“The Government’s Responsibility in Addressing Housing Discrimination Against African Americans: A Critical Analysis of The Color of Law”
African Americans and Housing Discrimination
Having read The Color of Law, you are now becoming an expert on housing discrimination in the United States. You have been appointed to a commission on housing and must determine whether the federal government is responsible or obligated for finding a solution or remedy for the lasting effects of housing discrimination against African Americans. Rothstein makes a powerful case in arguing that it is our government’s responsibility, so if you want to take the easier route, one needs to just choose what you feel are his strongest reasons and paraphrase them in your own words. If you want to argue the government should not attempt to find a remedy or solution, you should look at some of the arguments and his answers in the frequently asked questions section. In particular, his discussion on immigrants and not being comparable (233). Regardless of your position, you should address issues like restrictive covenants, exclusionary zoning laws, blockbusting, redlining and some of the key Supreme Court decisions and the Civil War amendments. You must bring in at least three quotes from the book. Keep in mind that the focus of the essay is on why or why not offer a remedy. You can discuss specific solutions in the conclusion. You are certainly welcome to bring in some of the solutions that Rothstein proposes in the chapter “Considering Fixes” or you can come up with your own remedy. Should be MLA formatted and a minimum of a four full pages or twelve hundred words. -

A Reflective Essay. This 500+ word essay has two parts (each part should have multiple paragraphs):
Part 1 (Rhetorical Choices): Describe the rhetorical situation of your campaign. What are you hoping to achieve? What audience are you trying to reach? What genres did you select, and why? Which publications, venues, or locations do you envision your opinion piece and visual or audio advocacy document being published in (this should reflect your choice of audience)? What main persuasive strategies did you use, and why did you choose those strategies over others? What are you most proud of and what do you still wish you could improve on if you had more time to revise?
Part 2 (Progress towards Student Learning Outcomes): discusses, with specific examples from your writing and process, how this project has helped you progress towards the following Student Learning Outcomes: (4) Produce coherent, well-supported arguments in different modalities in response to an ongoing public conversation; and (5) Create purpose-driven texts in different modalities that respond to a variety of rhetorical situations and anticipate and adapt to the needs of different readers. Post #6: Helping Ourselves to a Better Self-Image
As We Look Forward to Essay Two, This Discussion Post Will Help Us Start Our Thinking
Background:
Chapter 6 (“Cheating Ourselves”) of The Honest Truth About Dishonesty gets at the heart of the problem of cheating sometimes just that little bit, as Ariely proves this is something we humans do. Chapter 6 makes the connection between cheating just a little bit and self-image, with the point being that self-image and self-identity are never truly authentic. In our effort to create a healthy and productive sense of self (through which we survive, gain confidence, and relate to others in the world), we “cheat just a little bit.” Such cheating, when it comes to identity, can be EITHER a help or a counter-force to creating what we really want, which is a “true” and authentic identity. In other words, we catch ourselves in a loop of “cheating just a little bit” that, in turn, shapes identity. Sometime the cheating we do in this sense (as in “helping ourselves to a higher MENSA score”) feeds back positively into our identity (“Hey, maybe I really am super-smart!”), or it can backfire (as when we realize that our fake sunglasses are turning us into selves we do not admire).
Chapter 6 demonstrates this push-and-pull factor of self-signaling behaviors with its starting episode of the little blue crab. Ariely explains the connection: the blue crab puffs itself up to appear bigger (and “believes” it IS in fact bigger). The chapter continues with a fascinating (and comical) story of Ariely actually convincing himself, for a time, that he cannot walk and that he needs a wheelchair, as a way to be more comfortable at the airport and on the plane—in spite of the fact that he knew starting out at the airport that he and his friend were only “acting out” a disability for their advantage. As well, he demonstrates the effect on the self when people receive honors for accomplishments that they did not fully earn. All these examples show individuals puffing themselves up in various ways. Not surprisingly, the results may increase confidence OR they may ultimately backfire.
Certainly, Instagram and Facebook are ways we “cheat a little bit” when we look to help ourselves to a better self-image.
I hope you find that these thoughts, and this last discussion board post of the semester, inspire writing and independent research as we move toward Essay Two.

