  • “The Power of Rhetoric: Analyzing the Persuasive Techniques of Douglass and Truth in Their Fight for Human Rights”

    Writing Task:
Drawing from the rhetorical strategies and examples of argument and persuasion discussed in class, write a well-developed, thesis driven 5 page essay that responds to the following topic:
    Topic:
In “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,” Frederick Douglass draws upon principles stated in the Declaration of Independence to highlight the contradictions between the nation’s ideals and practice with regard to human rights. Similarly, Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman?” utilizes rhetoric to deliver a powerful message. She boldly vouches for women to have the same rights as men and asserts her claims that women, even African American women, were worthy of respect and rights in the United States of America. What rhetorical techniques do Douglass and Truth use to convince their audience to accept their claim? Explain how the rhetorical strategies of each author reinforce their argument. Which writer gets the message across more effectively, and why?
Tips: Before you begin to write, consider how both Truth and Douglass use rhetoric to get their message across to their audience. What arguments can you find in common between Truth and Douglass? What difference in evidence and rhetorical strategy do you detect? The quality of your essay depends on how well you develop and support your argument as well as how you defend your thesis with evidence from the readings.

  • “Crafting a Professional Cover Letter and Reflecting on the Preparation Process”

In your personal and professional life, you will communicate with others through writing. You may find that you need to adapt your language, tone, organization, and details of the writing based on the needs and expectations of your audience. One of those occasions is when you apply for a job. Cover letters and resumés are important forms of professional writing and communication. These documents are often a potential employee’s introduction to a prospective employer and can be key in career advancement.
For this assessment, you will write a cover letter to a potential employer regarding a desired job opportunity. You will also write a reflection about the process you used to gather information about your desired job and the company. This assessment allows you to demonstrate how effectively you can construct a piece of writing appropriate for a career- or discipline-specific situation.
    Preparation
Using the same employer that you used in your Wk 2 Writing Reaction and Review assignment, complete the following steps:
Access an open job opportunity at that employer.
Research key information about your chosen job opportunity and the employer (e.g., the employer’s mission statement, who the hiring manager is, and the employer’s past accomplishments). You may find this information by visiting the company’s website or searching social networking sites (e.g., LinkedIn) or job boards.
Consider these questions about the job you identified:
What duties might this position require?
What education or experience is expected of applicants?
What is the company’s reputation, goal, or mission? How would hiring you help the company achieve that goal or mission?
What salary might you expect? Is it comparable to the same position within other companies?
Is there a possibility to grow or advance within this organization?
Consider the following questions about your unique qualifications and work history:
What makes you an effective employee who others want to work with?
What current and past qualities, habits, and career skills make you a good candidate for this position?
How might your cover letter reflect any of the following traits: curiosity, openness, engagement, creativity, or metacognition (self-awareness)?
    Assessment Deliverable
Complete Part 1 and Part 2.
    Part 1: Cover Letter
Review Cover Letter Guide: Five Steps for Crafting Your Cover Letter for appropriate cover letter formatting guidelines.
Write a 1-page maximum cover letter for your identified job opportunity. Incorporate the suggestions, including audience, structure, format, and tone from the Cover Letter Guide you reviewed to prepare for this assessment.
    Part 2: Reflection
After your cover letter is complete, insert a page break at the end of your cover letter to create a new page for your reflection. To create a page break in Word, go to the Layout menu and click on Breaks.
Reflect on the activities you completed to prepare for drafting your cover letter and respond to the following questions in at least 1 sentence each:
What was your research process? What did you find and how did you find it?
How did your research influence what you wrote in your cover letter?
When you looked at websites, job postings, and other resources related to this career field, what did you notice about how people in this profession communicate? Were any words, ideas, or phrases prominent?
To whom did you address your letter? Why did you select this person?
What are some examples from your letter that demonstrate a respectful and professional tone?
Note: You might find it helpful to review feedback from your faculty member on previous assignments from this course before completing this summative assessment.
