  • “Reflecting on My Writing Journey in ESL 152: Three Areas of Improvement”

    At
the beginning of the semester, you wrote a diagnostic essay. Your final
essay asked you to read that first essay you wrote and reflect on what
you have learned in ESL 152.
    Here is the essay question:
Based on your first essay and your work in ESL 152, what are three ways your writing has improved?
    TIPS:
Be sure you use examples from your diagnostic essay to explain how your writing has improved.
Be sure to demonstrate what we have learned about essay structure,
paragraph structure, the writer’s sense/ voice, and the writing process.
    Good luck!

  • “Finding a Long-Term Solution: Addressing the Ongoing Homeless Crisis in the LC Valley”

argumentative essay with thesis -The ongoing homeless issue in our valley needs some long-term solutions that will require an agreement and will require all of us to recognize the lack of support systems
that contribute to this ongoing crisis.
    outline-Outline
1.The homeless people have nowhere to go
-they have been run out of the city parks
-the camp they were allowed to stay at was closed down
2.The ongoing homeless issue in the LC Valley has yet to find a solution.
-need to come to an agreement with city and community

4.Need to recognize the need for resources because there are none to help the homeless get back on their feet.
    -need more mental health help
    -need more treatment centers
-more accessible resources to find employment
with outline listed at the end of essay after sources and citations
As you write, remember that you are moving away from a personal reflection on the issue to an academic essay based on a relevant local issue in your community. Therefore, this draft needs to be written in the third person, i.e. you should not state that “I believe…” but rather that “Research supports…”
Follow these steps to complete your Assessment:
Review your completed Assessment from Competency EC1002: Developing Coherent Sentences and Paragraphs. Review your Written Response Template from EC1003: Developing a Thesis and Outline.
Use your Outline as a guide to draft a 3- to 4-page Argumentative Essay that does the following:
Describes the social challenge in your local community that you’ve selected.
Identifies your position on the challenge and your proposal for improvement.
Presents at least two arguments for why this proposal should be followed.
Supports those arguments with information from a scholarly article.
Concludes with a call to action.
Copy and paste the Outline you created in your EC1003 Developing a Thesis and Outline Template document, so your faculty assessor can refer to it as they review your Argumentative Essay rough draft.
Format your Argumentative Essay rough draft, according to APA guidelines. There are two options below to help with this:
Click the link below to view the video entitled APA Essay Format (7th):
To complete this Written Response Assessment, you will submit a full rough draft for an argumentative essay that presents your opinion or proposal – Here, you should present the topic (problem/ controversy) and your stance.
The introduction is where you introduce the topic at hand, provide necessary background information, and end with your thesis statement. Since this essay is fairly short, your introduction should be no more than one paragraph in length. Please revise. This is your chance to find a creative way to introduce this topic and draw in your reader’s interest. Perhaps you can create an intriguing character in a very short story, one that explains how this ban affects us all. Remember, your reader will be very well-versed in your topic. They simply have a different stance on your thesis.
The supporting arguments for your proposal (Three paragraph minimum)- Use the resources you researched to prove your point and debate counter arguments.
Make sure you present opposing views to your argument: Arguments supporting the thesis statement acknowledge opposing positions and provide arguments and research specifically to address these opposing positions.Support those arguments with information from scholarly sources.
You need to include and cite outside evidence to support your point of view. I would suggest three to five different resources, such as statistics, quotes, or projects.
And a concluding paragraph that summarizes your argument and calls your audience to action.
You should have five paragraphs minimum.
    What happened?
    scholarly article referenced to and
    citations and sources

  • “Exploring Madness and Cultural Critique: A Comparative Analysis of Texts”

    Final Exam Prompt:
In two typewritten pages, please respond to one of the following prompts:
    1) This semester, we have seen how tales of madness can be used as vehicles for addressing pressing social concerns, including shifting attitudes toward race, gender, and class.  In this paper, you will be asked to find an outside text (i.e., a literary piece, film, television show, animated work, or graphic novel) and argue that it, too, is using the motif of madness to engage in a form of cultural critique.  During the course of making your argument, you should draw direct comparisons between your chosen text and at least one of the works we have read and discussed in class, making sure to support your ideas and observations with textual evidence.
    2) Over the course of this class, we have read works of poetry, fiction, and drama that explore the idea of madness in a variety of ways, from a range of differing perspectives.  We have also encountered one nonfiction, psychological essay that seeks to trouble and challenge our most common assumptions about insanity.  In this paper, you will be asked to reflect back on these readings, and the discussions they generated, and answer the following questions: Do you now think about the concept of “madness” differently than you did on the first day of class?  How so?  In developing your response, you should to quote from at least two of the texts we worked with this semester.
    3) In two pages, retell one of the stories we have read from the point of view of a minor character.  (For instance, you might retell “Mouthful of Birds” from Sara’s perspective, or “The Lottery” from Old Man Warner’s).  Your story must incorporate scenes/dialogue from the original text, not contradict any major plot points, and creatively engage with some of the ideas we’ve been exploring throughout the course (e.g., the historical oppression of women, the lingering effects of poverty, the dangers of blindly following tradition, etc.).
In addition, Prompt 3 requires a “justification” of one page.  In this justification, you will explain how your portrayal of the minor character touches on significant issues explored in this semester’s readings and class discussions, and how it helps us to see the original story in a new light. You should quote from at least one of this semester’s texts in your justification.
The final exam is worth 15% of your final grade for the course.

