Introduction to Ethnic Studies
Closing Lecture Remarks
Each one of us did not choose our educational system, but we do have a choice in the purpose for our learning. While learning is never a neutral act, each one of us can direct learning toward being something liberating rather than oppressive.
The United States, California and the San Diego area have a great variety of peoples of different ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds. All of these groups make up the American mosaic. The Ethnic Studies Department examines the heritage, contributions and issues of these communities. It is the department’s belief that, through an examination of the heritage of others, one can appreciate one’s own heritage.
The fact we all have different interests and challenges shouldn’t be something to divide us and have us all work together with the purpose of defeating oppressive system. Ethnic Studies provides each one of us the opportunity to be represented, to be heard, to be seen, and perhaps understood by others; so that we can build a better future system for everyone.
Now is your opportunity to demonstrate your ability to utilize course concepts and incorporate case studies in producing knowledge through cultural criticism in writing.
Most unit lectures close with this same class discussion format. If you read and closely follow all the instructions for this class discussion, you should be able to do well here on out. I will be leaving you feedback and a grade for this assignment. It is important you review my feedback so you can address any issues in the next assignment.
I look forward to reading each of your posts and comments. Contact me ahead of time if you need an extension. I accept late posts but not late comments or self-reflections. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, doubts, or need additional assistance.

Overview and Criteria
Post by Friday, Reply by Sunday
The three (3) steps to complete this assignment are explained below in more detail, but here they are in a nutshell:
Answer at least 2 question(s) or prompts.
Incorporate at least 2 course concepts in your discussion.
Leave 2 substantive/expansive comments.
There are two (2) deadlines that add up to 35 total points possible from this assignment.
Possible 30 Points = Your Post (Due Friday)
Possible 10 Points = 2+ Comments (Due Saturday)
You’ll be graded on your ability to utilize course concepts to critically reflect on the unit’s lecture material. You must closely follow guidelines to earn maximum points.
⚠️ Post Submissions
I only grade the first post left by each student. If you submit a second post, it will not be graded. I only grade the first attempt. All other attempts after the first post will be ignored and ungraded. Recommendation: Work on your post outside of Canvas and don’t submit it until it meets your standards for submission.
30 Points: Post Guidelines
Your post should be no less than 300 words in length. Your post should contain:
5 pt: proper grammar. free of spelling errors, meets min. word count,
5 pt: use proper in-text citations, 6 pt: apply two (2) course concepts and highlight them,
6 pt: incorporate reading and/or lecture(s) material,
8 pt: directly address all aspects of the prompt(s).
10 Points: Peer Comments
Each comment you leave is worth up to 5 points (depending on quality of post). Being nice and respectful is important, but it doesn’t get you all the points. Your comments need to be substantive and expand on the conversation or original post in a meaningful way. Comments should contain at least one of the following:
Comments should provide new information about the original post (“substantive”).
Elaborate on a point made by the Poster or someone else on the thread (“expand”).
In other words, compliments and salutations do not count as satisfactory comments. Pro Tips
What mistake will cost you the most points?
Use of in-text citations for all prompts is required. Every student should develop the habit of attributing information to sources in college-level writing. You can use either APA or MLA style for in-text citations. An example of citing the book in your text is as follows: (Takaki 2008, p.33). An example of citing lectures in your text is as follows: (Fuentes, “Unit #: Name of Lecture.”). Both the green number and lecture title must be changed to the appropriate source for credit.
Don’t want to lose your work?
Copy and paste your posts on Canvas, but write them elsewhere (WordLinks to an external site., GoogleLinks to an external site., etc.). Canvas logs users out with inactivity. If this happens, you aren’t alerted and your work will be lost even if you try to “save” or hit “submit.”
Need assistance with Canvas?
Cuyamaca has the Online Student Help TeamLinks to an external site. who are ready to provide you with any Canvas support in real-time. If you need help using Canvas Discussions, please review the following guide: Canvas Student Guide – Discussions.
Continuing the Conversation
You have a voice; what’s your say?
Guidance: Answer two (2) or more of the below question(s) or prompts according Dr. Fuentes’ lecture materials AND Dr. Takaki’s A Different Mirror(2008). You can also incorporate your own personal experiences or recent events, but there has to be a clear connection to concepts and case studies.*
What is Ethnic Studies and why does it matter?
Analyze the role and impact behind “banking” and why it matters.
Discuss the Problem-Posing model in the context of education.
Describe what Dr. Takaki means by “A Different Mirror” (Ch. 1). Analyze the term “ethnicity” as described by Omi and Winant (Ch. 1).
Add your own link to an IG post, tweet, or Tik Tok and explain how it is an example of Ethnic Studies, “banking,” or problem-posing; OR Write your own question and incorporate course concepts to explain the importance behind your question (and the value of the potential answer).
*No external sources. Base your response on the lecture materials provided and, as an add-on, you can tie in your own personal experiences, stories, and examples.

