
Begin with a “topic sentence” that states the articles main point. (e.g., This article discusses topsoil loss in the state of Kansas.). Summarize the main findings and conclusions of the peer-reviewed journal paper, book, website article, etc.
    3.Evaluation sections:
After summarizing the article, it is necessary to evaluate it and state where you found it (journal, website, book, etc.). Briefly answer the following questions in 4-6 sentences:
What is the format/type of source article (e.g., peer-reviewed journal paper, book, website article)?
Is the author an authority/expert on the topic? Explain how the author is qualified (see below).
oFor subject-matter experts, provide their credentials (e.g. degrees earned, professional or academic affiliations, published works)
How is the publishing source (e.g., the website’s sponsoring organization, journal, book publisher) credible? (e.g., The Journal of Mammalian Research is the peer-reviewed journal of the Society of Mammalian Researchers which is comprised of subject-matter expert members and published quarterly by the University of Linux.)
For more help, see this handout on evaluating resources.
Writing Expectations: Apply scientific concepts and use scientific terminology correctly. Utilize proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation Submission Instructions:
1.Submit your Annotated Bibliography as a “Microsoft Word” document using the template provided (rather than a Word Pad, Works, etc. document). Accepted file types are .doc and .docx only.
2.Your annotated bibliography is automatically submitted to Turnitin with your submission and checked against the standard Turnitin repositories. Originality reports will be returned to the faculty and student in roughly 15 minutes of the submission. It’s always a good idea to review your report and update any issues. Multiple submissions are allowed before the due date. Once the due date has passed your assignment submission is final so please check it before the due date and email the instructor with any questions/concerns.

  • “The Anthropocene on Film: A Comparative Analysis of Aesthetics, Narratives, and Impact in ‘David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet’ and ‘All That Breathes’”

    Film essay assignment
“How should the Anthropocene be filmed? Should films about the Anthropocene tell their audiences a progressive (things are generally getting better) or a declensionist (things are generally getting worse) story? Why do you think that? In an essay (1500 words), we are asking you to compare two documentaries about the Anthropocene and explain which documentary—in your view—offers a better interpretation of the Anthropocene:
    1) David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet, directed by Alastair Fothergill, Jonathan Hughes, Keith Scholey
    or
    2) All That Breathes, directed by Shaunek Sen
You don’t need to do any outside research, but you need to read and respond carefully to the director Shaunek Sen’s interview with Amy Goodman and Jerrine Tan’s “Watching A Life on Our Planet,” both posted to Canvas.
Please use the following prompt to write your essay.
-The essay must have 1500 words, about 5 pages (don’t worry if your word count goes over that number by ~200 words)
-Each paragraph is about 200 words. Each paragraph should discuss both documentaries (EXCEPT for the scene unpacked paragraph) AND clearly explain which doc does a better job with the paragraph prompt.
    Introductory paragraph:
-How should the Anthropocene be filmed—things are getting better or things are getting worse? Why do you think that?
-Explain which documentary—in your view—offers a better interpretation of the Anthropocene
-Paragraph 1 on Aesthetics (how the films are put together in terms of looks and sounds)
-Paragraph 2 on Telling a story (what is the narrative that the filmmakers created? Is it the best choice about beginning, middle, and end? Does the narrative have the best trajectory—things getting better or getting worse or hard to tell?)
-Paragraph 3 on Who exactly is the “we” in the story? Is it mostly a single person? A group of people? From a specific time or place? Why do you think the filmmakers made that particular choice?
-Paragraph 4 on how (if at all) do the filmmakers tell their audiences to do something political, economic, social, aesthetic, ecological, etc., about the Anthropocene? In other words, do you think film should be primarily an instrument for change in the world or is it enough to make something beautiful and/or provocative for viewers to experience?
-Paragraph 5 in the doc with the “better interpretation” pick one important five-minute segment (scene) from the documentary that you want to unpack in detail. You will explain what you think the filmmakers were trying to accomplish in the scene and how the scene itself “worked.” How did the choice of subject, shot selection and duration, framing within the shot, narration and interviews (or lack thereof), music, and/or editing come together to make the scene work together? Why does this scene capture the Anthro the best?
-Conclusion paragraph: Imagine what you might remember from this film in five years? What parts or take-aways do you hope to remember from watching and writing about these two films? Which piece—Sen interview or Tan review—made a bigger impression on you regarding the Anthropocene on film?
-In addition, your essay must be organized (what are the links among your insights, evaluations, or evidence? how does one paragraph lead to the second and so on?), well-written, proofread, and it must demonstrate your critical, thoughtful response to both films. Can use first-person pronouns like “I” or “We.” You should include a bibliography or works cited list or footnotes. Whatever citation style you use (Chicago, APA, etc.), just use the citation style consistently and correctly