Directions for Discussion Post #5:
As we prepare to think about our third and final essay, Independent Research, please do the following post:
Think of a type of posting that goes on in social media that seems to fall into the category of “posting for a better self-image.” To do this, think of a group of people who post on basically the same theme. For example, there are some people who typically post about their achievements in a certain sport or their remarkable physical activity; there are people who post about positive body image. Others post about their children, while others may post about yoga poses, their fashion nails, high-style lifestyle, or their super-juicing.
Again, this is a type of posting you regularly notice and have comments and observations about, whether positive or negative.
Write ONE paragraph:
1. Tell about and describe this type of posting and who is doing it. Perhaps we have never heard of it before, so let us see what you see. (You could start off, “The type of posting for better self-image that I want to comment on is ____”)
2. Characterize the posts (by repeating some of the phrases, words, messages, memes) from your perspective. How would someone new to social media recognize this type of post?? (Again, take a stance: it could be positive, negative, or “I just find this interesting!”)
3. Say—as if you were a psychologist or sociologist—whatyou think is the motivation or social “source” for this kind of posting? Get psychological! Get some back-up from PsychologyToday.com or Verywellmind.com if you have to.
4. Overall, decide: Would you want to explore this kind of posting in a bigger way? Explain.
5. Last but not least, please include an interesting link that will serve as an example of this kind of posting.
Please write a 250-word post to take care of all these questions (250 words in total, though you could write more). This will be sooo interesting for all of us! -

Exploring Themes and Critical Perspectives in Roald Dahl’s “Landlady” and “Way Up to Heaven”
Final Paper is a research paper of 7-8 pages—including Works Cited page— in which, using a non-formalist approach, you write on any one or two works of your choice we covered in class. This assignment requires that you think beyond formalist themes of plot, theme, point of view, setting, etc., and explore the work via a critical lens. For instance, should you wish to focus on the use of goth in Roald Dahl’s literature, specifically, the “Landlady,” then you will frame your paper around that relying on secondary sources from scholars (four sources minimum/six maximum). You might also wish to draw contrasting or comparative themes between the “Landlady” and “Way Up to Heaven,” which means you’ll have to think about the way in which these stories share a single artistic vision in light of its author and what he sets about to explore in his writing. Again, this will require that you undertake research. You can also look at a work of literature such as “Battle Royal” in the context of a larger discussion on race and the “price of the ticket” (James Baldwin) blacks and immigrant groups pay to progress in society. In summation, whichever direction or work you explore is entirely your choice; however, I greatly suggest you begin this process sooner than later. I think by the end of March you should decide on a working topic. Lastly, you might wish to write comparatively/thematically on two poems on Louise Gluck or any of the poets listed; however, you will have to be sure your paper is properly structured and use the appropriate source material; the same applies should you wish to focus on the films: Get Out or Fences— Use only these films!

Compose the story of your writing experiences and goals as a short essay. Do not simply answer the questions above or use bullet points; use the questions as a brainstorming and planning tool to help you as you compose your reflective essay. Make sure to organize your ideas logically and structure your essay in a way that will make sense for your readers.
Discuss the following:
Your attitudes about what you’ve learned about writing up to this point.
The evolution of your writing.
Your perceptions about yourself as a writer.
Support your claims with evidence that explains why you feel the way you do. Include the following:
Detailed explanations.
Parts of texts you have written.
Visuals that support the message of the written text.
You can also use design features to draw your readers’ attention to key parts of your reflection:
Add section headings to guide your readers to the different parts of your reflection.
Use indentations and white space to separate paragraphs/sections.
Use colored and formatted text to highlight important words and phrases.
Step 3: Include Visual Examples
Include 1-2 visual examples (or evidence) of your experience with writing. Spend time selecting important examples that will show your readers something meaningful and make sure to explain them in your reflection. This might include the following:
Screenshots of your previous writing, which can include previous school work/feedback, writing from your professional life, social media posts, emails/text messages, and more.
Hyperlinks to your writing if it exists elsewhere on the web, such as on a personal blog or website.
Photos you have taken that reflect your reading and writing life (books you have read, your workspace, things that inspire you).
Engaging images found online that represent the ideas or concepts you are writing about.
Even video or audio content (YouTube videos, TED Talks, links to songs, etc.).
Make sure to engage with the visual examples you include in your reflection. Where should they be included within your reflection? Will you use text wrap and/or captions to help your readers?
Step 4: Revise and Proofread
Revise and proofread your reflection for overall organization and flow within each paragraph