“Finding the Divine in Thomas Gray’s “Elegy in a Country Churchyard”” In Thomas Gray’s “Elegy in a Country Churchyard,” the speaker reflects on the themes of goodness, truth, and beauty as they relate to
For your second essay in this class, you will spend some time reflecting on one of the literary works assigned in the class from a Christian perspective. You will need to choose a different work than you used for your analysis essay. Also, since the example attached is about The Dream of the Rood, you will not be allowed to write on this selection. So choose some other work from the course.
Steps in the Process
Choose a work assigned in this course that appeals to you from an emotional or aesthetic perspective and write a thesis that notes how the work reflects upon goodness, truth and beauty. Write in third person academic tone. I chose Thomas Gray, “Elegy in a Country Churchyard”
Read the work several times (maybe read parts of it aloud) making note of the features that seem particularly beautiful, inspiring, emotional, meaningful, or true. Consider the following questions:
How does the work help us better value goodness?
How does the work help us better understand Truth?
How does the work help us better recognize and appreciate beauty?
Focus your thoughts into an argument about how the work of literature helps us better understand aspects of the Christian faith in relation to the ideals of goodness, truth and beauty.
Review the attached checklist and the example so that you understand the requirements of this paper
Compose a thesis-driven, organized essay presenting your argument and using textual support for your points.
Notes
Although your essay will be thesis-driven, it is not a literary analysis. Do not simply pick a theme or a literary device and make an argument about that aspect of the work.
It will almost certainly be easier to do this assignment well if you choose a shorter piece of literature or a small section of a long work, rather than, for instance, the entirety of Julius Caesar.
You should not do any significant research on the literary work, since the assignment is on your own reflections about it. So that means NO commentaries, summaries or editor’s notes, even those provided in the course. Your essay should be your work alone. You should be using significant quotes from the work, and you may use the bible and/or a dictionary, but that is all. Nothing else.
Style and Length
Your essay should be written in correct MLA format, and it should be between 1000-1500 words long.

Title: “Exploring the Evolution of Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel: A Critical Analysis of Primary and Secondary Texts”
Primary Text(s):
Choose one or two variants of “Little Red Riding Hood” and/or “Hansel & Gretel” that we’ve read thus far. This/these are your primary text(s). Choose no more than two total primary texts.
Secondary Texts:
Use one (1) of the historical/contextualizing texts with which we began the course to place your primary texts into context. (For example, the Bettelheim, the Zipes, and so on,) You can use more than one of these historical sources, but that would be in addition to the amount of overall sources you need here.
Then find one (1) academic, peer-reviewed sources through the Rutgers library databasesLinks to an external site. (cf. Google ScholarLinks to an external site. as well) that are directly on your primary text(s). In other words, if you chose just the Brothers Grimm’s variant of “Little Red Riding Hood,” then you should find one academic article directly on the Grimm’s “LRRH.” This secondary source can be from the readings for the course, if applicable.
In total, then, you will have two (2) secondary texts.
Thesis:
Your paper must have a thesis. The thesis is up to you to come up with, so long as you’re arguing something that’s critical and analytical about your primary text(s), using your sources to help make your claim. Your paper will be you quoting and citing from all of your sources—both primary and secondary—and using the historical sources to ground your argument that way as well. In other words, this should not be a book report, but a critical and analytical discussion, using a secondary source to back up a thesis statement.
Length:
This should be 5-6 pages double-spaced, and use correct grammar, mechanics, quoting/citing, etc. Aim for a 25% originality score on Turnitin; this means that you’re quoting in approximately one-fourth of your essay, which will ground your work in the texts you’re analyzing and with which you’re engaging.
Citing/Style:
Be sure you’re citing properly in MLA style; see this page for how to cite fairy tales from your anthology as well as academic articles. All papers must have a Works Cited page or you will not receive credit—you need to document your sources for research essays. See the paper expectations page for more in-depth information about things to watch out for, for examples of MLA papers written by undergraduates, &c. Please also make use of the Purdue OWLLinks to an external site., which is, in effect, the entire MLA Handbook online, for free. Every style and citation question you can think of is on the OWL! -

