  • Annotated Response to “The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health: A Controversial Debate” Annotation and Written Response to “The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health: A Controversial Debate” “Reflecting on Personal Growth: Making Connections”

Select an academic essay or article (peer reviewed from a reliable source) of your
choice. Ideally you should select a topic with some controversy (two or more clear
sides). You will be given the opportunity to go through the academic databases and
    print during class time.
You can also use Google scholar (although there may be some access issues – look for
pdf links on the right hand side). This will not be a quick selection process. Your
article must be substantial (three pages long or more – 12 point font in word) AND
lend itself to the areas of assessment noted below.
It is VERY important that you select an article on a topic that actually
interests you. If you would like guidance or ideas, please ask.
In response to the article you will be assessed on the following:
    1. Annotation
Print the article and show evidence of critical reading right on the text. Include
your thoughts, associations, questions, inferences, connections as well as
observations of diction, stylistic and argumentative devices present in the writing.
Use C.H.I.R.P.S and Logos, Pathos Ethos.
Annotation should clearly demonstrate depth of thought and interaction with the
ideas presented. You can use any format you like to annotate (hand written,
highlighted codes, digital notation) so long as it is clear and easy to follow.
    2. Written Response
Attached to your annotated article write a response identifying and explaining:
    a) the thesis of the article (in your own words)
    b) identify and explain three key convincing ideas and/or methods of
development (Logos, Pathos, Ethos) with quotations/examples from the text –
please connect these to the thesis
    c) the most effective use of a style or rhetorical device in the text (and why it
works) *please note that this can include analysis of diction (word choice) if
    there is no observed rhetoric
    d) criticism of at least one point in the article (this may require additional
    research)

  • The Persistence of Past Sins: A Comparison of Gothic Elements in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “A Rose for Emily”

2-4 full pages, MLA format, with a Works Cited page
What is the typical gothic subject matter? The dark. The horrible. The grotesque. The mysterious…
In a nutshell, the persistence, threat, and resurfacing of PAST sins—that is, how they are hidden (“buried”) and perpetuated in the present (which often fools itself into thinking the influence of those past sins is dead, gone, and can no longer touch them).
How does this tend to manifest itself? Perversion, insanity, murder, sadism (persecution, torture), grotesquerie.
Keep in mind that gothic works have proven to be strongly and arguably universally influential in literature and others arts; works that might be considered less obviously gothic or not gothic at all often still utilize the tropes (thematic and stylistic patterns) of the Gothic.
Compare/contrast the approach to the Gothic of TWO different works COVERED IN CLASS for THIS ASSIGNMENT PERIOD. Again, be sure to keep STYLE in mind, and use cited examples and quotes as support.
Below I have attached the links to the readings:

  • “Exploring the Unknown: A Journey of Inquiry and Discovery”

We’ve read essays featuring everything from small, personal journeys to profiles of groups in historic moments. Some of these essays feature subjects who were both familiar and strangers. For your final, essay, you’ll get to choose your own topic that draws you into an investigation. It may be a personal narrative like Sedaris or Seshadri, who have personal experiences that draw them toward larger questions. You may want to recount a new experience like Wallace or Matter, who write to make sense of the quirky, poignant, and occasionally hilarious things they encounter. Or, you may want to take this opportunity to investigate something outside of your own experience like Hersey and Orfi, who write essays that build connections to subjects who are strangers or misunderstood. Whatever you choose, your topic should prompt you to do a little research.
Write an 8-10 page (double-spaced; MLA, APA, or Chicago style) creative nonfiction essay in which you:
Pose a question about your subject. You may want to write about something personal, or you could choose an event, place, person, process, or group that interests you.
Present your findings about your question using an appropriate essay structure and genre
Demonstrate an awareness of audience through effective use of language and style
P.S. If you’re feeling stuck about how to incorporate research into your essay, have a look back at our discussion posts and lecture materials for some ideas.

  • Sources and Reflection for Protest Music Essay

The essay is due on the 30th, but there are two assigments that I need to submit on the 23rd in reference with the sources that are to be used on the essay. They are
    1. Please provide MLA citations for three sources you are planning on using for your Protest Music Essay. One should be a scholarly source! Remember, no songfacts, songmeaning, geniuslyrics, etc type stuff.
As a reminder, here is the MLA citation for a scholarly source. There’s a bit more info to find, and it can be hidden in different places, so do your best! There’s also a video walking you through it under Helpful Resources where the other MLA resources can be found. You can also check it out here.
Last name, First name. “Article Title.” Journal title, vol. #, no. #, date, pp. #-#.
Database, doi. Accessed day month year.
*Note: Google Scholar is not considered a database, so if you used Google Scholar, just leave the Database section blank.
    2. Once you’ve found your scholarly source, I’d like you to reflect on the process.
How did you find this source? What search method did you use? Did you have to modify your search terms or use the filter options? How do you know this source is scholarly? Look up the author (sometimes you can click their name and get a bio, sometimes you have to Google them). What makes them an expert in this field? Look up the journal. what can you tell me about that?
For the article itself, what do you think will be useful? Are there sections you don’t understand? Remember, these articles are written for other experts in the field, so don’t be surprised if there are sections or terms that you don’t quite understand yet. That’s to be expected! What do you understand from the article and how do you think you might use it?
This should be about 250 words.
