  • Title: “Mapping Paul’s Journeys and Letters: A Visual Guide to the Apostle’s Missionary Travels”

Paul wrote most of his letters to the churches during his missionary journeys. As you prepare to study the Pauline Epistles next week, it is helpful to get a grasp of the journeys of Paul that are recorded in Acts. You will complete this assignment in two parts.
    Part 1
Complete the attached map by drawing Paul’s first, second, third missionary journeys and his trip to Rome during his imprisonment.
    First Missionary Journey (Acts 13–14)
    Second Missionary Journey (Acts 15:36–18:22)
    Third Missionary Journey (Acts 18:23–20:38)
    Roman Imprisonment (Acts 27–28)
Draw each journey through the locations visited. Get creative! You are welcome to use colored pencils, fun lines, font, etc. Complete the map by hand. Use the maps in your textbook or the back of a study Bible for assistance. Each missionary journey should have its own distinct color to separate it from the rest.
    Part 2
Create a presentation on Paul’s journeys. For each journey, include the following information:
    The locations he visited
    The letters he wrote
Two to three key events from the journey
Your presentation should include the location and/or timeframe during his ministry that Paul wrote each of his thirteen letters. Rely on your textbook for help with this assignment. You may need to look ahead at some letters to learn when they were written. Cite your textbook when you use it. You are also welcome to use academic sources from libguides.ccu.edu. You are not permitted to use nonacademic Internet sources for this project.
Use cited graphics to make your presentation aesthetically instructive and include at least one map. The text of your slides should be basic. Include detailed explanations of the meaning of your slide text in the presenter’s notes.
Your presentation should be 8–10 slides, not including the title and reference slide. You must include the presenter’s notes for each slide. For help with the presenter’s notes, view this webpage.
You will submit your assignment in two parts. Your map can be completed by hand, and you can submit it by taking pictures or scanning your map. Submit your presentation as a PowerPoint Presentation. Submit both pieces of the assignment together by adding all files to your submission.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on add a file, then click submit to upload your assignment by the posted due date. Review the rubric for specific grading criteria.

  • “The Power of Female Heroism in Toni Morrison’s Sula: A Literary Analysis”

This essay will be a literary research essay about Sula.  That means you will engage with what other scholars in the field have to say about your topic. must be: 5-7 pages (approximately 1250-1750 words), double-spaced, in 12-point font, with one-inch margins.  Number your pages.  Give your essay a specific and descriptive title that clearly reveals your focus. As with previous assignments, please put your thesis statement in boldface. It is okay if you exceed 1750 words or 7 pages but strive for brevity and clarity in your argument. must use MLA-style documentation, including a works cited list. must consult and engage with at least 2 reputable scholarly articles or books; at some points, you will need to fully summarize and explain the authors’ claims with which you are dealing.  One of these essays will be Karen F. Stein’s piece “Toni Morrison’s Sula: A Black Woman’s Epic.” The book you are writing about (Sula) is your “primary source” and does not count as one of the two sources. And, I say this every time, on all my assignments:  I expect to see a focused argumentative thesis with supporting points based on textual analysis.  Use the text as support, meaning, you must build your argument through close reading and explanation of actual passages in the text.  Fully develop your analysis.  A quotation from the text will not illustrate your thesis on its own.  You must teach the reader, through close reading and elaboration upon details in the passages, how it relates to your thesis.  It is also better to elaborate in detail upon one example in each paragraph than to bring in too many undeveloped examples in a paragraph. Be sure to begin your body paragraphs with clearly written topic sentences that announce the main idea of the paragraph and how it connects to your ongoing argument. If you include your outline after the works cited page in your submission, you will receive extra points in your overall grade. You may consider one of the following questions. If you choose to go in an independent direction (Yes! Go for it!), please discuss it with me. Remember that an essay that fails to address a prompt does not earn a passing grade.
    1. In what ways do Nel, Sula, or other female characters exemplify heroism? What principle does this hero illustrate in her life? Is it a necessary value in the Bottom?
    2. How do male characters (or female characters) in Sula suffer from what Morrison describes (in her Foreword to the 2002 Vintage “blue cover” edition) as the “wasteful capitalist war . . . on black people”?
    3. How does Morrison employ narrative point of view in Sula? How does the narration impact the meaning or significance of the content?
    4. Pick one textual motif that appears throughout the novel at least 3 or more times (e.g., Sula’s birthmark, Nel’s embarrassment about her mother’s “custard” skin, Nel’s “gray ball,” Shadrack’s “National Suicide Day,” or any other recurring image/reference that you notice). Present an interpretation of the novel’s meaning that accounts for or considers the role of this motif.
the assignment must be focused on a clear argumentative thesis. I’ve included the stein essay, sula, as well as another source by Ashfaque Ahmad Shovon to include in the argument.

Edwards and Graulund discuss two distinct types of laughter that are associated with the grotesque – 1) laughter that is regenerative, expressing a sense of social unity; and 2) laughter that is destructive and ridiculing, facilitating a process of marginalization. Using The Bacchae, Ubu Roi, and/or any of the texts we have read this term, provide at least one example of each kind of laughter.
Discuss the grotesque elements incorporated in Euripides Bacchae. How does Euripides complicate the process of epiphany in The Bacchae? What role does disguise play in how the action unfolds? How does this complication relate to Agave’s ecstasy and the ultimate sparagmos of Pentheus toward the end of the play?
One aspect of the carnivalesque that Mikhail Bakhtin discusses is the erasure of the distinction between high and low culture. How would you define each term? Using Ubu Roi or any other texts you have read for the class or elsewhere, explain how the grotesque destabilizes the distinction.
Edwards and Graulund offer the following definition of Julia Kristeva’s concept of the “female abject” – “Neither subject nor object, the abject, or the state of abjection, is articulated in, and through, grotesque language and imagery.” Using this definition, in addition to the concept of the monstrous-feminine, write a response considering how ideologies of gender function alongside the grotesque in characters like Agave and the other Bacchae, Francesca from Dante’s Inferno, Greta and Mrs. Samsa in Kafka’s Metamorphosis, or any other characters we encountered this term.
