This paper will be a semiotic analysis of a short, single “Text” in order to explicate the symbolic systems used in it to construct a “message” and suggest a “meaning.” Choose a brief object, such as a magazine advertisement or a short television or web commercial (no more than 60 seconds long), a currently relevant meme, or even specific sequence from an online game. The point is not to articulate what it means; instead, you will reveal the way symbols are used to create the meaning. This means you will focus on what the text connotates (suggests) indirectly through the symbols it uses. Remember that the purpose of using the semiotic method is not to analyze the entire text.
