  • “Strategies for Managing Ego Depletion: Navigating the Cost of Self-Restraint”

    ESSAY #3: EGO DEPLETION
Understanding ego depletion gives us insight into our own will power and motivation. One of the main ideas in McRaney’s article is that any exertion has some cost to it. Physical and emotional restraint depletes self-regulation on a constant basis. Granted, some restraints cost more fuel than others. The point is that you’re always being depleted at some level through making choices to restrain behavior. In other words, just living and choosing through our day generally depletes our overall ability to self-regulate, make good choices, and keep our “worst selves” at bay.
As noted in McRaney’s discussion about fuel use in the brain, “all brain functions require fuel, but the executive functions seem to require the most” (115). These executive functions—some call them administrative functions—are crucial to making choices for one’s life. However, functions such as planning and organizing burn up so much fuel (ego depletion). That’s why planning, organizing and taking action on tasks for the future can feel so hard; sometimes it burns fuel we just don’t have. We feel like we’re running on fumes—and we are! So we just choose to not plan or organize, then pay the consequences of it later.
And to add insult to injury, McRaney notes that “research suggests that will power isn’t a skill. If it were, there would be some consistency from one task to the next. Instead, every time you exert control over the giant system that is you, that control gets weaker” (166). So, if will power is not a skill that we can neither develop nor make consistent across our life choices, then what can we do about it? We still need to motivate and make choices for ourselves that run our lives.
One suggestion that helps is to identify what dampens executive functioning the most; then try to avoid it.  As McRaney writes, “[t]he only way to avoid this state of mind is to predict what might cause it in your daily life and to avoid those things when you need the most volition” (116).

  • Title: The Culture of a Male Cheerleader: An Evaluation of Quality of Life, Belonging, Equity & Fairness, Integrity & Accountability, and Contribution Introduction: As a male cheerleader, I am a part of a unique cultural

Teacher Instructions: Choose an element of your personal culture as is reflected in the diagram below. Remember that interpretive groups over involve multiple aspects of cultural identity. Choose a specific enough interpretive group that you don’t have to make sweeping generalizations. (Speaking for an entire gender, race, or language of speakers isn’t a good idea.) However, these are all aspects that can play into your topic choice. Your evaluation should introduce your culture and then evaluate it against several criteria of your choosing. Each criterion should be carefully outlined early in your paper and should govern the organization of your essay. This paper should draw from your own experiences and should not cite any sources.

Please write the essay topic as the culture of a male cheerleader and written in MLA format.
Here are possible criteria to include in the essay.
Possible Criteria (choose several of these or devise your own):
    1. Quality of life: Does this culture encourage happiness and well being amongst its members and for others?
    2. Belonging: Does this cultural group require anything unethical or its members for belonging?
    3. Equity & Fairness: Is this culture fair and inclusive to others outside of this group?
    4. Integrity & Accountability: Does this culture model honesty about past wrongdoings?
    5. Contribution: Does this culture contribute meaningfulness to the world?
Attached are examples for how the essay should be layed out and look like.

  • “The Immortality of Art: An Analysis of John Keats’ Ode on a Grecian Urn”

Please write a 5 page research paper on a poem by John Keats. The core of the essay should be an interpretation of the poem. That is, formulate an argument about the poem, and support that argument with detailed commentary on individual lines. Keep in mind that you’re analyzing a literary work, so don’t just focus on the content as you prove your central claim. Be sure to also address the poem’s formal qualities. In other words, comment on both what the poem says and on how it says it.

  • Title: The Dichotomy of “Migrant” and “Refugee”: Examining the Impact of Definitions on Human Migration and Immigration Benefits The terms “migrant” and “refugee” are often used interchangeably in public discourse

Discuss the difference between the definitions of “migrant” and “refugee,” with particular attention to the way that some populations are marked as “deserving” of immigration benefits while others are not. In your post, describe how these definitions and their implications impact the processes and experience of human migration, using at least one example from the Yarris and Castañeda reading.
For each Daily Discussion, you will create one original post that includes a discussion question, and respond to one of your classmates’ posts/discussion questions with a response discussion post.
The original discussion post should be 450-600 words, and must include a discussion question about the readings or course content for that day. Keep in mind the best discussion questions will be:
Open-ended- Questions cannot be answered with yes/no or either/or
Answerable by your classmates- Questions do not require extensive knowledge from outside the course, and can be answered using knowledge/experience versus speculation
Substantive and relevant- Questions should be related to a significant point/argument in the course lesson or readings assigned for the day, and should ask us to consider the point/argument in the context of the themes of this course.
In addition, you will craft a response post that replies in a substantive manner to a discussion question posed by one of your classmates. The post should be at least 150 words.