  • “The Heroism and Struggle of Black Women in Toni Morrison’s Sula: A Critical Analysis”

This essay will be a literary research essay about Sula.  That means you will engage with what other scholars in the field have to say about your topic. must be: 5-7 pages (approximately 1250-1750 words), double-spaced, in 12-point font, with one-inch margins.  Number your pages.  Give your essay a specific and descriptive title that clearly reveals your focus. As with previous assignments, please put your thesis statement in boldface. It is okay if you exceed 1750 words or 7 pages but strive for brevity and clarity in your argument. must use MLA style documentation, including a works cited list. must consult and engage with at least 2 reputable scholarly articles or books; at some points you will need to fully summarize and explain the authors’ claims with which you are dealing.  One of these essays will be Karen F. Stein’s piece “Toni Morrison’s Sula: A Black Woman’s Epic.” The book you are writing about (Sula) is your “primary source” and does not count as one of the two sources. And, I say this every time, on all my assignments:  I expect to see a focused argumentative thesis with supporting points based on textual analysis.  Use the text as support, meaning, you must build your argument through close reading and explanation of actual passages in the text.  Fully develop your analysis.  A quotation from the text will not illustrate your thesis on its own.  You must teach the reader, through close reading and elaboration upon details in the passages, how it relates to your thesis.  It is also better to elaborate in detail upon one example in each paragraph than to bring in too many undeveloped examples in a paragraph. Be sure to begin your body paragraphs with clearly written topic sentences that announce the main idea of the paragraph and how it connects to your ongoing argument. If you include your outline after the works cited page in your submission, you will receive extra points in your overall grade. You may consider one of the following questions. If you choose to go in an independent direction (Yes! Go for it!), please discuss it with me. Remember that an essay that fails to address a prompt does not earn a passing grade.
    1. In what ways do Nel, Sula, or other female characters exemplify heroism? What principle does this hero illustrate in her life? Is it a necessary value in the Bottom?
    2. How do male characters (or female characters) in Sula suffer from what Morrison describes (in her Foreword to the 2002 Vintage “blue cover” edition) as the “wasteful capitalist war . . . on black people”?
    3. How does Morrison employ narrative point of view in Sula? How does the narration impact the meaning or significance of the content?
    4. Pick one textual motif that appears throughout the novel at least 3 or more times (e.g., Sula’s birthmark, Nel’s embarrassment about her mother’s “custard” skin, Nel’s “gray ball,” Shadrack’s “National Suicide Day,” or any other recurring image/reference that you notice). Present an interpretation of the novel’s meaning that accounts for or considers the role of this motif.
the assignment must be focused on a clear argumentative thesis. I’ve included the stein essay, sula, as well as another source by Ashfaque Ahmad Shovon to include in the argument.

Autonomy, the capacity to make one’s own decisions and manage one’s own life, plays a critical role across various life stages, significantly impacting development and well-being. From early childhood through old age, autonomy influences self-esteem, motivation, and mental health, shaping the trajectory of an individual’s life.
In early childhood, autonomy begins to develop as children learn to make choices and exercise control over their environment. This stage is marked by the need for supportive guidance from caregivers, allowing children to explore and learn within safe boundaries. For instance, toddlers who are encouraged to choose their own clothes or decide which game to play are more likely to develop a sense of competence and confidence. Literature highlights that autonomy-supportive parenting, where children are given reasonable choices and are encouraged to take initiative, is associated with better academic and social outcomes.
During adolescence, autonomy becomes even more crucial as individuals seek to establish their identity and independence. This period is characterized by a shift from parental control to self-regulation and decision-making. Adolescents who are granted appropriate levels of autonomy tend to exhibit higher self-esteem and better psychological adjustment. For example, teenagers who are allowed to manage their own schedules or participate in family decision-making often develop stronger problem-solving skills and a greater sense of responsibility. Studies have shown that supportive parental practices that respect an adolescent’s growing need for independence can mitigate the risks of behavioral problems and foster resilience.