Health Science Evaluation
Write your Health Science evaluation essay.
What is an evaluation?
Evaluation essays are, in essence, reviews. They pass judgment on whether something is good or bad, better or worse than something comparable, and how so.
For Health Science, write an essay that evaluates a health-related service, app, or place (for example, a healthy food delivery service, an app to track exercise, or your local gym).
Use 3-5 criteria to develop the evaluation.
Judge how the service, app, or place meets that criteria.
Offer evidence to support that judgment.
also Include a brief note for your instructor and fellow students that explains, in detail, at least three specific worries/concerns you have about your paper.

“Exploring Gender Roles and Power Dynamics in Sophocles’ Antigone Through a Feminist Lens”
For this essay you will be applying one of the literary theories to Sophocles’ Antigone. You’ll pick a literary theory from the list (either feminist, psychoanalytic, or Marxist) and then you will develop an argument that is related to the core ideas of this theory. For example, feminist theory would focus on how the characters behave and why they do what they do. This argument will then need to be sustained by examples from text and outside research.

“Exploring the Traits of Domestic and Adventure Fiction in Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars”
THE BOOK FOR THIS ESSAY IS NUMBER THE STARS BY LOIS LOWRY
Write a 750+-word essay on the Realistic Fiction book you selected that analyzes realistic fiction as domestic and adventure fiction. You must include direct quotations from your selected book as well as summaries and paraphrases to support your analysis. MLA in-text (brief) and Works Cited citations are required for quoted, summarized, and paraphrased material.
Your goal is to show how the book you selected demonstrates the characteristics of domestic and adventure fiction.
Read and take notes on the book you selected from the list.
Review the elements of domestic and adventure literature discussed in our textbook and course module.
Find specific examples of domestic and adventure fiction in the book you selected.
Based on your reading, select 4-5 traits of domestic and adventure children’s literature and write a paper that explains how the book you selected best represents one or both.
Outline your paper using the traits you selected and the examples you found.
Submit your paper in the appropriate assignment on Canvas.
The following questions are designed to help you organize your ideas as you prepare for this paper; however, you should not write answers to the questions; you should write an essay.
What are the traits of domestic fiction? What examples of domestic fiction can you find in the books? Choose specific examples. Explain them and relate them to the traits you selected.
What are the traits of adventure fiction? What examples of adventure fiction can you find in the books? Choose specific examples. Explain them and relate them to the traits you selected.
Do not summarize the stories.
For full credit, you will need to use examples (direct quotes, paraphrases, and summaries) taken from each book to support your points and identify various literary elements used (plot, character, conflict, etc.). Sources must be used to support your viewpoint. Make sure you use correct MLA in-text and Works Cited citations for all sources. Consider this rule of thumb: if you look it up, find it in our class material, on the web, in the TCC Library, on TV, in a journal, newspaper, or magazine, cite it.
Edit your paper to ensure that all in-text citations and Works Cited citations correspond. This typically means the first words in the Works Cited page are used in parenthesis and signal phrases in-text as the citation and the words the in-text citations must match the first words of the matching citation in the Works Cited list. Please check the MLA and ENG 111 Review Module for guidance on MLA documentation. -

What seems to motivate them?
What are the understood beliefs?
What are their shared values/ideologies?
How do they express themselves or identify themselves as part of this community?
potentially things to bring up
What I have lol
In recent years, the rise in school shootings has left an inedible mask on communities across the United States. These tragic events not only take away lives but also leave survivors with a never ending profound trauma. Understanding the experiences of these survivors and the communities they form is crucial to addressing the long-term impacts of such violence. not only for them but also for us to make a change.
David Hoggs is a survivor of one of many school shootings in 2018 at Major Stoneman High School in Florida. He has been a good advocate to ending gun violence. He ran a protest in Washington with thousands of people in attendance. Which helped pass federal legislation on gun violence in decades.