  • Breaking the Stigma: A Critical Examination of Mental Health Perception in the Present Time “Understanding and Utilizing the Feedback Protocol for Essay Assignments”

    Argumentative Essay
Compose an argumentative essay about mental health and its stigmas, focused specifically on its perception at the present time, 1,000 words minimum in length, paragraphed, that applies MLA-formatting, two in-text citations in two separate supporting paragraphs (one citation in each of those two supporting paragraphs), and a Works Cited page, and that follows the rules of SWE (Standard Written English). This essay is expected to state a central idea about mental health and its stigmas, focused specifically on its perception at the present time, as a thesis, followed by convincing reasons (stated as topic sentences at the beginning of each supporting paragraph) and compelling examples, including the successful implementation of several Critical Thinking techniques, all supporting the central idea in a series of well-developed supporting paragraphs. A conclusion paragraph following the supporting paragraphs is also required.
    RUBRIC: 4pts possible
    Thesis = 1pt
    Support = 1pt
    MLA = 1pt
    SWE = 1pt
    Other Requirements
A title announcing the topic in some way is required. As early as the thesis paragraph, define or at least explain your key terms, that is, define or explain what you mean by “mental health” and “stigmas.” Your ideas for this essay may be inspired by the Week 16-17 anthology readings (Emerging), but those readings must not be used or cited as sources. Instead, include two brief quotes (no more and no less than three (3) lines each), placed in two different supporting paragraphs, and taken from two separate New York Times articles both published in recent years, that deal with the subject of mental health and its stigmas, focused specifically on its perception at the present time. Two quotes are required; only two quotes are permitted; quotes published more than three years ago are not permitted; only quotes published in recent years in the required two separate sources count as acceptable quotes. (Use an ellipsis … or brackets [   ] in the quotes as needed if you omit words from the original quotes for economy and conciseness or add words of your own for clarity and context.) List the required two separate New York Times articles selected by you on a Works Cited page according to MLA formatting and citation standards. The two separate articles are your only sources: two sources are required; only two sources are permitted; only two separate New York Times articles published in recent years, each of which deals with the topic assigned for Essay 6, count as acceptable sources.
    Submitting the Essay
Submitted documents that contain less than the required minimum of 1,000 words receive an automatic 0pts. (Double-check your document’s word count before uploading the file to this online platform. When one checks the word count of a .doc or .docx document to be uploaded to Canvas, one opens that document and looks at the number of words listed on the lower left of the screen. The same number is also listed in the Review menu at the top after clicking on Word Count in that drop-down menu. Your submitted document must have a word count listed as “1000 words” or higher on the lower left of the screen, and in the Review menu under Word Count, the same number of words must be stated there as “Words 1000” or higher.) Essay 6 papers submitted after the 5:59 p.m. due date specified under Assignments: Essay 6 are considered late papers; late papers receive an automatic 0pts; revisions after the due date are not allowed; there are no makeups, and there is no extra credit.
    Point Score
Four (4) points maximum are assigned based on successful implementation of thesis, support, MLA, and SWE (see RUBRIC above), as defined in the Syllabus.
    Detailed Instructions
Additional information about more detailed expectations and requirements, necessary for the assignment’s completion, including the successful implementation of several Critical Thinking techniques (Inductive and Deductive Analysis, Claim Cast) for thesis and support, must be reviewed in the weekly Canvas Announcements. A simplified checklist of the essay’s requirements will be included in the weekly Announcements. Reading that checklist, however, is no substitute for reading the Announcements in their entirety.
    Stated Expectations
It is very important to read and understand the Canvas Announcements instead of merely assuming that a paper meets undefined general standards while specific stated expectations remain unknown.
    Feedback Protocol
If the score for a paper is 4pts, it should be assumed that the stated expectations have been met. Additional feedback details on points not earned, if any, will not be instructor-imposed but are to be student-requested as needed or desired, an optional step intended to prevent potential emotional-distress triggers for any students who might be vulnerable in this regard. After voluntarily initiating the feedback protocol by contacting the instructor with a MySite email when the score is less than 4pts (again, this is entirely optional), the student is then told by email reply in which of the four categories the expectations were not met and, where necessary or appropriate, referred to the Announcements or sets of Announcements where those are stated.
    Using Checklists
Provided with this information, the student can then go through the checklist or checklists to compare the specific stated expectations for the assigned paper with the met or unmet expectations in the submitted paper. Sometimes a student may not be able to figure it out on their own, for instance by reviewing relevant textbook information, and may then contact the instructor again with a follow-up MySite email, whereupon the instructor may reply by MySite email and go into more detail, always as needed or requested. All submitted essays are “returned” like this.

