Overview The research proposal provides a space for you to share the reasons why you want to study your chosen topic and helps you determine the parameters of your future writing project, including your research question(s), rationale, summary, predictions, list of reviewed sources, and a strategy for next steps. This assignment serves two purposes: it provides a blueprint–or a working plan–for your future essay, and it helps you to establish topical boundaries, as you begin to narrow your research focus. Expectations The research proposal aims to develop your ability to navigate a complex research and review process. This assignment will help you to: Collect and organize source material Practice MLA formatting Organize your ideas coherently and concisely Synthesize your own ideas with the ideas from sources Practice presenting information to readers in manageable chunks Engage in self-reflection and planning processes Requirements This assignment requires 7 fully developed and supported sections, as outlined in Organization. The minimum word count is 650 words total. (Please note: there is an error in the instructional video–only 7 sections are required.) *If the above requirements are not met, your assignment may be returned with no grade and a resubmission will be required. Length/Sources: You should include the 5 sources that you collected for your annotated bibliography and list them in section 6 of the research proposal. For this assignment only: you do not need to worry about including a hanging indent for your reference citations. However, please plan to use MLA formatting for the order and structure of the citations. Organization: Your proposal should include the following 7 components, and should be presented using the organizer required for this assignment. Component Content Conditions Proposed Topic In this section, you will describe the topic that you want to study, including any important issues that you will address, in regards to that topic. Aim for 1-2 complete and concise sentences. You want to be very specific here, with a nicely narrowed focus. Question(s) In this section, you will present the question(s) that you are using to investigate your topic and discuss why these questions are the ones that you have decided to use to guide your progress. Aim for 4 complete and concise questions. Taking on more than that will broaden your scope too much. Rationale In this paragraph, you will share why this topic interests you, and what led to you investigating it. Aim for a fully developed and supported paragraph, with at least 4-5 sentences. Summary In this paragraph, you will share some of the parameters for your project: What are the specific supporting points you are considering, and why? Is there anything you are not planning on covering? Why/why not? Aim for a fully developed and supported paragraph, with at least 4-5 sentences. Prediction In this paragraph, you will predict what you will learn from your investigation of your topic–what do you think you will discover? Why do you think this information will be important? Do you expect to find any gaps in information? Aim for a fully developed and supported paragraph, with at least 4-5 sentences. List of Reviewed Sources In this section, you will include the list of the 5 sources you collected for your annotated bibliography. Be sure to use MLA formatting for these reference citations. However, you do not need to worry about using the hanging indent. Explanation In this paragraph, you will describe why readers should care about your topic. What makes your topic important? Why is this an issue that everyone needs to know about? Aim for a fully developed and supported paragraph, with at least 4-5 sentences. Document Formatting: MLA formatting: Heading (name, assignment name, course name, date), original title, header (page numbers), line-spacing (single or double-spaced), 1” margins, 12-point font size, and Times New Roman or other sans-serif font. Genre/Style: Formal analysis using a 7-section graphic organizer. Although this is a multimodal assignment, your writing should be in complete sentences and include academic tone and structure. Organizer Please copy and paste this organizer into a Word document and fill out each row on the right with information specific to your topic and research project. You are a news journalist that has been assigned to write a ½ page to full page report on one of the central events that occurs in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. 
Your lead news story should be based on one or more of the main scenes from the play.
This may include: 
– Macdonwald’s rebellion against the throne 
– Any of the murders
– Macbeth’s encounter with the witches 
Your central article should provide a detailed account of the event in question that describes where this event took place, who was involved, when it happened, and how it happened. 
Your main article should include a catchy headline to hook your readers; you must provide a title for the news organization or agency that you’re writing for, and you should include one or more pictures to accompany your article(s). 
You must also include a relevant quotation from the play to incorporate into your story. 
In addition to your primary focus story, you must also include at least two shorter entries (at least 2-3 sentences in length) that are either articles, ads or other features you would find in a newspaper. 
Your newspaper/ news page should be organized, creative and demonstrate few major grammatical or punctuation issues.

Teacher’s Instructions:  You will write about a selected social issue or course theme with a public audience specifically in mind and in a genre that lends itself to public consumption. You should incorporate three co-thinker texts into your work that help you accomplish your project.  These texts may be used to help establish and enter the conversation. I will guide you as to what sources you may use. This assignment does NOT require you to engage in independent outside research. This means you are not required to interview people, visit cultural institutions, or conduct your own surveys.

Media                                                                                                                                                                                       Once you have selected a major social issue of the past year, you will write an essay examining the language (keywords, phrases, overused words, etc.) used to address this issue in an attempt to determine if it was harmful or helpful to the general American public. 
I chose race as my major topic, but I’m mainly discussing Immigrants who are non-white. 
My essay is about the impact of language and terminology on public perception regarding non-white immigrants. 
I already discussed two of my three sources in the pdf below, which are my first and second body paragraphs. They are: 
1.”Politics and the English Language” by George Orwell as my Primary Source
2. “The Fight Over Immigration” by Jeff Gammage as my Secondary Source
So I want you to help me with my third body paragraph with my third source
3. “Propaganda: How Not to Be Bamboozled” by Donna Woolfolk Cross with quotes to help back up what you will be saying.
You can also add one source to make it more interesting, you can choose between”Politics and the English Language” by George Orwell or  “The Fight Over Immigration” by Jeff Gammage.

This essay asks you to focus on one or two aspects of Zeitoun and to compare how those things occur in the book with how they occur today.  To identify a topic, think about the aspects of the story that seem to develop into themes or reoccurring ideas.  For example, you might notice racial profiling against particular groups in the book, and connect that to racial profiling of certain groups that might happen today.  You might also notice the slow or disorganized FEMA response to Hurricane Katrina victims and compare that to FEMA responses today to see if things have changed or improved. As long as you develop a discussion about events in the book and compare those with a current event happening now, any reasonable topic is fine. 
Once you identify the issue you want to discuss and research, use the college databases to find credible articles on that topic, both as a current event and as an event during Hurricane Katrina.  You may also use articles from credible periodicals, like The Atlantic.  Additionally, you may use credible online news sources, like NPR.org or CNN.com.  Other credible sites, like the ACLU.org, are also acceptable, as are documentaries. Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable source for this essay. We will discuss credible sources together in class.
As you develop talking points for your essay, consider the following:  how does this issue come up in the book? Why is it significant? How does it impact Zeitoun and his family, or other people in the book? What does the research article say about this issue?  Does it support what the book says? Have things changed since Katrina with regard to the issue?  What problems still exist or what improvements have been made?  What can we learn from your comparison?
Your essay should provide a fully developed discussion of the book that is accentuated by material from the article.  It should also have a thesis that makes some arguments about the connection between the book and your research.   
Length: 6-8 pages, including works cited page
Source Requirement: at least 4 outside credible sources from our databases AND Zeitoun.  One source must be from a peer-reviewed journal.
At least 3 of your sources must have been published in the last 5 years. 
Rubric:
Introduction in funnel format with an argumentative thesis at the end:  20 points
Well-focused paragraphs that support the thesis and provide cohesive discussion:  30 points
Quoted material is used fairly and integrated using MLA format / Signal Phrases:   20 points
Works Cited page: 15 points
Paper has been carefully proofread: 15 points