    Instructions
New venture opportunity and SWOT analysis paper
This week we will study the SWOT analysis in detail. This week’s paper is required to be approximately 4 -6 pages in length, not including the title page and the reference page. No paper should be fewer than 1400 words. Double space your work, cite your sources, limit quotes, and edit your work well! Your work will automatically be reviewed by Turnitin upon submission. You will be able to see your similarity report within 20 minutes after your submission. Resubmits are not permitted. Please make sure you cite your work properly and avoid direct quotes.
For this assignment you will invent a new business venture. This is a new start – up venture, not an existing one or one that is expanding. Do not use a business created in a previous class. You may not use papers (or any part of a paper) submitted in another class. Make up the business, the location, the client base, and the product or service. Do not use any real company. You may review a real company’s website for ideas, but the basis of this paper should be your own ideas. Your opening sentence should begin with something like this: “The new business venture that I will evaluate is ……………..” Expect that your business will be opened in the coming years, not one that opened 10 years ago. Your introduction should include a description of your company and any details that are important to the reader. The description of your company should be a couple paragraphs with a summary of the business. The other details can be discussed when you are reviewing each of the SWOT elements. The final goal of this paper is to prepare a SWOT analysis of your new venture company. Make sure you have at least two other sources (other than the text) to supplement your work.
    Youtube video
After developing your new venture and describing it thoroughly in the beginning of your paper, provide a thorough SWOT analysis. Make sure you have included the actual SWOT analysis quad chart (embedded within your paper) listing the strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities. You can use your own chart, but your paper should include a simple SWOT chart with the four segments. Then, you must discuss each segment thoroughly and explain what you have learned from performing your analysis.  Include financial information as listed below.
So, your paper should include a title page and a reference page (no abstract is required):
1 – a description of your new venture (have a clear introduction)
2 – include a simple quad chart with the four basic quadrants embedded in your paper
3 – a thorough explanation of what you have learned from the analysis, further defining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats
    4. be sure to include monetary information. You can’t evaluate a new start up for a beauty salon if you don’t include the costs to start up and an estimate of your monthly operating costs. How many hair cuts would you have to provide customers before you break even each month (of course you can estimate costs). For instance, you have to purchase equipment (dryers, chairs, etc) and you have to rent space (or buy space). What is the monthly rent or mortgage payment and how easily will that be earned each month. Include all other costs also (payroll, supplies, advertising, etc). Where will the start up money come from?  It may be effective to put these costs in a column with totals rather than paragraph format.
5 – an evaluation – based on what you have learned, will you continue your business venture? Be sure to answer that question at the close of your paper.
Submit your paper into the assignment section of the classroom.
Font and Spacing – Use Times New Roman 12 point font with double-spaced lines.
Length – Write a 4 to 6 page essay not including the title page and citation page. Make sure you have at least 1400 words, not counting the title and reference page.
Reference Page – Include all sources including your textbook on a Reference page
Utilize the APA Style for documenting sources. You will need to include at least two sources in addition to your textbook. Finally, remember Wikipedia is NOT a scholarly source.
Punctuation, essay format (thesis, supporting paragraphs with transition and topic sentences, and summary) grammar and documentation count toward your grade.

  • “The Journey Ahead” The Journey Ahead I sat on the edge of my bed, staring out the window at the darkening sky. Tomorrow marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life – the start of my journey towards my five-year goals

    Course:
    English IV – College Prep
    Unit:
    Creative Writing
    Assignment:
    LC1209: Creative Writing Composition
GOAL: To tell a compelling story in a creative manner that demonstrates mastery of the skills learned in this unit and reflects a biblical theme or perspective.
For this project, you will combine the skills that you have learned in your creative writing unit, including narration, point of view, style, literary devices, and planning with your own imagination and writing skills. However, before you begin writing, take some time to think about the prompt you may select and how you want to present your ideas to your reader.
Because this is a creative writing project, your teacher will be looking for ORIGINAL IDEAS AND CREATIVE WRITING CRAFT DEVICES that are thoroughly explained.
    Part I: Selecting a Prompt
Choose ONE prompt below to guide your writing. Highlight the prompt you choose.
Write a compelling, fictional story that demonstrates understanding and mastery of the craft of fiction writing. Consider what you’ve learned so far in your lessons about theme, specific characters, plot, causality, setting, point of view, voice, and literary devices that enhance the overall impact. Your story should reveal a worthy theme or biblical lesson, though not state it overtly.
Write an account describing where you see yourself in five years. You should address at least the following areas (though you may also include others): relationships, spiritual life, education/career goals, and physical wellness/health. Be sure to identify specific habits that will help you reach your five-year goals. Then explain what a typical day may be like in your future life. Use details and be specific.
    Part II: Planning
Now that you have selected a topic, think about what information and details you want to include. Your composition must include each of the following creative writing elements listed below.
At least THREE different figurative language devices: at least one use of imagery, one symbol, and at least one other type of figurative language. Write these in bold on your composition and then insert a “comment” to the left side that identifies the device and gives a brief explanation of its meaning in relation to your composition.
At least ONE Bible verse that illuminates your central theme. Be sure to cite these with MLA in-text citations and a works cited entry at the end of your composition.
    Part III: Writing
Begin writing your composition. Your final draft should be 400-600 words. Before you submit the project, make sure you proofread your composition for mechanical errors including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization as well as proper MLA formatting that includes all of the heading information, a creative title, paragraph indentation, and double-spacing. Make sure your composition thoughtfully addresses the components listed above and demonstrates your strength as a STORYTELLER.
Begin typing your composition here (the space will expand as you type):
